Kata Palm Resort

Stayed for 3nts first week of May.

Con's: (will list these first as they far outweigh the pro's).

Bed was rock hard (similar to a floor) and hurt my back, shoulders, hips and knees. Have never felt anything like it. Bed was terribly squeeky too, the noise would wake me up when I rolled over.

Room was dark, plants overgrown and dark tint on glass doors didnt allow much light in and the electric lighting was insufficent.

Interconnectiong room shared with a family we did not know with small kids and a baby. This door let all the noise from them in and we were woken in the middle of the night many times. Also made us more concious of the noise we made as we didnt want to wake their kids. When you book here make sure you dont get one of these rooms unless you need it.

Breakfast was terrible. I only dared to venture as far as the croissants (tasted/smelled off) and toast (stale).

House Keeping did not do a job up to basic standards. They yelled a lot, even though we were at the back of the resort it was very noisy still due to the housekeeping staff.

Housekeeping also dont seem to understand that the 'do not disturb' sign means just that and on numerous occasions knocked on our door when we were napping, their reason "just to see if we were in the room". This made me feel quite unsafe, almost like they would check our room (our stuff) out if we were not in there.

Pro's:
Kata is lovely and hotel is in good location.

Front reception girls were so lovely and the only staff there to really give you that nice warm thai welcome.

Pool was nice and clean.

~~~
Wouldnt stay here again. Found much better accommodation for half the price in Patong.
We stayed 7 nights in April and it was just great! very good value for the dollar. We've stayed on Karon before, so this was our first stay on Kata. We have no children, but the pool was broken up so nicely that they didn't bother us. The breakfast become a little "same same" after 7 days, but it's all good. basic eggs, fruit etc... the pool is wonderful, if you are a sun worshiper you have to put a little fore thought into what chairs to choose or you will end up in the shade. The internet is free AND/OR wireless, very nice. It was clean, the staff was pretty friendly and the rooms are really neat.
Second time staying in Kata - first time at kata Palm. The reviews on trip advisor are spot on. The location is great - 5 minutes from lovely Kata beach.
The rooms are a great size with day bed in them. The pool is not as "huge" as i expected from previous reviews but still lovely and longer than it is wider.
All rooms seem to have pool views which makes for a lovelt vista.
The hotel is walking distance to all things in kata - can recommend Kata Mama's at the southern emd of the beach for great thai food.
Breakfast is definately on the basic side - not a drama as we were there for 5 nights - i can imagine after 7 nights it would grow tiresome
Food and drinks in the hotel were very reasonably priced - especially the mini bar. I couldnt get the wifi to work with my laptop in the reception area but spoke to others who got it working. There are 2 computers in the lobby that are free for guests to use. Great hotel for the price and would recommend to all
“Great family holiday spot - excellent value for money”
We had researched the Kata Palm Resort thoroughly prior to making a booking so we arrived at the hotel with the knowledge that it was a 3+ star hotel and we tried to keep our expectations in check.
All in all the Kata Palm is an excellent hotel and we had a glorious 6 nights in a fantastic Premier suite in March 2008. I can highly recommend the Premier suite if you are traveling with little ones - our daughter is 2 yrs old and the suite allowed us to put her down for naps whilst still being able to enjoy a completely separate living room. Premier suite also comes with two bathrooms, basic kitchenette (incl microwave) and two pool front balconies both with direct pool access! DIVINE!! It made traveling with a 2 yr old completely manageable. She of course also absolutely enjoyed the amazing pool facilities - 4 pools in total.
There are some downsides that you need to be aware of with the Kata Palm. The breakfast like most of the reviewers say, is pretty woeful. In fact I rate the food at the hotel as pretty average all in all. Also the whole hotel needs a bit of TLC and some maintenance. In our room which is supposed to be one of their best the dining table was broken and was unusable until my husband propped it up with some cardboard, and it was also really scratched. Staff are very friendly and helpful although I witnessed some other travelers having some trouble with reception staff who had very little English skills. Also the kids club is not all that great, no one was in attendance the two times we popped in. They do however have a great sand pit for little ones but you just need to avoid the cat poo!!
All in all the Kata palm represents amazing value for money. The room we stayed in and the pool facilities were fantastic. The location is great for families too. Kata has lots of restaurants and shopping without being too full-on and over the top like Patong. For a family this could be an ideal hotel but just keep your expectations in check.
We stayed at the Kata palm hotel for 2 weeks and arrived home on sat.
The staff there are so friendly and nothing seems to be too much trouble. We arrived at the hotel at 10am but couldn't check in til 2pm. This wasn't a problem because we got changed and spent a few hours by the pool.
The pools are fantastic and clean, the hotel provides towels for you to use by the pool and to take to the beach.
The room was lovely and clean. We had a superior pool view room and apart from a bit of wear and tear in the bathroom it couldn't be faulted and the maids came everyday.
The hotel has a gym which we didn't use as much as we should but its ok, 2 treadmills and bikes etc.
We didn't use the spa but i had two poolside massages which were only 350 bahts (about £6). There are loads of massage parlours around the resort and i had a manicure, pedicure and foot scrub which cost 400 bahts for all 3. That was at the oriental massage parlour out of the hotel and 1st street on the left.
The resort was nice, plenty of bars and restaurants. Kata is spread out over about 2 miles so plenty to do. We walked to karon beach which is the next beach along.
Try Dinopark which is a mini golf couse and restaurant with a flinstones/jurassic park theme.
Food is cheap, most place a main course costs about 70b (about £1) other places like mexican or italian can be same prices as england not expensive but about £5-6 main course.
Taxis/ tuk tuks are readily available but we got ours from the hotel which cost 300b to patong and takes about 1/2 hour, and a tuk tuk back was the same but make sure you haggle.
The taxi to the hotel was 450b from airport metered taxi altho the meter wasnt on but cost us 700b with hotel taxi when we left.
The beach at Kata is beautiful, white sands crystal clear water.
Patong is lively and seedy and was worth a visit but i'm glad we didnt stay there. If your looking for vibrant nightlife til early hours this is the place for you.
One of our friends was 50 whilst we were there and some nice people at the octopus bar in patong put on some food and a cake for her even though they'd only met her once before.
All in all i'd def recommend this hotel and resort.
