“Excellent location, amazing staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2014

My friend and I stayed in the Calypso Grand the weekend after Easter at the end of two weeks of travelling around Vietnam and it was a super place to end our trip. Duc met us in the reception/lobby and gave us some handy tips about Hanoi and places to visit. Our room was then upgraded, which was super lovely. We were really looked after by the staff and the breakfast was a treat. The room was kept super clean and water was replaced. Highly reccommended!!

This hotel is awesome, when we arrive at the hotel, they came out to welcome us. A welcome drink for each person is given while we are waiting for check-in.

The staff is nice, they have no problem speaking in English. Service is wonderful, room is new, clean and big. There is a Computer with internet access provided in the room!. Breakfast is delicious, they even helped us to pack the breakfast on the last day because we need to off to airport on 6:30AM.

Hotel location is convenient, because the hotel is in Old Quarter, the restaurants are just walking distance.

Will stay again in this hotel when we visit Hanoi again.

Room Tip: Every room is nice, no worry of choosing it.

Calypso Grand is by far the best hotel we stayed in Hanoi. We were greeted with an unexpected birthday cake for my baby who just turned one (i just mentioned to their airport pick up driver that my baby just turned one, and then we got the surprise when we arrived at the hotel!). When we got to our room (which they upgraded for us), my baby's cot was decorated with balloons, which really made her smile! So priceless! The staff also helped us with everything we needed (money exchange, tickets, reservations, taxis, etc), and we really felt their genuine warmth and hospitality. We changed hotels after our Halong Bay trip (to check out other hotels in the area), and we saw how really Calypso was better (far better!) in every way. Will definately stay here again!

What makes this hotel special is the people working there.

The Hotel was chosen because it is located right in the heart of the Old Quarter which we had read was the place to be if staying for only a couple of days.

The Hotel was very clean and neat which cannot be said for some of the other similar priced hotels in the old quarter.

Make sure you get a balcony room. They are much nicer rooms.

The hotel is great. The staff, Amy, Julie and everyone else really make it exceptional and a must stay.

Amy sat down with us and spoke with us about what we may like to do while in Vietnam. We mentioned what we would like to do and Amy made everything happen. She organised everything with to the minute precision from organising our time in Halong Bay (The Bhaya which was wonderful) to our train travel and home stay in Sapa and travel back to Hanoi.

They held our spare bags for us, organised a room at no charge to freshen up and sleep, cold drinks, lunch bags and so many other little things.

A wonderful, effortless experience.

Amy, Julie and all the staff at the Calypso are just the best. Thanks guys, you are wonderful.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Calypso Grand Hotel for 5 nights in June, and then went on a Halong Bay trip for two nights, booked through the hotel. The hotel (and its sister hotel, Calypso Suites)had been recommended to me by a colleague.

Before I recount the ways in which the hotel and staff were just perfect, I want to address two things which I would think of when reading these reviews.

1. I believe that the reviews are genuine. In my time in Vietnam I have become suspicious of artificially inflated tripadviser reviews. Do the smallest bit of research on the internet and you will find how tourist businesses - hotels, restaurant, attractions, services - can and do manipulate the review system. I'm not a prolific reviewer, but wanted to write a glowing review for this hotel and staff because the staff were THAT genuinely helpful.

2. There is a recent review here which talks about a luggage lock being tampered with / the bellboy having damaged luggage. We were staying in the hotel which this incident occurred. If Iread this review I would have doubts about the hotel security. There is no need for concern. Here is how we trusted the hotel:
(A) When we went to Halong Bay, we left our luggage there and one of our bags was unlocked (we couldn't figure out how our own luggage lock worked).
(B) We had my boyfriends passport and visa returned by an embassy to the hotel whilst we visited Halong Bay. We were comfortable with his passport being delivered to them.

I know that the management went out of their way to compensate the guests whose luggage lock had been damaged. I understand that the bellboy in question had personal responsibility for financial compensation. I understand that the personal compensation, beyond the hotel measures, extended to 1.4 months of the bellboys salary ........being paid off by the bellboy ....

The reasons why this was a great place to stay are:

I. The people. Amy and her team could not be more genuinely helpful. We have stayed in more luxurious hotels since our stay at Calypso but have not encountered the same level of helpfulness. We got a leaflet on arrival telling us how to go about crossing the road in scooter crazy Hanoi! The bellboys were young guys with a ready smile, springing up to open doors and carry things. The reception staff were very professional and friendly. I keep saying "helpful". They were like a personal guide in Hanoi - where can Iget this in Hanoi? How do Iget there? How much should a taxi cost to this place? What street food tour do you recommend(btw amazingtours street food tour was just that - amazing)? Whats the difference between all the Halong Bay cruises? They booked and paid in advance for our train tickets from Hanoi to Hue, as we were rushing out the door to Halong Bay. We got back from Halong Bay at 5pm and our train was at 8; when we returned they had our luggage out for us to check and repack in the breakfast room, a welcome drink, fresh towels and the offer of looking after our luggage while we went out for dinner before the journey. They booked and paid for the taxi to the train station and the bellboy accompanied us right on to the train to our berths - which I now appreciate even more having heard what a palava getting to your seats can be! They packed us food and water for the 12 hour journey - which turned out to be 17 hours - saying that the food on board would not be good - and they were right. I want to mention the lovely waitress who served us breakfast every morning - she is a darling. So all in all, lovely people who go over and above the call of duty.

II. The rooms: We stayed in a room at the back of the hotel. I was initially concerned that the windows were "internal" i.e. the winow looked into a lightwell which in turn had a window onto the street. However there was enough natural light for us and frankly it was so hot and humid outside that we would never have opened a window anyway - although to be clear you can open the windows. The room was large, had a seating area with fresh water and fruit, a computer, flat screen tv, dvd player, big wardrobe, big shower, massive comfy bed, good AC etc etc . We had a deluxe room on an offer of "stay 5 pay 4". It was unbelievably good value and our oasis from hectic hot days out in Hanoi.

I'll stop gushing now. Hope you enjoy your stay in Calypso Hanoi.

Ps re an earlier review about cockroaches and lack of loo roll, we found the place spotlessly clean .......

Room Tip: If you want lots of natural light, go for a room at the front. But if you like opening those windows...

Having just returned from a week in Hanoi (first night and last 2 nights in Calypso), our family of 2 adults and 2 boys (11 and 8yrs) cannot agree more with the wonderful accolades given by other reviewers.

We booked our stay with Calypso directly who also helped arrange wonderful tours to Halong Bay & Sapa Valley - coordinating all transfers and room arrangements in between. The quality of both trips were very good and Calypso helped us coordinate all trips with greatest considerations to our needs - including packing snacks for us in preparation for the overnight train ride, sending us to the train and picking us up at 5am when we return and storing our big luggage. We were especially touched when the staff sprang a surprise birthday cake (+song & candles) on us just before we left for Sapa.

As for our stay at Calyso, the family room was big, comfortable and clean. Blankets were a bit thin, basically bed sheets folded over, but we found extra bedding material in the closet which we used. Breakfasts were delicious, consisting a small laid out spread plus an ala carte menu from which we could order pho, fried noodles (our favourite) and western style breakfasts. Location of hotel was good, on a quieter street in the old quarter. We used the very well planned hotel map issued to find our way around and even tried some recommended restaurants.

My family and I truly enjoyed our stay at Calypso Grand and cannot say "Thank You" enough to the staff for making this stay the best we've ever experienced!

We stayed at the Calypso Grand Hotel for 3 nights (5-9 June) at the end of our Vietnam and Cambodia tour and were looking forward to our stay there based on the great reviews we'd read. We weren't disappointed.

It's a lovely boutique hotel with a great location in the old town and the staff & service are second to none - nothing was too much trouble.

Not having been to Hanoi (old town) before, we hadn't realised that our room would have no window (other than to the light well) and being claustrophobic this was an issue for me. However, on explaining the problem the wonderful staff arranged for us to change room straight away with no fuss and even apologised, even though this wasn't their fault.

Our room was very comfortable & quiet with everything we needed and had the best internet access of our trip. The desktop computer in the room was a great facility.

The hot breakfast was freshly cooked every morning for us - much nicer than a buffet, and there was plenty of choice and as much as we wanted.

Our luggage was looked after for us whilst we were on the overnight Halong Bay cruise and when we arrived back from a long, hot, uncomfortable 4 hour road trip we were met by Amy and Lucy and brought cold drinks straight away.

Our stay in Hanoi was all the better for staying at the Calypso Grand Hotel - thanks for all your care.
