We finally settled on Mom Tri's Villa Royale and booked in October 2007, staying in April 2008. I did become concerned about reviews mentioning dated rooms, infestations of various animals, poor food, indifferent staff, dirty swimming pools and overly expensive...
I needn't have worried.
Without a single doubt, of all the places I have ever stayed in, Mom Tri's is the BEST. From the cold cloths and delicious (and welcome!) home made iced tea on arrival, to the seamless and efficient check out, every aspect of the stay at Mom Tri's was perfection.
To address some previously mentioned concerns.... As far as "expensive" goes - DO NOT book with a travel agent, you will pay far too much. We booked a package directly with Mom Tri's Villa Royale which had many inclusions for much less than the rack rate with an agent. We were kept in contact and everything was confirmed by Mom Tri's. I would sincerely recommend booking directly via Mom Tri's website. Animal infestations? We have the same geckos living in our house in Australia, so no big deal there... I saw maybe 10 in the three days we were there. Infested?! Hardly! Dirty pools? One pool had a few leaves in it from the tree that overhung it. If the tree had not been there, it would have not provided the much needed shade for that spot. Being an Aussie and practically living in pools during summer, if they'd been dirty, I would have noticed! Expensive food? Not at all. Yes, you could have eaten for cheaper outside the resort, but we weren't willing to risk any potential hygiene issues! Dinner was fantastic, such great value, a set dinner of four courses and all sorts of extras for about the same cost as a main meal at a reasonable restaurant in Sydney! Dated rooms and general surrounds?! I found only traditional Thai architecture, which is (ahem) why I went to Thailand, not to wake up in a hotel room that looks the same all over the world! The room (beach suite) was just lovely, large, clean, great airconditioning, so unique, with stunning views. Loved every bit of it - the rain shower too! Indifferent staff? The friendliest and most polite staff I have ever encountered. No, their English is not perfect, but then my Thai is far from acceptable. Yes, there are a few steps, but to me that was part of the charm, if the resort had have been on a flat plateau the views would not have been so spectacular from nearly every vantage point!
The beach at Kata was lovely, beautiful clear water and the shared on-beach facilities at the Katathani were appreciated. It was very quiet, the Thai staff selling drinks and nibbles on the beach were lovely, and the sunsets were spectacular.
Patong was horrible. Tacky, grotty and the touts were a serious pain. Thank goodness for the serenity of Mom Tri's....
I loved the personal touches that made it seem more than just a holiday stay. Cold cloths provided frequently, cold water given without asking, little treats brought round unexpectedly, the beautiful floral wristlet, the orchids in the room.... I found there to be plenty of food, and excellent quality at that. Who wants to go to breakfast and be confronted with an endless array of food, and pay for it on the scales later?! The lamb massaman curry I had at dinner was the best by miles I have ever had, and I've eaten in a lot of Thai restaurants here run by Thai people. The cocktails were cheaper than at our local football club.... Phuket Kiss... Yum!
If you want to stay at a safe, sterile, cookie cutter wake up and you could be anywhere in the world, enormous buffet, no character, impersonal, faceless, bland property with a gazillion facilities you'll probably never use, then Mom Tri's is NOT for you.
If you want to stay in peaceful, beautiful surrounds, lovely food, really genuine friendly staff, TRADITIONAL Thai rooms and architecture, stunning scenery (with a few steps), a little bit of local wildlife and a serene, elegant truly Thai experience, you will love Mom Tri's.
Mom Tri's Villa Royale should be very proud of themselves for a truly quality, personal product that shows up resorts many times larger.
