This is the the first place my girlfriend and I stayed during our month long trip to Thailand, and we were very glad to have chosen this resort.
It all started when Angus, the Australian owner of the place, picked us up personally from the airport, even though our flight arrived at 7:00 a.m. The drive to the resort is at least 20 minutes, which meant that he was up at at least 6:15 or 6:30 to come to get us, but it was no problem. He drove us to the resort, introduced us to his wife Hon, who is lovely, and showed us our room; right near the pool as promised.
The room was neat and nice, with plenty of shelves and a nice large closet to hang things. The a/c cranked cool air as soon as we turned it on, the reception on the television was perfect, and there even was a DVD player and a mini refridgerator in the room. Angus also has a HUGE collection of DVD's, which he allows everyone to use free or charge. Nice! Also, free WI-FI was awesome, but even if you don't have a laptop, he allows free use of the computer in the eating area, which brings me to my next point, the food.
One of the reasons we chose Thailand to vacation at was to eat Thai food, and we were not disappointed with what was available on Angus's menu. Everything from cheese sandwiches (which we never ate...come on your in Thailand!!!) to wonderful green and red curry is available, and all are very moderately priced. Not the cheapest food we had in Thailand, but definitely not the most expensive--right down the middle. We ate at the resort at least once a day, and some days even for every meal! Beers, wine, and cocktails are priced about the same as anywhere else.
There is a lovely little salt water pool in the center of the resort, which was a great spot to relax and catch up on some reading and sunshine. The water temperature is perfect, and it is very clean. There is even a nice 1-2 foot wading area for little ones. There is also a nice little pool table in the eating area near the bar if you would like to shoot some 9-ball.
The location of the resort is on the edge of the Lamai Beach area on Koh Samui, just off the main island loop road and just a couple hundred meters inland. It is not right on the beach, but that just means it is much quieter than the rest of Lamai, and a bit more secure in my opinion. We never had an problems with theft while we were in Thailand, but we also avoided the super crowded areas--like right on the beach. You could walk to the water from the resort if you liked, but to get to the nicer beaches you would have to get a ride, which is not a problem because Angus or Hon will drop you off or pick you up for free. However, he also rents little motorbikes for dirt cheap, and this is what my girlfriend and I opted to do. This turned out to be one of our favorite parts of our trip to Koh Samui; zipping around the island, stopping wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted, and just doing our own thing. Sweet!
Just one note: there are no on-site spas or massage parlors or anything like that, but all of those things are only a 5-10 minute ride away. Also, Angus's place IS NOT a short walk from the nightlife in Lamai, but it is a FREE RIDE away, and a 200 baht taxi back if you wish to return later than 10:00 or 11:00.
We wanted to avoid all the package, group-touristy type things around the island, and Angus's place was the perfect jumping off point for us. However, if you do want to do some of the group tours, Angus will arrange nearly everything for you. He and is wife are doing a great job.
