“Nice large room overlooking the sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

This is one of the nicest rooms that I have stayed in due to the size and the view. Part of Gate 1 travel tour.

We had a nice stay here on our stop to Halong Bay. We were warned by our tour guide that the staff does not speak much English but the staff was really friendly and did their best. The breakfast was okay, but it's free and many options to find something fine to eat. We went into town for dinner, about 15 min walk, but heard the top floor restaurant was pricey. We got an ocean view room... Beautiful view of the bay!! We were given 2 double beds rather than one big bed, but we could live with it seeing as the room was very big and clean. I would recommend this place. Wifi free in rooms, signal goes in and out but overall did the job.

We stayed at the Saigon Halong Hotel with a tour group. It was comfortable enough and had a decent restaurant attached, but it was a little far from town, probably a 30 minute walk. Our room was quite warm and required a room card in the slot to activate the lights and air conditioning. Since we were only given one room card, I found I could keep the air on by putting my AARP card in the slot so the room would be cool when we returned. It was a good thing I did not use a credit card for this purpose because when I returned the card was missing and the room was again very warm. I had my guide contact housekeeping to find out what happened, and they adamantly denied any knowledge of how it disappered. All I know is that it was there when my wife and I left in the morning and was gone when we returned in the afternoon. Unless it grew legs and walked off by itself, someone from the hotel must have taken it, for what purpose I don't know. This experience made me quite uncomfortable, and although the hotel was otherwise nice I don't think I would stay there again.

Saigon Halong Hotel is a great hotel full stop. We picked this hotel for an overnight prior to taking a Junk Cruise of Halong Bay. We were not disappointed the view alone is what makes this hotel very special, so you will be well advised to take an Ocean View room. (well worth the few extra $)

The room is huge and has all of the amenities one might expect such as minibar, tele w/satellite, mini safe, room service, great wifi for internet and also robes/slippers. There is a huge balcony overlooking scenic Halong Bay which makes sunrise/sunset to be quite special.

Positives:

Spectacular View
Quiet location up on a hill
Central - short walk to restaurants and nightlife
Strong Wifi for internet
Great place for 1-2 nights
Staff is very pleasant and helpful when needed.
Viet girlfriend friendly

Negatives:

Room decor is a bit old and dare say needs to be revamped.
Bathroom needs a remodel.
Breakfast was average and one could see its catered for masses rather than taste.

I would definitely stay here again because the hotel over all is a very relaxing place to be and I doubt you can beat the view that comes with staying in an ocean view room for a reasonable price. I think this is the ideal hotel for transit night before/after a junk tour of Halong Bay!!!

Room Tip: Choose the Ocean View - you will be full of regrets if you do not chose a room overlooking Halong Ba...

Have to disagree with some of my fellow TA's. This hotel was great. Huge room, spotless with wonderful views over the bay. Welcoming staff and there is free wifi in the lobby. Food was great and restaurant staff were very friendly. I guess like with all travel experiences a smile solicits a smile. Would have liked to say longer as didn't get to use the pool, although it looked inviting.

We stayed two nights at this 5 star hotel. We had booked a superior room with mountain view but changed it immediately to sea view. We got a room on the 12th floor and the view is great over the whole of Halong Bay. The large room was mostly clean and fresh and had a TV. (we had a dirty bath curtain which we requested to be changed) No coputers or free internet here. Breakfast buffet seemed to be impressive but we did harly find anything suitable to eat. Coffe we were first served was weak American style but got much better when we ordered Vietnamese coffe. We booked this hotel mostly because of the nice pictures on the pool area. The pool is there with the poolside house, the three pool guys were helpful and arranged drinks for us. But the internet pictures were more impressive than the real thing. The personal of the hotel were helpful and could speak English. We felt like many others that the hotel's glory days are over and something must be done for it to keep the five stars. We felt that our Hanoi hotel with it's 3 stars was better than this one. If you want a beautiful view from the room this can be your choice at Halong Bay.

Room Tip: Book a sea view room - the view is definitely worth the money.

my friend and i chose this hotel from a short list of places (provided by the tour operator) as we decided at the last minute to stay overnight as opposed to returning to Hanoi after a Halong Bay tour. the place looked impressive enough at first.. but then it became apparent that it's glory days are behind it. the halls and room interiors are pretty dated.. the halls were not air conditioned and they pipe in terrible music in the halls as well... and the STAFF and SERVICE were indifferent at best. no one helped with the bags up to the room, the doorman was eating and appeared bothered to get the front hotel door. we asked for advice on places to go, where to eat and we got blank stares. the breakfast buffet left alot to be desired as well..unripe fruit, some of the hot food was cold and only thing orange about the juice was it's color. ps. the view from the room was nice.
