“A great group getaway weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We spent the weekend at this resort with a large group of friends. We took over one entire 5-bedroom villa, plus had a few rooms in two other villas. Through the reservations office we organized a private BBQ for the group in our villa one night, which was outstanding. Salads and desserts were set up buffet style around the dining room, and a full BBQ with two chefs was set up on the terrace. On the other night we organized a group dinner in the restaurant and were again very pleased with the service and the food.

We are already trying to plan a time for the group to go back again!

Room Tip: Villa 5 is fantastic for a large group. There is a very spacious common area for people to gather...

This place is 1 of a kind in Vietnam. It is an exceptional value for what it is. Very Authentic turn of the century 1900 style resort. Food is excellent , you really don't want to leave the resort, it's how you dreamed Vietnam would be before you ever came here. It's a Dreamland.

Only 1 complaint; you need to switch the maintenance vehicles to quiet electric golf carts and trucks. Your old rattly golf carts ands truck are very annoying and disturb the peace.

Room Tip: Best of Vietnam

For a hotel with such good reviews and rating we were somewhat bemused with the pot holes in the "road" leading to the hotel. Our first impression of the room was not good, when confronted with such a strong musty smell when the door to the room was opened, our opinion continued to diminish as we were directed down a steep staircase with quite narrow steps and no hand rail. Whilst clean, the room had mould and salt damp, stained and broken tiles, patched holes in the curtains and holes in the mosquito net. The electric heater cord had exposed wires, when hot water was available (which was never in the morning), any metal components of the plumbing would have been hot enough to burn. The DVD didn't work and the shower room light globe had blown.
The key snapped in the lock the first time we tried to unlock the door. The receptionist replaced the key, but she was unable to lock the door and needed help from someone else. When room service arrived I was unable to open the door for them, so I exited by an outside door and met them at the inside entrance with the key. They were unable to unlock the door so they called maintenance, who of course were able to demonstrate the trick to locking and unlocking - one person to push the door another person to jiggle the key whilst pulling on the lock. Given the difficulty with securing the room, we had concerns about physical and asset safety. This was reinforced by the barbed wire on the perimeter fence, and the frequent patrolling by the security guards not only along the road but also into our yard.
The gardens around the pool and the restaurant were well maintained but the villas had not had any attention probably for many months and possibly years. The paved pathway was overgrown, the grass was very high in places and weeds were everywhere. This is hardly what you come to expect when travelling in Asia, as in our experience, garden maintenance and care are always of a high standard, this was certainly the case in all of the other resorts on this trip.
Apparently our villa was considered to be one of the best and we were assured that presidents and princes had stayed in our room, somehow I don't think this could have been recently!!
The staff were friendly, the food and service were fine, although the breakfast was a la carte and pretty limited. Somehow a Pillow Menu doesn't make up for what was a very disappointing room and facilities. Others have commented about its uniqueness, and appear to have taken a somewhat romantic view of its short comings. Whilst it clearly was "lovingly restored" it certainly has not been "lovingly maintained".

Room Tip: Avoid Villa 16

It is not often that you find a hotel in Vietnam with such relaxed friendliness. The Ana Mandara is an excellent resort occupying a hillside position approximately 1.5 km from the centre of Da Lat. The hotel has extensive and attractive grounds that are reasonably well maintained and have some fine views over the surrounding countryside. The hillside location does mean that there are some slopes to navigate although a buggy service is available if necessary.

Our room was on of three inside a stand-alone villa. It was a good size with a large four-poster bed and a well designed period bathroom with free-standing bath. The villa design is interesting in that there is communal space to relax in addition to the individual rooms which would be more likley to be used if you are sharing the villa with friends.

The resort also boasts restaurant, swimming pool, gynmasium and spa. We only took breakfast in the restaurant and found the food to be good both for selection and quality (apart from the coffee) and the service was friendly and efficient. The swimming pool was relatively small but looked to be clean and well maintained. The spa was well decorated, service was high quality and it was reasonably priced as far as hotels are concerned.

I would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Da Lat.

This resort might have been lovely at one time, but shows significant signs of aging. The rooms are spacious, towels and robes are fluffy and bedding is comfortable. The restaurant has a decent chef, but the pluses stop there. Wooden furniture and doors are stained and warped, windows have no screens to prevent mosquitoes and moths from entering, drains, tubs and showers don't quite function properly and the grounds look a bit neglected. Staff are eager to please, but it's just too worn and shabby to merit anything other than average.

Room Tip: Most villas have either a lot of stairs to access them - a problem for anyone with mobility issues...

Ana Mandara is a hidden paradise in a park, with over 15 villas spread on a forested hill. The French crowd in the 20's used to come there to escape Saigon. We had booked only 2 nights with my boyfriend but extended our stay as it was truly amazing. We simply didn't want to leave. The French villas from the 20's are really beautiful, they have been amazingly renovated. We loved our villa and our room, the ensuite had so much character. Breakfast was absolutely delicious, staff was lovely and the service amazing.

I recommend this place to anyone who wants to spend a unique and romantic time. April/May was perfect as the weather is always the same in Dalat but the resort is quite empty.

We stayed for 5 nights here and loved the experience. So many hotels are the same, you could be in any hotel anywhere in the world. This was absolutely unique, like staying in a french chateau with polished timber, original fittings, and I would really recommend it to anyone wanting something different. Don't stay here if you want gleaming modernity - while everything works ( or was fixed straight away if it didn't) there is a certain eccentricity about some of the fittings, as you would expect in something of this style and age. I was concerned about some of the reviews about sharing the common areas of the villas, but they are very large villas and there is plenty of space for everyone. We hardly saw the other guests staying in 'our' villa, althought there were at least 3 rooms occupied. We used taxis to get to and from central Dalat, about a 10 minute ride, but we also walked in 1 day, about 30 minutes. So it is a bit out of town but so worth it! We also did the resorts vintage car trip and picnic by the lake - another unique experience which was expensive at $60 pp but a fun trip - we did the royal wave as we drove through town in our open top vintage car. This place is bursting at the seams with eccentic character!
