“Very average hotel for above average prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

This is my first time to Pattaya and Iknew it was going to be lively thats why we booked here. The hotel is a welcome traquility away from the centre of Pattaya but onlyby 10 mins in a taxi. I am disappointed by the hotel though, it has a great location on the beach which maybe the prices are higher but the hotel and staff are really not up to scratch. Breakfastis very basic, and the staff not friendly at all, with a couple of exceptions. It doeshave a large pool and now in April is very quiet too, but looking around here there are far cheaper hotels with the same standard of facilities. It is however a great location especially if you want the gay beach, it hasnt spoilt our stay here but dont really see why is it moreexpensive than others around.

I stayed at this hotel about 5 years ago. Its not how I remember it!

The hotel is now attracting a lot of Russian guests. I am making an assumption but I suspect these guests are on fairly cheap packages and and the hotel has reduced its prices (for these package deal clients) in an effort to maintain occupancy rates. If you are paying standard rates (around $85 a night) then this hotel starts to look expensive in terms of whats generally available.

The problem that now clearly exists that the hotel is being run on a thin budget with services suffering as a consequence.

First the positives:

> large rooms
> good location
> clean rooms with housekeeping generally undertaken to a good standard.

The negatives:

> pool is not maintained properly. The water is cloudy suggesting a lack of filtering (pool pumps are expensive to run). There is excessive foliage and other debris floating on the water (see picture)

> decking around the pool is in a terrible condition. Not just talking about the decorative appearance but some of the decking is rotten.

> breakfast is a very modest affair. I asked for poached eggs which confused them totally and was served boiled eggs (which appeared in less than 3 minutes) these were almost raw (a hotel that can’t boil eggs, so I opted for the omelette). Fruit juices are gross and paper napkins! This might seem fussy but I am not going into detail here in terms of the other offerings! Staff in the dining room are not particularly friendly.

> towels in the room are old and fraying (no fluffy luxury on offer here). The shower in our room was above the bath and the pressure was dreadful. Even the loo paper was the cheapest stuff you can buy.

> paying for internet access is irritating given that the service standard throughout most of Asia is now free access.

Recommendations:

> Hotel management needs to take steps to arrest the sorry decline of this property.

> If you are planning to stay here I would suggest that you get confirmation in terms of the condition of the pool. Clean, clear water and the surface properly cleared of floating debris and scum must be an absolute minimum standard.

An ok hotel on a rather average beach (Pattaya as it is), rooms are ok, but need slight renovation and ours had that moldy smell in it. Pool could have been cleaner while the room and other areas are clean. Very nice, friendly and professional staff.
The hotel is mostly filled with Russian tourists, which adds to the atmosphere. We stayed there for 1 night and it was ok, however, I would not come back.

Stayed 2 night at this establishment. Found it on the web. Would'nt use it again. However the staff was friendly and helpful, the place was full of tourist from eastern Europe who dominated the scene completely. Guess the hotel cannot help that but it made it challenging for the few people from central, northern and western Europe, although the were very few. For instance, guests went out in the morning and occupied the chairs around the pool with pooltowels and then left. So when we wanted two chairs there were none, unless you viloently throw away some towels. This was something the Germans tended to do in the 90s but they are long gone. Now Russians instead have pick up this tradition. The hotel could have a policy about this and how to dress in the restarant as well but probably do not dare to challenge the guests who really needed to be challenged. Otherwise the hotel is ok, but old and a bit worn down. Breakfast not much to write home to mother about. It is not a inexspensive hotel compared to others. Clearly overpriced I think.

Room Tip: Try to get a room as close to the beach as possible. We had one given to us far away from the sea.

I had an opportunity to stay in this hotel at least once a year in the past 5 years. The setting and surround makes this hotel the perfect place to relax and unwind. The rooms are very nice, clean and tastefully designed. I preferred the rooms on second floor overlooking the nice and clean swimming pool. Breakfast is good and there is variety of options provided. Hotel is located on Jomtien beach where you can find a huge array of delicious restaurants and food stands. There is massage available on pool side or you can chose one of hundreds freelance masseurs on the beach. It does get busy in high season with lots of tourists mainly from Russia choosing this hotel as their destination. Mine preference are to meet and mingle with locals so I do spend most of the day on the Jomtien beach. Lots of shade, friendly people with excellent choice of food and drinks . Highly recommended to enjoy dinner in very special restaurant Cabbage and Condoms - just ask reception to arrange transport for you. I'm staying in this nice hotel again in March 2012 - cant wait!!!

The Avalon is a very good place to stay. The rooms are very big and clean and the balcony is comfortable. Do not take an outside room as these face the next property which is currently being built. Other wise all the internal facing rooms are excellent.

The pool is very good and there is plenty of shade.
There is a wide variety of foods available at breakfast particularly the fruits. Eggs done any style. If you are Australian you will be disappointed with the cereal options.
The beach is just across the road and good fun for a few hours each day. So relaxing doing nothing. There are also some good cheap restaurants nearby.
Going to Pattaya is about 5 minute ride and 20 Baht on one of the many open backed taxis.
Unfortunately they pack you in on the way back but this is unavoidable.

Internet is 100 Baht a day so thats ordinary and ofcourse you need to have your laptop with you. We used a local shop which was 30 Baht an hour.

Room Tip: Do not accept a room facing the adjoining property.
