We booked a standard room for two nights. A medium sized room with all amenities you would need. The rooms are cheap and has a real backpacker feel to it. The room had an interesting design with many decorations / paintings / cushions which made for a pleasant environment.

However I don't think any seasoned traveler would feel this was value for money. The room we stayed in was in need of a revamp (at least re-do the peeling walls) and the bathroom had a real "public bathroom" feeling to it, i.e. you wouldn't want to drop anything on the floor. The basin tap only dribbled water our entire stay. While individually, these issues are not an real problem for us, combined, it was disappointing.

The owner, Martin was friendly during our stay and the staff were good also. We didn't bother bringing up any of these issues with Martin, as from reading previous replies on Tripadvisor he seemed very defensive about all his rooms.

We ate only breakfast at the restaurant which was quite nice, if not a little small for the price we paid. All other meals were out of our budget.

We decided not to extend our stay, and instead found a much nicer, newer, larger, better condition room (with a balcony) for a cheaper price (500baht) 5min up the street. I feel if any of the other guests staying at Akwa were to look around at the competing guesthouse standards they would be quite shocked as we were!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review.

We at Akwa are a small very popular boutique style Guesthouse, and we run at almost 95% occupancy (so almost everyday fully booked). This puts a lot of pressure on the maintenance schedule we have. The room you stayed in, is scheduled for refurbishment this month.

The water pressure on the Island can sometimes be a problem, but you certainly should have mentioned it to me; I indeed prefer guests bring up issues they might have with the room during their stay, so we can find a solution, than complain about it afterwards on the internet.

Regarding the food we offer in our restaurant; for budget travelers, we do have Akwa's Happy Meal, which is a Thai dish from our menu with a Thai beer or soft drink, for only 135 thb.
We believe that this is an excellent quality/price proposed. Of course you can get again cheaper when snacking at the local 7/11 or market.

There are indeed many guesthouses around Chaweng, but we at Akwa do have some unique selling points (like the direct, 40 seconds walk, access to the beach, the free Wifi in all our rooms, the funky designed pop art style rooms, the large book and DVD library available everywhere in all our buildings), that we do believe (as do many many of our happy customers) we offer excellent quality price.

Kind regards
Martin

Arrived at Akwa following a Lonely Planet recommendation. The manager told us that the cheaper rooms are not available (not for us, as other travellers did get them after our arrival, and no booking was made). As we were tired from a long journey, we gave in and took the "Penthouse" room for 2 nights. The room is big, huge bed, a bathtub and dvd player (movies are available in room and corridors). A big terrace outside the sliding windows.
The A/C did not work and water was not running. The room was boiling, as it is the top floor and it was very unpleasant. Spent the second day in room as workers tried to fix the A/C fir 4 hours (!!).
Restaurant food was nice but expensive and really small and rather not satisfying portions.
We were not offered discount or any compensation and no alternative except of a "oh" from the manager.

Dear reviewer,

Thank you for your review.

Unfortunately we haven't met during your stay with us as I was traveling, but having spoken to my manager, I think your review is really strange.

You did not had a booking for a room when you walked in at our Guesthouse, and indeed only the Penthouse was available that night. (not sure why you state other/cheaper rooms were available that night?. I checked our system, and all other rooms were booked. Where did you get that information from? a little inappropriate to make such unfunded statements on public forum)

Anyway, we offered you a VERY discounted rate for the room (more than 60% off the standard rate), and you accepted the room.

When you took the room, both the air-conditioners were working (something we always check when we bring the guests to the room), but next morning one of them you reported as broken. It indeed took our engineer long time to fix it and replace the part. (there was no need for you to stay in the room during the repair, I assume this has been your own choice).

Not sure why you expected us to propose you an "alternative"; the air-conditioner was fixed during the same day...

Kind regards
Martin

The rooms are large and are decorated in an Art Deco theme. It brings a lot of character to the place. The a/c works well and the bed is super comfortable. The owner, Martin, is incredible. He goes above and beyond to make sure that you are comfortable and have everything you need. He rents out motorbikes for a good price and will go out of his way for his guests. Akwa feels more like an inn with Martin as the innkeeper. He is super friendly and interesting. I would highly recommend Akwa to budget travelers looking for a clean, nice, centrally located place with a friendly owner. The beach is a 2 minute walk away so that's a big plus too. Great stay and would definitely come back! Thanks Martin! :)

We arrived in Koh Samui after a long morning of travel, and eager to arrive at our hotel and relax. When we arrived to check in, a girl lead us off without explanation to a completely separate building about 100m down from the main building. She took us down a side street, which I was a little uncomfortable with, and up some stairs which lead to the rooms. The decor is quite funky, but looks a bit tired in some areas, tap and sink were hanging off the wall a bit but it was a liveable space. Ants were frequent visitors to our room, as we're mosquitoes - we were bitten to death each night but I suppose that can't really be helped. Some good points were that the room came with a tv and DVD player, along with a library of DVDs that you can watch at anytime, the room had a safe - although we couldn't get ours to work even after asking at reception. The rooms have wifi but the connection is very poor. Staff weren't very helpful but we didn't really have to deal with them too much. The price is moderate for what you get but in hindsight I think we could have found somewhere better for the same price. Located on the main Chaweng strip, but just enough out to avoid the noise. Overall - average.

I am travelling Thailand with a friend and we stayed at Akwa Guesthouse for 4 nights. When we arrived (after a pretty long car journey from the pier) we were pretty gutted. The outside is odd. You wouldnt think it was a hotel at all and its on a main street so you could easily miss it. We had to climb two sets of steps which are so steep and dangerous with heavy backpacks on to get to our room.. The room size was great - really big and the bathroom was nice. The interior again is not so much quirky, its just weird. We had a double bed which was a good size. However, straight away we noticed all the noise from the street - they have these stupid cars that blast out 'we will rock you' all day long for the boxing so we honestly thought it was going to be a nightmare. But by the time we were ready for bed most of the noise stopped as the hotel is pretty much at the end of the long street so wasnt all that bad. Location is actually ok. All you have to do is turn left when you get outside and that takes you along the street to shops, restaurants etc The traveller area of Samui is a bit of a walk away but not un-managable. The beach is not far away, and is great, we loved it. We have been to four islands consecutively and Samui is our favourite even though the accomodation was the worst. If youre a traveller, on a lower budget youd be fine here. Finally... we did have a hole in the ceiling which a rock fell through in the middle of the night. So watch your head!!!

Dear reviewer,

Thank you for your review.

Yes, indeed the thai stairs can be very steep, and some of ours indeed are. But we do have safety bars, and my staff is always willing to help you up with your luggage if needed.

Indeed our guesthouse is in world famous Chaweng, where there is a lot of party and night life entertainment. But we are in calm part, so indeed as of 10/11 pm, it is very quiet here, so you can enjoy a good night sleep.

We are happy to see you liked our rooms (although you could have mentioned what part of the room decoration you found "weird")

Kind regards

Me and a friend stayed here for a few days while travelling around. We had stayed in some more expensive hotels on our trip but wanted to stay somewhere cheaper for a few days. We paid 700 baht a night as we just walked in and asked how much it would be. The barmaid took us to the room, so we could see the room before agreeing to take the room. You get what you pay for. It was very clean and the room was not noisy. It is at the quieter end of the Chaewang beach, which we preferred (nice to sleep well). The staff were very pleasant and we eat breakfast in the bar several times. Nice little place if your on a budget. You also have a safe deposit box which was free! The Hilton, it is not but the Hilton is not 700 baht a night is it?

Room Tip: If you walk in and dont book in advance - ask to see the room first!

Dear reviewer,

Thank you for your review.

I fully agree with your comments; indeed we are not a 5 star Hilton, so it's all in your expectations.

Indeed guests can walk in and choose from the rooms available at that moment. The appreciation is so personnel; all our rooms are different, with all an individual colorful decoration based on a funky pop art style.

I have very bad reviews on this site for rooms which are loved by other guests; again it's all in the personnel expectations.

One other comment to come back on your walk in suggestion; just be warned that usually we are fully booked, and many times we have to disappoint guests looking for a room.

Kind regards
Martin
