The good points of this hotel are the friendly staff, great location near the Catholic Church and comfortable rooms. The location is one of the best in Hanoi for great restaurants and surrounding shops. It is also within walking distance of the Old Quarter for even more shops and restaurants, and Hoan Kiem Lake. They also charged a fairly honest price to pick me up at the airport ($20), even though the going rate is $15. To be fair, I have been charged a lot more than this from other unscrupulous hotels, so this was ok. This hotel has loads of French colonial charm with dark wood floors. You can also choose to be served breakfast for an extra charge.
The negative points are the fact that it is located so close to the Church that you will be awoken by the bells that ring every 15 minutes. I also happened to have booked a room at the back of the hotel where there was construction noise that began at 7AM. This will be one of those things that will finish eventually, but the back rooms are not shielded from the church bells. If you are a light sleeper, I would avoid this hotel. Another point is that there is no lift, so you will need to be prepared to climb a few flights of stairs for the third and fourth floor rooms. Lastly, the bottled water you receive initially in your room is free, but the bottles in the frig are not. I was charged one dollar per bottle I used, which is three times what the shops charge. There was nothing to indicate the water was not free.
One other confusing thing is that this hotel advertises itself as an "eco-friendly" hotel, but the only evidence I could see is that they have instructions for re-using the bath towels. All in all, there are plenty of other hotels in Hanoi that are much quieter, and are a better value for the money. I paid $65 per night.
