“Loved this hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

From the moment we arrived till the moment we checked out could not have asked for better service. The hotel is in a great location and we found the breakfast to be very good each day. You have the whole old quarter at your door step. Beds where very comfy and the glass bathroom with the large bath tub was also beautiful. Would stay here again for sure.

We stayed at Golden Silk for two nights. When our Halong Bay cruise was cancelled due to bad weather, we tried to book another night, but it was fully booked - a testament to how popular it is!

Pros:

- the property is well-located - within a five minute walk of Hoan Kiem Lake, the Thong Lang water puppet theatre and Ngoc Son Temple (among others). Also very close to lots of souvenir shops and stalls, as well as boutiquey shopping and a couple of supermarkets.

- it was so well-priced - we got so much more than we paid for.

- the staff are exceptional, especially in the restaurant.

- we arrived very early on check-in day and the spa shower was made available to us so we could freshen up.

- the breakfast was limited in selection, but very well-prepared and plentiful.

- the corner rooms are quite big, but the ones further down the passage are also comfortable enough. Everything is in terrific shape beautifully decorated - just walking into the room gives a sense of the luxury of the hotel.

- the Oriental Restaurant has an extensive menu and everything we ordered was delicious. A little on the pricey side, but we decided to splurge on our last night. Still, it's only expensive for Vietnam - a meal for four adults (shrimp, steak, grilled duck breast and pho) with cocktails and wine was only $75 (USD).

- the spa was well-priced and lovely.

Cons:

- none.

We booked into this hotel for our first two nights in Hanoi. We asked them for a pick up at the airport and he was late. When we got to the hotel, our room was not ready. We were asked to wait in the bar and they would let us know when the room was ready, but they forgot! Needless to say, our first impressions were not that good. Our room was a bit on the small side but clean and comfortable. The bathroom was In the Asian style of a glass panel between the room and the bathroom and there was a blind that could be pulled down. However, as the blind went over the door it had to be pulled up and down every time you wanted to go to the loo - a bit of a pain. And as other reviewers have said, the shower flooded the bathroom as the lip on the edge of the bath didn't go right to the end.
Breakfast was okay with a limited choice. However, the service in the restaurant was excellent. The staff throughout the hotel were generally very helpful and friendly.
The free minibar which was restocked daily was excellent and the location of the hotel is great.
We had a massage in the spa and they were excellent (the best we had in each of the hotels on our tour)
We returned to this hotel for a further night after an overnight cruise on Halong Bay. They had quite happily looked after our luggage while we went. But again we had to wait for our room as it wasn't ready, even though we were later than the 2pm check in time.
We had a much nicer room the second time which did not have the bathroom problems of the first room.
Overall, quite a nice hotel but they need to sort the check-ins out.

Was pleasantly surprised to find this lovely hotel in the midst of the chaos which is Hanoi! Staff came running across the road as soon as our cab pulled up to carry our cases (and help us tourists cross the crazy road!).

Room was reasonable size, twin beds larger than a UK single, TV, fridge and safe. They even have FREE beer and soft drinks in the fridge! Beds were quite hard but that's pretty standard in Asia.

The bathroom was good however, the "wall" between the bedroom and the bathroom is glass - so if you are friends and not a couple this can be a pain as there is no privacy. There is a blind, but you have to lean across the bath to reach the cord - not very practical when you need the loo in the middle of the night! The glass door doesn't close like a normal door (no latch / door handle etc) which means its not sound proof.

Breakfast was pretty good - mix of Asian and continental - not a massive selection but enough.

The hotel booked us a cab to the airport for a set price - cheaper than the meter.

If you are looking for a hotel that is central to all the main attraction in Ha Noi then this hotel is the one.
It is even 2 minutes away from the weekend markets. That is an experience in it self.
The rooms are very comfortable.
The staff are very friendly and helpful

We booked a Studio suite for 2 nights and were then doing a 1 night Halong Bay cruise, but spending one more night here on our return. On arrival, the 2 hotel concierges came across the street to help us with our baggage and to stop traffic while we crossed over (most grateful for that service!). The room was lovely, had a King size bed which was very comfy and had a great view of the street below from our balcony. The room was spacious and very clean and everything worked well. There was a small amount of traffic noise but this usually died down by 9:30 - 10:00pm. Be prepared for the Community Radio which is broadcast daily for about 15 minutes via loudspeaker on the street below at 7:30am - an interesting wakeup call! The staff were always friendly and attentive. There was no problem with the hotel storing our bags for 1 night while we went to Halong Bay. The hotel is in the silk shopping street but is also within walking distance to many attractions and also the Old Quarter markets. The breakfast supplied was beautiful - they make the best banana crepes! There was a selection of Asian and Western and you could have omlettes made to order. We would recommend this hotel and its wonderful staff.

Wedged between shops on a busy street in the old quarter the hotel is very good value for money. The interior of the hotel is quite dark and only the rooms at the front have external windows. Try to get a balcony suite at the front. The beds are very large and comfortable and the pillows better than most places the Designated Spouse Equivalent and I stayed in Vietnam.

Bizarrely there was a window with a shade looking out onto the atrium near the lifts from the toilet seat! be aware that even up seven stories, you will be woken by the propaganda announcements over the PA sytem on th street early each morning...keep a clean house, be respectful, ciommuniost government doing well, that sort of thing. Interesting.

Breakfast is nothing special though is satisfactory for the price. Of course the odd drainage in the showers continues to be commented upon and could be easily remedied.

Room Tip: Upper floors at the front.
