“relaxing place still off the main beaten tourist track”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

Koh Racha Yai is worth a visit. Great snorkelling and also some good restaurants. It is still a little off the main beaten tourist track and thus less tourist trappy ... as always, when going onto an island around Phuket be prepared for the food to be more expensive. It is just how it is, monopolising and also they do have to ship all the food across from the mainland.
Speaking of shipping - please be VERY CAREFUL when going to Racha Yai (or any other island for that matter) on SPEEDBOATS. The captains are rarely if ever safety trained and the boats are generally lacking any safety equipment. Last week I was with a group of 8 and we got stranded out on sea with 16 foot waves because they ran out of petrol. SO I would always recommend to ask to be shown the safety gear (first aid kit, sea sickness tablets, buoyancy aids/life jackets) BEFORE getting on a Speed Boat anywhere. As much as the journey turned into a nightmare, the actual island is great and worth a visit. If you can get over there on a bigger boat though ...

“Quite Nice Island For a One-Off Visit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2012

We hired a speedboat for some beach hopping while in Phuket in April and visited Racha Island for snorkelling and lunch. On it's own merits, Racha Island is really lovely but most people in our group have visited Fiji many times and we must be a bit spoilt, because Racha just didn't come up to scratch.

On approach to Patok Bay the island is absolutely beautiful, you swoop in to the turquoise bay with the white beach highlighted at the end, it looked very promising. We initially went in to the bay to collect snorkel gear, so we were excited about returning in a few hours for some rest and relaxation.

The snorkelling area we visited were pretty good, we got to see a range of fish in 2 locations. Try and take some bread with you to attract the fish, it worked a treat. But it seemed as though the coral was semi dead, as someone mentioned on TA, maybe from the tsunami.

We then went back to Patok Bay. My 73 year old mum wobbled her way along the mobile, plastic, foot searing jetty to the beach. So if you are not the most mobile, you'd need to think twice about this arrival.

We had lunch at the Raya Resort which was very average, but we had tables right by the water, so that made up for the ordinary food.

When we hit the beach for a swim.....that was the biggest let-down!! 2 feet in to the alluring water you hit major sharp rocks and coral and it required careful picking around to find any sand to step on. I chose to drop down and walk my hands out to deeper water but on 2 occasions gashed my legs on coral and I still have scars 4 weeks later. It was really disappointing if you love swimming in the ocean.

On a positive note, we visited Banana Beach on Coral Island on the same day and the swimming at that beach was fantastic.
