This hotel is nothing like the pictures on the website!
My husband and I went here on our honeymoon. My first impression of the hotel was that it needed a facelift. The suite looked like the picture online....but about 15 years older The staff did try to make you feel like you were staying at a what i'm sure this hotel once was back in the day. We had the flowers on the bed, rose petals in the bath and welcome basket, etc. I couldn't get over the fact that it was so dated and that I had splurged to stay at this hotel. The whole place is only about 15 suites. It is set on a very pretty cliff overlooking the beach. I will say that the view from breakfast is amazing and also from the pool. That's about the only good thing. The pools were filled with leaves and debri from the treas. The common areas needed more care and upkeep too. The breakfast was just ok. Compared to other places we stayed it was a huge letdown. The reason that we ended up checking out was that this whole hotel is INFESTED with geckos, bull frogs and who knows what else. I was horrified when we came home from a long day to find one in my actual room. The staff agreed to switch our room but just as I was walking to the new room an enormous lizard about two feet long walked across my foot and a bullfrog jumped out of nowhere! I don't do well with those types of things so I had to leave. The hotel was good about not charging us for the remaining nights and even gave us a ride to the Katathani down the street. So here is the honest breakdown:

Rooms are worn and need a makeover. You are not getting what you paid for and certainly not what you see online. For what they charge you can stay someplace MUCH nicer.

Staff is friendly and tries hard but they just don't cut it. They don't speak very good English so it was hard to talk to anyone at the front desk.

They did a good job at arranging our activities. I must say all of our tours were wonderful and all went as planned. I don't think they overcharge either. We seemed to have paid what all the other activity booths were charging.

The food at the hotel wasn't great. We only had the breakfast which was enough to fill you up until lunch but not great on taste. They have a place for dinner that specializes in fine wines. The prices were ridiculous compared to places in the town so we always passed. You have a great selection in town so go there instead for a 1/3 the price.

The location is great in the sense that you are just a few minutes down the road from all the action but away from the noise. I didn't like that you did not have direct access to the beach. You could scale down the side of the cliff on this small pathway and about 50 stairs or walk on the road. When you got there the beach was perfect though. The hotel is set inside a cliff so they really have wonderful views of the beach below. I will say that it is very lush and this is why you have the problem of all the lizards, geckos, etc. I just can't deal with any of that. If that doesn't bother you you would be ok. We went to the Katathani down the street and only saw one gecko the entire time we were there so it definitley has to be the setting of the hotel.

There are so many choices for hotels in Phuket I would say go someplace else. It is too expensive for what you are getting. We saw several other hotels while we were there and all beat out Mom Tris. There is a Mom Tris Boathouse that is in the town. I would go there. We went for lunch and it is a totally different concept.

Please contact me with any questions. I will try to post pictures but I can send you some if you need proof.

“An amazing place, very boutique.”

Mom Tri's Villa Royale

Mom Tri's Villa Royale is a wonderful place. We stayed in the Dung A Dao suite (room 4). What a spectacular room. Huge amounts of space, and a vaulted ceiling that houses an amazing life sized bronze Budda. The french windows that run along the whole length of the suite open out on to the most breath taking view of Kata Noi beach. The bed is at least 7ft wide. The spa bath was nice, but did take a very long time to fill. However the room was not a disappointment.

This hotel is a typical and great example of a true boutique hotel. The service is very personal. Most of the staff were helpful and professional, specifically Patcheree on reception and Sae and Num 2 of the waiters on breakfast duty. However some of the other staff are a little vague and don't seem to either have a great sense of urgency, or just posses a poor command of the english language. Overall though most of the staff are very nice.

The food at Mom Tri's kitchen, Boathouse and Gung restaurants is superb. Absolutely delicious, as is the sumptuous wine list.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone that isn't very mobile. There are stairs everywhere throughout the hotel. I also wouldn't recommend it for young children, only because from a safety perspective there aren't a lot of guard rails next to the stairs, or in fact any sort of safety features throughout the hotel to protect from falling.

I do recommend that if you want to book day trips or rent a car, do so outside of the hotel at one of the tour stands. We realized too late that they the hotel add a very % for organizing anything for you. In fact we paid 1800 THB per day for a Toyota Avenza when in fact it was a pretty pathetic little car with insufficient engine power to climb a basic hill. We then discovered that we could of rented it elsewhere for as little as 1300 THB per day. I did complain to the receptionists at the hotel and said I was really disappointed and felt ripped off. To their credit they listened and reduced the rate to 1600 THB per day, and only charged us for 3 days as opposed to 4. However I do not recommend that you hire this car.

Finally I have to mention one last disappointing aspect at Mom Tri's. Every evening the tables are set out beautifully taking in the amazing views in readiness for that evenings diners. The tables and food, as I have already said are exceptional, however the singer who is there every evening is awful. The pianist that accompanies her is great, but the lady singer is nothing short of shocking. The sad thing is that my husband and I, and I would bet many other guests would have eaten at the hotel more - or even returned from dinner outside the hotel earlier for a drink if she was a good singer. It isn't just that she can't hold a note, or that her pronounciation is poor but more over, the songs are dreadfully old and depressing. I believe if they employed a western style jazz/blues style singer ( similar in style to Michael Buble or Henry Connick Jnr) the place would be packed constantly. We certainly would have spent more time there.

In summary the place is wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks stay. I would highly recommend it to couples. I would go back in a heartbeat.

I had planned a weekend away with my partner to Vietnam, but stuffed the visas! Fortunately I decided Phuket and Mom Tri Villa Royale was a very suitable emergency alternative that day.

The reception hotel was simple – not unnecessarily over the top. Greeted by friendly staff with refreshing towels and ice cold drinks, I felt immediately relaxed. Easy paperwork sorted, we were taken to our room. I have to say ‘WOW’ was used a lot. The room was Dao-a-Dung and more expensive then the standards, but well worth it! Perfect for long weekend aways/romantic getaways…

The room was spotless and fresh with beautiful flowers, fruit, aromatherapy oils and an amazing view over Kata beach with crashing waves below on the rocks – picture perfect.

Linen was clean & white with large soft bathroom towels.

The pools were very clean, the salt pool looking out to the bay where several people enjoyed a late swim and drink to watch the sunset.

Kata beach is not remote, but not jam-packed with party people/sun-seekers! With due diligence other reviewers might have noted a 530-room beach front property.

Perhaps it was the time of the year? the only active period was 7.00AM when I met several other people on morning walks, a handful of surfers desperate for a perfect wave and hotel staff carrying sacks of ice for daytime trade. During the day ,lobster-red Euros (who should know better) baked next to their umbrellas with no kids present – this was altogether a more chilled out adult island beach.

VR hotel offers private access (a delicate little path from the beach to the secluded hotel) to landscaped sun terraces, which were perfect for snacks & drinks from discrete staff.

The restaurant was wonderful, delicious food (I’m very fussy) beautiful for sunset drinks and evening lit with cute lanterns… very impressed with the extensive wine list and fresh seafood – lobster was awesome! Breakfast was a feast! A choice of hot cooked bacon & eggs or fruits, toasts, cereal and fresh juices.

Although only a short trip, I’ll definitely be back again… Enjoy

Just spent 6 days at Mom Tri's villa royale and loved every second of it.
We chose a beach wing room and were very happy with our choice - although they are the cheapest rooms for me they have the best location (away from the main restaurant) and they are the ones with the best views - we stayed in room 14 - its the corner room on the top floor of the building at the front - we loved it as it gave us ocean front views plus views of the main pool. It was extremely quiet (which is always a plus for a light sleeper such as i am), the air con worked great and the room was extremely clean. The bathroom was lovely with a large tub and a great separate rain shower. The previous reviewer says that the rooms decor was out dated - not really - it was just more thai style with wooden paneling, silk art work and wood floors and dark wood furniture - nothing was broken or dirty. Perhaps they could have done with a new TV (it was just a little small) and an alarm clock - but thats not really major stuff to me!
We really enjoyed the food - we ate at Mom Tri's main restaurant twice and also tried their sister restaurants for dinner and for lunch ate at the pool snack bar every day bar 1 - i thought the quality was fantastic especially for the price you paid. Try the raspberry sorbet - delicious!!
A previous reviewer also mentions that they were unhappy with the amount of "free water" they were given - basically they give you 2 free bottles in the room everyday (biggish bottles), plus you can get as much free water as you want from the pool side snack bar,,,and if you still need more then you can buy it from your room mini bar for less than $3!! Hardly expensive or a problem.
We went down to the beach a couple of times - and i would agree that its quite busy (the katathani resort has 600 rooms!!) - but you can get free use of loungers if you desire - we used to wander down for a swim and then come straight back up to Mom Tri's. One thing we did notice is that on the beach you could hear construction going on (in the hill side behind kata noi beach),,once you went back to Mom Tri's you heard nothing.
As for the pools - we preferred the salt water pool - although there were very few kids overall at Mom Tri's (and those that were there kept being told to be quiet by the thai babysitter) they never seemed to make it at all to the saltwater pool - plus you could here the waves on the rocks below very clearly - it was heaven and a lovely place to watch the sunset from.
We paid for transfers to and from the airport through the hotel and they were very efficient, we also took advantage of the free trips into kata a couple of nights and then grabbed a tuk tuk to bring us back.
Mom Tri's is also near the kok chang safari (its in the hills above kata noi beach) - we spent a great morning there on a elephant ride admiring the view.
All in all we loved our stay at Mom Tri's and were very sad to leave - i hope one day to return.

“Disappointed”

Mom Tri's Villa Royale

Dec 11, 2007
9/17 found this review helpful

I would not normally go to the trouble of writing a review on this type of website but wanted to let others know of our experience.

Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor we decided to book 6 nights at mom Tri's as part of our honeymoon. Many reviews had painted the hotel as a beautiful secluded little hideaway, with access to a quiet beach, and perfect for a honeymoon.

We were so disappointed on our arrival. As a previous reviewer commented, the place is stick in a bit of a timewarp. The facilities and decor were more than a little tired and not well maintained. The swimming pools looked dirty and there was a general feel that the hotel was past its prime.

There was nothing wrong with the room but again the look and furnishings were a little dated. The "secluded" beach of Kata Noi is not secluded or quiet. It is a large beach with hundreds of loungers and overlooked by a number of hotels.

There is nothing in particular that is wrong with Mom Tri's but I would not describe it as anything special - which we wanted to celebrate our perfect holiday. We only stayed one night and then checked into the Aleenta up in Phang Nga. That was a totally different story - amazing hotel which could not be faulted (and ended up costing us the same as had we stayed at Mom Tri's).
