I booked the Metropole as I had read that it was in the same category as Singapore Raffles and Mandarine Oriental Bangkok and we like to finish our holiday with the best. Unfortunately the best was the Intercontinental that we thoroughly enjoyed and checked out of to stay at the Metropole.
When we arrived the staff were friendly and efficient, we had booked a room in the older section for the history, however after coming from a hotel that was modern expansive, light and airy, I found the corridors and room very dark and oppressive, however with an attractive albiet small bathroom.
The next day we paid aud$80 extra and moved to a Grand Premium room with club benefits. The room was stunning possibly the nicest we have ever stayed in, however as we had already had a buffet breakfast included the club benefits left a lot to be desired, nowhere near as good as the Caravelle HCMC or Landmark Hotel Bangkok.
Breakfast had nice touches such as a basket of pastries delivered to the table together with a smoothie of the day, however it too was not in the same league as the Caravelle and Landmark.
When I made the booking I requested a mattress topper however was told that the bed had a 10cm feather topper on it, the bed was so hard I had to have another topper put on it. The room is supposed to have it's own butler however I could not find the butler, (the Mandarin Oriental has a butler station by the lift), and the phone did not have a number for the butler, eventually I tracked one down to have the extra topper put on the bed.
The service went down hill, no-one seemed interested in getting a taxi for us at any time, we had to go back inside and find someone and ask them to call a taxi, for some reason the service is good on the historical side and non existant on the new side.
The last evening we decided to eat in the french restaurant, bad decision, we had the worst food of our holiday. We sent the food back however the replacement was just as bad, if we were staying in a little 3* hotel I would have thought that it was our fault trying to order steak, however a 5* hotel that rates itself as on of the top 10 in asia should know how to cook a steak and that steak is to be initially cooked at high heat to seal it. The steak looked like it had been cooked in a microwave as it had not been browned. Apparently the chef came out to talk to us, however we had left in disgust. We had anticipated fine food with good champagne and a night to remember however we only drank water and did not even bother to order sweets.
We found the Metropole to promise a lot and deliver little which is a shame when parts of the building are beautiful and the hermes toiletries are an extravagant and welcomed touch.

It was a great pleasure welcoming you at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. I thank you for your kind and thoughtful feedback. Your recommendation on having the butler button is much appreciated and we will definitely consider.
I am sorry for the inconvenience caused by the dinner in Beaulieu restaurant. I shall re-iterate this with my team and I apologize that this experience put a shadow over what seemed to have been otherwise a good stay.
Thank you once again for your feedback and best regards.
