If you are planning on staying in Hanoi this is the hotel to stay at, it has history and is graced with an excellent location in the French quarter but you do however, need to book the historic metropole wing as the opera wing lacks character and history.
The rooms in the historic wing retain their French colonial charm and are well appointed and clean, They feature the excellent 'Mybed' which is so comfortable and almost guarantees a good nights sleep.
The pool area is a little small, overlooked by the outdoor bamboo bar area and not as private as I would have liked for sunbathing. We had afternoon snacks and drinks at the bamboo bar on both days of our stay and both were very good .The Le club bar in the conservatory section offers excellent afternoon teas and a devine chocolate buffet ( a must for chocoholics!)
But the highlight of our stay at the hotel was the unmentioned new restaurant "Angelina ". It's a comtemporary funky style bar & Italian steakhouse , I recommend sitting at the restaurant upstairs to eat as it is more secluded and quieter. The food and service were both excellent , with steaks cooked to perfection. Afterwards, enjoy post dinner drinks with the martini crowd in the bar downstairs with a personal DJ performance in to the early hours.
At late notice we booked a half day tour through the hotel which I would definately recommend, our guide was very informative, spoke good English, had an excellent knowledge of the city and was extremely candid regarding the issues present in Vietnam.
Overall, a very enjoyable stay at an historical hotel at the best location in town, would highly recommend.
