“Cute little place, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

The Empress has a very European feel, particularly the beautiful courtyard overlooking the lake....such a nice place to have a beer in the afternoons. The rooms were spacious and clean, with the only complaint being that we must have arrived during mosquito season! The staff were friendly (though we didn't see them very often) and we almost felt like we were staying at a chalet or somebody's home rather than a hotel. The hotel is located pretty close to town and also to the botanic gardens (a must see). We were mobbed by teenaged kids outside the hotel because they assumed we were pop stars......Dalat is an awesome place! I would definitely recommend this hotel to other travellers.

I read a lot of reviews of the Empress, good and bad, before booking 3 nights. I liked the place, but its critics have a point. The Empress Hotel is neither a 4-star western motel nor a third-world dive. It is a very comfortable, low-to-mid-priced Vietnamese hotel. If you want a western hotel, there's a Best Western nearby. (Really.)

As other reviewers have noted, the Empress is in an ideal location. It sits on a bluff overlooking an urban lake. The lake has a nice 5 km brick-paved pathway running around it and is ideal for a walk or run. Wander out of the hotel to your left, and you're 5 minutes from the well-reviewed V Cafe and other bars and restaurants. Turn right and you're 5 minutes from the Dalat market and the beating heart of town life.

The property exterior is lovely, and I especially liked the courtyard overlooking the lake. The rooms are a little dated but comfortable. The bedding wasn't boutique-chic white, but it was functional. I found no evidence of either insects or insecticides. In fact, I have only two complaints about the rooms: mine was directly adjacent to the maids' pantry, which made it noisy in the a.m. Secondly, the wiring is old, and the only outlets that would take a standard American-style plug were the outlets powering the fridge and a shaver outlet in the bathroom.

The staff were friendly and spoke passable English. The breakfast, including scrambled eggs, was served cold but filled me up.

I'd give the property a 3 out of 5 - acceptable but not extraordinary - but it gets an extra point for the outstanding location. If I can offer some constructive feedback to the hotel's management, it would be:
- Invest in upgraded wiring and new bedding.
- Install burners under the buffet trays at breakfast to keep the food hot.
- Don't put guests in rooms near the maids' pantry unless the hotel is full.
Do those things, and you'll satisfy most of your critics.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second level, preferably as far away from the maid's pantry as you can get...

This hotel is situated up on a hill facing the lake and within walking distance to the markets and town centre. All rooms face the courtyard where you can sit and take in the view and enjoy the cool fresh weather. Just across the hotel by the lake sits the Blue Cafe (but decked out in purple!) which is a lovely place to have a relaxing cup of coffee....breakfast, lunch or dinner. We came here everyday as our breakfast at the hotel was not great - very simple and not a lot of choice, mainly cold Vietnamese food.
The rooms were surprisingly large, but very old, and in our case very dirty and damp - our bed linen were stained and feel we may have had a few bed bugs too....we were scratching all night!
Overall, an average hotel which needs updating and improvements on the general cleaniness of the rooms. Great location, helpful and friendly staff.
The hotel offers good tours and airport transfers. Correspondence via email was efficient and accommodating with many of our requests.

Tip: Remember to bring warm clothing to sleep. The weather at night can get very cold...especially for those whose bed is right by the windows.

Looking more like a small hotel in an Italian town, the Empress Hotel is a lovely choice for a stay in Da Lat.

The staff are lovely. It is within easy reach of the Crazy House, the market and the lake.

The only downside is the breakfast which isn't too great.

Make sure you visit the Linh Phuoc Pagoda - the most incredible architectural structure I have ever set eyes on!

This Hotel is in a wonderful location at the top of the lake and just around the corner from the markets, in this lovely quiet little city.
The staff speak ok English and were helpful.
Visit the Crazy House while here. We walked from this hotel.
The flowers and vegetable gardens are lovely.

What I most like about the Empress Dalat Hotel is that it is a good value for the money and close to Dalat market which has lots of things to eat, see, and buy. The size of the our room at the Empress is alot larger than rooms at other hotels, while the price of our room is lower. For the most part, the hotel is nice and quiet, while the staff is excellent. But Dalat has lots of mosquitoes, should have mosquito nets.

The whole property is tired and run down, with old fittings and not well maintained - especially my bed. It was very musty and not fresh at all, and not very clean. The biggest problem was the overpowering smell of poor drainage. It almost made me sick many times.
Then the wifi closed down completely, with no explanation or apology.
The only saving grace was a nice breakfast. We left as soon as we could!
