In retrospect, I wish we read these reviews before having any dealings with Star Old Quarters, 29 Bat Dan Street. I can also confirm that the Manager "Huan" is a little hot headed man and a wicked liar.
We arranged a train trip from Hanoi to Lao Cai (Sapa) and a morning bus from Lao Cai to Kunming, China. We paid $20 USD each (actual price $11 USD if purchased at train station) for the train ticket and $35 USD each for a bus from Lao Cai to Kunming (we later found out the actual price was $16 USD each). We were told that it included transport to the train station and the train trip to Lao Cai. We were also promised lower and middle hard sleepers in a 6 berth. On the day of our border crossing into China, we would be met by someone with our name on a card at 9am (bus would depart 9.50am). I asked the manager to provide us with tickets asap - the manager told us to come back tomorrow to collect the tickets. The next day we returned to collect our tickets and we were told by the manager that it is "okay", indicating that I should not worry and go away. I again asked where the tickets are and he then became quite hostile. I then said I want my money back. He retorted with a quick snap "you'll f#@ken get no money back". Later, we again were promised that we will receive a bus and train ticket tomorrow.
It was not until the day of our departure that we only received our train ticket and a suspect looking bus ticket. We were given the cheaper beds (middle and upper), at that stage is was too late to make any issue of it. Further, we had to make our own way to the train station.
On the day of our border crossing into China, we arrived in Lao Cai prior to 9am as required. There was no person waving our name on a card, in fact, we found out that no buses leave from Lao Cai to Kunming. We were then hustled into a cafe and somehow the workers there said that we have no ticket and would arrange the purchase of ticket for us. We were told that we would have to cross the border ourselves and the only bus leaving for Kunming was at 6pm.
This experience left a really bad taste in our mouth when we left Vietnam. We just wanted to warn travelers to not book tickets through hotels.
