Awesome place!
I chose Sandalwood because of the (virtually) 100% five star reviews. Everybody seemed to have a great time there and I to be honest I because there are so many sterling reviews I had no qualms at all about booking. We were not disappointed.!!
We stayed for two weeks (yes.....soooo lucky) for our annual "chill out" holiday which we always take in November. Having been to Thailand on 6 prior occasions I knew it is in the middle of the rainy season but we were actually very lucky...and didn't get much at all. If it rains in Thailand it usually stops after 30 minutes.
Anyway...on to Sandalwood. I must apologise for forgetting names...I really should have written them down... We were collected at the airport by one of the drivers...very friendly. 20 minutes later he was carrying our bags to the villa. We were met with a gorgeous smile and given a refreshing drink....and then taken to Lotus Villa. This sleeps 4, I was happy to pay extra as staying 2 weeks - we wanted the space.....and spacious it certainly was! Very clean, very comfortable and has EVERYTHING you could possibly need. The infinity pool, next door was a joy to float in. Not big enough to do any serious swimming but, hey, I was here to chill out, not to exercise. The views from the pool (and our villa) were spectacular.
All the staff were VERY friendly and helpful. Poon (the owner, i think) runs a good ship and the staff certainly go the extra mile to help....even anticipating what I might need for various excursions we had planned. It really was customer service at its best.
Sandalwood is on top of a very steep hill. I wouldn't like to have walked up (or down) it.....but of course the upside to that is that because it is so high.....the views are awesome. We were there 2 weeks and hired a car on the first day (most people use mopeds but as I have NO experience at all on them and Koh Samui has more pot-holes than anywhere I've been....a car was the only option for me). Poon very kindly gave me 50% discount on the car...probably because we were staying for two weeks....so don't expect that as the norm.
Breakfast was nice...and especially being able to have it served on our balcony every day...made us feel very special. Unfortunately we didn't try the restaurant at night (even though we had 2 free vouchers)....we just wanted to visit every nook and cranny around Samui.
We kind of knew what to expect on Samui, even though we hadn't been before. I thought it would be a good mix of good nightlife with quiter spots if we wanted...and thats how it is. It's currently (November 2009) suffering from the global recession...its just beginnig to hit Thailand. It's been built up in a ramshackle sort of way in recent years....and by all accounts it has lost some of its earlier charm BUT...we loved it. Two weeks and we never got bored...the car helped...and we were able to visit all the tucked away coves...the quiter beaches...the nightlife in Lamai and Chewang..and for quieter nights just a leisurely drive to a recommended restaurant. I really loved it...perhaps a bit more than Mandy (the Mrs) but she had a great time too. I'm sure we'll be going back some time in the next ten years to see how Samui has progressed.
It was an exceptional experience for us at Sandalwood and we both can heartily recommend it for either a short stay....or a much longer one.
So thanks must go to Poon, Au, M, Taexxx, the two girls in the spa (GREAT massages!) and EVERYONE else whose names I have forgotten at Sandalwood. We hope to see you again in a few years.
