Last February, my husband and I stayed at the Chedi in Phuket for 10 days for our honeymoon. The weather was amazing, the island stunning and the local people very polite and friendly. It ended up being one of our most favourite places in the world. Surin an excellent location in Phuket (Hotel offers free bus every evening to Patong)
The Chedi is a very nice hotel which offers something a bit different compared to your usual 4 star hotel. All the rooms/thatched huts are spread out through a small jungle like resort, joined together by wooden walk ways. Some huts are on wooden stilts over 30 feet high. It is very beautiful in the day time and at night dramatic with all little lights lighting up the walk ways. The food at the hotel is of a very high standard which I could not fault, except for the unreasonably high prices for the beach BBQ which equated to a meal at a very top restaurant in London. When you can by a beautiful Thai curry only 5 minutes down the beach for £1.00 it really does not justify the huge price difference. The home made biscuits delivered to your room every night were a nice touch
The Chedi hotel has a beautiful private beach. If you need a quite retreat with the most perfect beach, this is your place. The hotel also offers free snorkels, flippers and paddle boats. The sea here is OK to swim but in the afternoon there is something in the water I was told it was algae, which does sting you like nettles. It didn’t hurt too much, if you go swimming in the morning its fine.
The negatives, although there are a few, we still enjoyed ourselves; we just would not recommend this place because of the negatives. The biggest being stairs, stairs and stairs…… we knew there were going to be stairs. We are both fit and exercise everyday. We thought we would be fine, but these stairs killed us. We stayed in one of the highest room in the resort, in over 30 degrees and with the humidity, the last things you want to do is climb 120 steps (we counted) to your room. We would end up arriving at the beach for the day then realise one of us had forgotten (book, sunglasses, money, sunscreen etc) it was just not practical.
Another negative is this place is in surrounded by a very beautiful jungle, realistically you are in insect heaven, the mosquitoes are the most annoying but the bats that follow the insects are equally as testing. The bats are pests because they seemed to dive bomb us and you can not get into your hut because they are all fighting in front of your door every night.
The huts are very quaint, all are air-conditioned. I would say the Chedi was a 4 star hotel about 10 years ago but all the huts are in need of a revamp, especially the bathrooms.
If you want to travel out of the hotel resort there is the very nice Surin beach with other 4/5 star hotel and cheaper beach huts and shacks, just outside. The Chedi has no lights on its only access out of the resort (big hill again). As soon as the sun goes down it is pitch black, I am wondering if they are trying to keep their customers in, or just waiting for somebody to get killed on that road (no pavement) before they realise this is huge health risk and need some investment in lights.
As you can tell I have really mixed feeling about this hotel, it is different from the normal white washed 4 star hotels you normally get, but I do not think it is a 4 star now as it has had very little investment in years. The competition has got much better. The location and the beach are the biggest assets this hotel has, but they really do need to address a lot of their issues. If you fancy staying here, without a doubt ensure you get a hut lower down by the beach, straight away you eradicate the issue of steps and insects. Anyway, hope that helps
