4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

We found this hotel good value, great location for Old Quarter Hanoi. The service from the staff is excellent, the breakfasts very good and this hotel has a gym which is quite good also. The only negative I would say is that our room was at times very noisy from the honking on the streets and the backpackers near by. Excellent central spot for looking at the markets and visiting the local attractions.

Room Tip: Would request non smoking if possible and maybe a room away from the street?

Cute Boutique Hotel in the center of the old quarter. Perfect to be the most characteristic of the city and move on foot or by rickshaw easily. The rooms are small but well appointed and certainly more Vietnamese style for other hotels of the same level. The staff is very friendly and always helpful. Really cute.

The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. I had no chance to thank the gentleman at the counter for giving me a connecting room on my second visit to the hotel even though it was a last minute request. I do not know his name but if you read this review, a big "Thank you" to you and your staff from the Chua family of 4 from Singapore who stayed on 10, 11 and 13 Jan 2014.

The structure has several advantages: an enviable position in the historic center, a great value for the price, clean and comfortable, the staff very friendly and helpful. I had to go back to Hanoi would not hesitate to choose it again.

I stayed here for 3-4 nights. The room is a decent size. Hardwood floors which was a nice touch, and comfortable bed. The shower was nice and had good water pressure. The hotel staff were professional and helpful. The breakfast had nice variety and was tasty. I would give this an excellent review if not for the outside noise. It is located in the energetic and exciting Old Town which doesn't really sleep, and so the outside noise if fairly constant. I always pack earplugs wherever I go so it wasn't a problem.

Room Tip: It may be possible to choose a room in the rear of the hotel that is not quite so noisy.

Medallion Hotel Hanoi

Hanoi is a bustling city, but it's kind of in two parts – the old and the new. It was to be the start of my quite daunting 14 day 'fact-finding tour' of this rapidly increasing tourist destination – Vietnam.

As in all this country's major towns and cities, there are hotels of all standards, ranging from the towering international edifices to the humble guest house.

For my purposes, it was better to base myself in the Old Quarter, where the streets are narrow and crammed with every facet of Vietnamese life. Walking this compact area is within most people's capability and for those perhaps less able, there are the popular Trishaws, whose pedallers will ease you, in relative comfort, around the maze of activity, completely oblivious to the incessant traffic.

However, I digress. This piece is supposed to be about the hotel I was booked into, having relied upon the Hanoi-based travel company, Asia Tour Advisor's, recommendation - so here goes!

The Medallion Hanoi is a boutique hotel located in the Hoan Kiem District (or more simply put - the old quarter), yet mere minutes away from the north bank of the Red River and its many attractions.

The word 'Boutique' can be construed in lots of ways but this hotel ticked enough boxes to qualify. Its rooms are certainly welcoming and properly equipped and all facilities worked - including the A/C - as expected (not everywhere in Vietnam I can assure you).
The staff are as keen to help as they are to learn from their guests.

The hotel doesn't boast a swimming pool but with so much to see and do once stepping outside its glass doors – it's not an issue.

Desktop computers are located in the lobby and are free to use (very welcome).

Because of the closeness of restaurants, cafes and roadside eateries to the hotel, I only ate breakfasts there during my 2 night stay. As usual, the 'Egg Station' was the centre of demand and worked smoothly enough to quell any anticipated impatience and the selection of other dishes were displayed with enough variety to satisfy all tastes.

If you have a penchant for loud disco music, then you'll be right at home from about 11pm onwards as, at the nearby backpackers watering hole, they gather to party...oh...I don't mean that you have to visit...just listen as you curl up in your hotel bed!!!

My marks then? For the price paid, its location and 'at home' friendliness – a 'good ole' 7 out of 10....and would I stay there again? Yes!

Room Tip: At the rear if you seek quietness
