“Place is not up to par to other Interval International Resort standards”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2011

This is our 3rd time coming to Phuket and previously we stayed at the JW Mariott Phuket Beach Club from Interval International. The room that we stayed at the West Sands is NOT a resort. We really felt cheated. It is 2 bedroom connected with a living area (room 6613 - 6614). When we rolled in a resort, we wanted everything to be perfect. On the first day, the floor in our room is dirty, the wall has scratches, the light bulbs burned out and the DVD players did not work. Oh and get this, between room 6613 and 6614, there were 2 doors but only 1 side each has a door handle. The door between the 2 rooms must be closed in order to get to the refrigerator. The rooms offered from the Interval International sucks. There was power outage later on at night and the flashlight did not work. Our 3 year old thought the airplanes are kind of cool. The villa is okay, but is not offered as part of the Interval International. The infinity pool sucks, there is no slide. We have to still pay to get into the Splash Jungle Water park (1050 Baht instead of 1495 Baht). I would not recommend this place if you are exchanging points from Interval International. You will be very-very dissapointed.

Dear Mcjaya

Thank for posting your review on Tripadvisor following your recent Vacation Club stay at West Sands. I was sorry to learn of your disappointment with the Vacation Club 2 bedroom apartment and please accept my apologies for the shortcomings you have experienced. The issues you have listed have been addressed with Housekeeping and Engineering to be more vigilant and to ensure the unit is to the standard that can be expected. Thank you very much for having reported the issues on the day of your arrival and I understand they were duly rectified that day.

As for the interconnecting doors to the twin bedroom, this is an international design to ensure privacy and safety should the rooms be occupied by different parties and that is why both units also have a separate entrance. I regret that our Beach Infinity Pool was not to your liking. The pool has proven to be extremely popular with our guests due to its size and the views it commands over the Andaman sea. The Splash Jungle Water Park is adjacent to the resort with a separate entrance for resort guests, offering unlimited fun for guests of all ages with its 12 Waterslides of varying heights and excitement.

Dear Mcjaya, once again thank you for your valuable feedback and we hope you will choose the West Sands Vacation Club for your future visits to Phuket.

Kindest Regards

So if you have been reading the reviews on this resort your probably thinking that your room is 10 mtrs from the runway....There are planes taking off & landing every 10mins........You are 1000klms from everything.......Have I missed anything???
Lets start with the airport....Yes planes do take off and land...that's what happens at an airport! but no-they do not encroach on your peace & quiet...They sometimes have maybe 4 planes at the most either take off or land but then nothing for ages,I happen to like watching planes (I know it's not for everyone) but don't let these whingers mislead you. The resort is first class 5+stars yes the restaurant is pricey but what hotel restaurant isn't?? But the food is to die for. The gym is fantastic with all state of the art equipment. You are quite away from Patong yes,but to be quite honest we went there and got some great clothes bargains had some lunch and a drink and came back.To be honest I wasn't impressed with bangla Street and all of it's sleaziness.Elderly grown men making fools of themselves renting young Thai girls for a week.....(not to metion the ladyboys)I just think it's sad & disgusting. So if that is all Patong Beach has to offer your probably happy staying at Patong I'm glad to be in the 'sticks'!
At the end of the day some people will complain about anything.

Dear And40au,

Thank you very much for posting your candid review on Tripadvisor following your stay at West Sands. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your experience and assessment of the resort and some of Phuket’s attractions! I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and of course it does help if one likes watching the odd plane taking off. As for the restaurant pricing, we have listened to many of our guests and will be opening another restaurant in the 3rd Quarter of 2011 that exclusively featuring the best of Thai cuisine and produce at very affordable prices.

And40au, once again thank you for your refreshing posting and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Finest regards,

We stayed at West Sands the first night of our vacation and came back for the last (went to Koh Lanta in-between). We had a really good time there. The service is excellent, the rooms are great (with really comfortable beds), the pool is huge and it is a nice place if you appreciate escaping the crowd.

Yes, you are close to the airport, and the planes are noisy, but the planes do not leave every minute and to be honest prefer this than an overly busy resort at Patong.

We also enjoyed the water park, which is good fun.
The restaurant is quite pricy, but the food is good.

Dear Mikkel,

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble in writing a review on Tripadvisor following your recent stay at West Sands, Phuket.
We are delighted that you have enjoyed your stay with us and it will be my pleasure to share your kind comments with all our Associates. As you stated, the Airport is in close proximity to the resort but Air traffic is not overwhelming and indeed for many of our guests, in particular the younger ones, it is a bit of a spectacle to be enjoyed.
It is great that you had good fun at our unique “Splash Jungle Waterpark” and please tell all your friends about it 
I appreciate your positive feedback on the restaurant food and as far as the pricing is concerned I will discuss this with our Chef and see if we can offer a wider range of dishes that meet various price levels.
Mikkel, once again many thanks for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you (and your friends) back to West Sands in the not too distant future.

Finest Regards,

Mam

OK, you can see and hear the airplanes but they are NOT landing and taking-off every minute. At certain times of the day nothing is happening at the airport for hours. Then you might get 1-4 planes landing or taking-off. You actually get used to it. We had the A/C on in the room and you couldn't hear them at night. As for the room, it is a standard timeshare apartment, 2 bedrooms w/ a living room with kitchen. They stock the refrig w/ 4 bottles of water every day. If you leave your towels on the floor (even the beach towels) they will replace them. They even washed the dishes. The small mini-mart had just enough supplies for a breakfast and snack. A washer/drying unit is in its own room on your floor. You can find cheaper supplies outside the resort. The Tesco is at the enterance of the airport on the east side of the road. We never went to the waterpark, to many other things to do. Never heard the music from inside the room. Now, I believe not that many people are staying at the resort because of the reviews of the airport so the main pool was completely empty the two days we spent there. The max of only 4 families were there at the same time. So, it seemed like we had a private infinity pool to ourselves. They supply towels at the pool. The restaurant is very nice and expensive. A very nice little restaurant called CoCo's just opened outside the resort (walking distance). It's half the price of the resort and very, very good. They perform a fire dance at 8pm every night. My kids loved it. The only downside is the location, it is 40 minutes to Patong and an hour away from Chalong Bay. If it's your first time to Phuket I would stay father south because of all of the activities but if you want a couple of days away from the hectic Patong area this is not a bad place to stay. Side note, my family loved being in the Kata area.

Dear Kneel 7474,

Thank you very much for posting your review on Tripadvisor following your recent stay with us. I appreciate your detailed review about the facilities and your stay at the resort and I am delighted that it has been an enjoyable one. From your comments I take it you found out about West Sands through Interval International, one of our highly valued business partners and I hope you will be able to recommend us to all your friends as a great Vacation Club Destination.
As per your feedback, Mai Khao Beach is some distance from the frantic pace and noise of Patong, but we have kilometers of serene Beach instead, the envy of Patong. Having said that, we appreciate that downtown Phuket etc. is a must see and we therefore are providing a twice daily complimentary Shuttle Bus Service to Patong for our guests to enjoy, therefore providing the best of both worlds.

I have taken note of your comment on our restaurant prices and we will be reviewing them as well as our variety on offer.

Once again thank you for giving us your feedback assisting us in our quest to continuously improve the facilities and service of the Resort.

West Sands Hotel, Phuket Feb 1-9, 2011

Hotel located about 10 min from the Phuket Airport. And this IS MAJOR problem. It is so close to the airport that runway is visible form the 6 and 7th floors of the building. Planes are landing day and night and one can hear this all the time. It is even worse when you are by the pool. You can actually watch planes land and take off. Sound and noise is constant. This is pure madness as there is no quite minute in what supposed to be serene environment. When B747 lands or take off you surely notice this.
And flies...little black flies... Flies all over the pool and they are around all the time. Same as planes.
But the pool is beautiful and large.
The beach is clean and almost “wild”. There is nothing for miles. This is good and bad in the same time. Sea is very deep as soon as you make about 3-4 meters from the beach. And there is no life guards on the beach.
The Hotel is actually a vacation club and you almost expected to go on the sell tour. They are trying to entice you with freebies in lieu of wasting 90 min to listen how good this vacation club is.
The Splash Mountain water park is part of the hotel but in order to get in you have to buy a ticket (1200 TB) every day.
The Patong beach is about an hour away and it will cost you about 900TB each way to and from the Hotel. Same about to Phuket town center.
The hotel has a shuttle bus (actually 10 seat van) to Patong beach but it leaves only at 11AM and 3PM and comes back at 7PM. This is very inconvenient as it is not late enough to even have a dinner. Also it is really strange to send 2 busses out and only one back! And make sure you will make a reservation for this bus ahead or you will not get a seat. Hotel staff does not tell you about this little thing. so when you show up at the bus stop you have no seat.
The hotel is new and actually still under construction. The major plus are rooms. They are big, nice and have a full kitchen. There is small shop to buy some food but is I really small and very very pricy.
The hotel has only one real restaurant which is really bad as hotel located so far from anything that you are almost tight to this restaurant for dinner.
Hotel staff is nice but clearly has no experience. There is feel that you are “been taken for a ride” at every turn.
The internet in the room is free but really not stable. Each room equipped with wireless router but it did not work in our room and we had to connect to every available free connection (on a advise of the hotel staff). You have to search for free and stable connection all the time.
Generally good value for hotel if you do not mind to be far far away from busy nightlife and close close to the airport.

Please do yourself a favour and do not go to West Sands unless you like the sound of low flying aircraft directly above your head. This is no lie, it is horrendous. This is the closest you will get to the airport without boarding the plane.
We arrived on Saturday 11th December for 1 week and we were shown to our 2 bedroom apartment that should sleep 4. Well it had 2 bedrooms but it had 1 tiny sofa and only 2 chairs on the balcony. You could not dry your hair in the mirror as the plug sockets were nowhere near a mirror at all. This is supposed to be 5 star!
The airport runway you can see from your apartment and the planes run from 5am in the morning until 12.30 at night. This is Phuket's only airport and there are a lot of flights in and out, at one time we counted 4 planes in 5 mins. When you go to the pool area the planes fly directly above your head and you can forget about having a nice romantic meal with all that noise going on. To make matters worse not only have you got the noise from the planes but also the water park which was directly beside our apartment which plays music from 10 in the morning. Then you also have construction work going on, so how much more noise can one take?
Whoever develpoed this should take thier own family on holiday to West Sands and see how long they last. We asked for an upgrade as the apartment was not suitable and we were told we could have a villa for an extra £600 the the next 6 days. We said yes as it was Sunday and we didn't know what else to do. We moved all our stuff and went to the pool and when we came back the receptionist came to see me and said that the rate was £600 an night extra not for the week! We couldn't believe it, for a start we hadn't got it wrong, we know what we were told and secondly who would pay £3600 for 6 days and nights of planes flying overhead. They would not less us stay even for 1 night as we had unpacked and only offered us our old apartment back which we refused. We made a phone call to the Marriott Renaissance next door which was peace and quiet with no planes flying overhead and we checked out. We had already paid for our weeks accommodation at West Sands in advance.
The only positive thing I can say about the hotel is the staff we had encountered in the restaurant and bar, they were lovely so no complaints there. The resort is on the beach but the plane noise really does ruin everything as it is all day!!!!
We normally stay in the Mai Khao beach area so we know it well but do yourself a favour and stay in one of the Marriott resorts up the road. Far superior but without the noise. I will try posting a few photos just so people can see how close it really is.

The website is totally misleading with pictures of the beautiful villas when all that is available for Getaways is the muddled, poorly designed 2 Bed appartments.
Quiet inside but extremely noisy from both the airport & the Waterpark outside.
Dreadful location with no easy access to shops or outside facilities.
We left a day early & should have done it sooner!!!
