My wife and I were on a 3 week "self guided" tour of SE Asia in January 2014 beginning in Singapore, the on a 15 day Azamara cruise to Ko Samui, Thailand, Bangkok (with a side trip to Angkor Wat), Saigon, DaNang/Hoi An, HaLong Bay and Hong Kong. We arranged all of our private tours and overnights on our own with the guidance of Trip Advisor reviews and other on-line resources. This included our flights to and from Cambodia, private tour at Angkor Wat, Mekong Delta Tour and overnight on Pelican Cruses on HaLong Bay. Coordinating with the HaLong cruise was a challenge because we were docking at HaLong at Noon and the overnight ships all leave at 12:30 or 1 to accommodate their Hanoi visitors who must travel 3-4 hours to get to HaLong. Working through Pelican they set up a private tender boat which met us at their dock and caught us up with no problem. Funny, the other passengers, primarily a 24 person land tour group through Collette Vacations thought we were some kind of VIP's. We dispelled that quickly. The ship facilities were fantastic, food was excellent, staff as helpful as could be and a first class experience all the way. I can't imagine doing a 3 hour tour of HaLong which would miss the sun set and sunrise, small boat tour of a floating fishing village, tour of Surprise Cave, cooking class, social time with the other guests, etc, etc. Loved it immensely.
