“Cannot imagine staying longer than one night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for one night before a junk boat cruise around Halong Bay; in the short period we stayed, watching tour groups come and go, I can't imagine that the hotel is used for anything else! Whilst they do have a swimming pool and other leisure facilities within the complex, there is nowhere else to go if you have a lengthier stay.

Despite reading other reviews slating the food in the restaurant, we actually enjoyed the evening meal in the Panorama restaurant. It was slightly surreal in that nobody else was in there; but sitting outside overlooking Halong Bay (be it pitch black at night) remained a wonderful aspect to the hotel. Breakfast however was not very good, but the views of Halong Bay from the 14th floor are spectacular in the morning.

No complaints about the room, very comfortable and quiet, free wireless internet and a mattress which wasnt too hard.

The reason for 3/5 - like others have said, the Saigon Halong Hotel has no soul and its primary purpose is to provide accommodation prior to exploring the bay; therefore, it is full of groups passing through. Drinks were the most expensive we have experienced in Vietnam so far, e.g. 40,000 VND for a bottle of Tiger. They certainly have you between a rock and a hard place.

My first impression of the hotel is feel uncomfortable. The staff serve us welcome drink but showing long face without any smile. Did i do anything wrong??? The hotel overall is ok but a bit old. Pls bear in mind, if you would like have a seaview from your room, then the room number is odd. If even number, mean your room is facing roof. The breakfast provided still ok.

Hotel was dull, lifeless, expensive, horrible food in the restaurant and the worst service I have seen in many years of travels. A real shame given the building is beautiful and the views from the top floor restaurant are magnificent.

Our dinner at the Panorama restaurant was absolutely dreadful with completely incompetent staff failing to provide the very basics - we were waiting for champagne glasses for 30 mins, no-one served the water and our own party started serving it, to which the manager's response was: to give our guests all the water and let them continue serving!!

Food was terrible, nothing like the description, arriving at completely random times and 2 dishes had gone off seafood in them, which was shocking. One of our guests was midway through a meal, when the waiter grabbed the dish and said this is actually not his! Surreal service experience, where around 10 people stood around our table doing absolutely nothing. At the end this absolutely terrible experience, the manager had the audacity to challenge us when we said we wouldn't pay the full price.

It was a business trip and unfortunately Novotel was full at that time.

Based on my experience staying at Novotel in Nov'11, I would highly recommend Novotel instead that's just next to this hotel. Unless if it's full, not many option available.

As usual, hotel staff in Vietnam were always welcoming and friendly. The different was on the ability to communicate in English. SH staff need to improve their proficiency.

The bed was not comfortable and the part I dislike the most was the tag price on each item (even the toilet roll!) as reminder for the guest to pay if they take it - really awkward.

The good part was their roof top restaurant - great view of Ha Long bay while enjoying the meal.

Book at Novotel - similar price! We had dinner there one evening. Despite being western prices in the restaurant, the hotel looked very nice and modern. I was shocked to later find it was only a small amount extra per night!

Bad points:
The hotel asked for our passports for 7 nights which is a bit odd!
On paying for a meal in the hotel on my card they took the card down to the ground floor (from 14th floor restaurant) to take the payment. The waiter then came in and asked me for my pin number. I said I would go and enter it for them. He said "No, just write it down". In the end I decided to pay in cash!
There was a loud drilling noise every morning which woke us up.
There is an extremely loud noise caused by the bugs round by the pool. You have to be there to understand how loud this is.
On one day the maids came into our room and woke us up at 7am! We asked them to come back later. They came back at 7.30am. I have read in other reviews of this happening. This could be partly our fault as we didn't leave a sign on the door. In general the maids did a very good job.
The food was quite disappointing. One of the meals was probably one of the worst meals I have ever had. The restaurant were all empty every time we went in there which felt very odd.
The majority of staff could not speak very good English which made it very difficult to understand them. We were not greeted in a very friendly manner at all in comparison to other places we have stayed. In fact sometimes they were quite rude.
The pool was not particularly clean and there were only 6 sunbeds which made it quite difficult to get one. The sunbeds were also very uncomfortable. I cannot understand why they didn't have cushions.
The gym looked very dated and small. In fact the whole hotel looked very dated and in need of some uplifting.
We decided to book a trip round Ha Long Bay and thought it would be best to book it through the hotel. What a mistake this was. The guy was absolutely useless & kept trying to upgrade me (for an extra cost, of course) and change which day we were going on. The trip we were going on changed about 10 times.
When we left the hotel we were asked to write a review. No questions on the feedback they asked us to give, just a blank piece of paper. Once we finished it she stood over us reading it which made us feel quite uncomfortable and isn't very professional in my opinion.
Breakfast choice very limited. As mentioned in some other reviews also, it is catered for Asian people and the food is extremely bland.
Very disappointing for the price in Vietnam.

If you are going to HaLong bay then one night here isn't going to be the end of the world. However, for any longer stays I think the Novotel is definitely a better option.

The 14th floor Panorama Restaurant, with excellent views of Halong Bay, is the selling feature of this hotel. Otherwise the rooms were typical, but clean. Service was polite but not especially friendly. Pool was ok, but needs just a little more work skimming leaves from it. Also disappointing that the pool bar no longer operates, even though staff told us it is open.

Stayed here one night when doing Halong Bay cruise. Staff disinterested, just like robots. Checked in and key would not open the door. Had to wait 20 mins for the problem to be fixed, was told flat battery in lock. assured all good. Went out for dinner, back three hours later and problem with lock again, another 20 min wait. Room was average rather dated. But the sea view was sensational. Breakfast was bad. Limited choices, only set up for groups with tables of 12 so no where to sit as a couple. Food is set up for korean and japanese groups hardly any western offering. Give it a miss. The novotel next door would be better bet.
