“Laem Set Inn: great location, wonderful staff, poor value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2005

If location were everything, Laem Set Inn would have been on top. It is located far from the hassle and dirt of the main beaches on the island. Instead, it is placed perfectly on of the last few pristine beaches in Samui, where the sea is open wide, small fishing boats pass by, and the shores of distant islands are flicking at the horizon.
Another strength is the staff: friendly, cheerful, and honest. The restaurant is another high point. While the Western dishes are expectedly so-so, the Thai dishes are authentic, charming, and very spices. What a contrast to the jaded and rude people of the main beaches in Samui, who see tourists as cash cows to be swindled as often as possible.
The Inn could do better on its appearance and prices. The general feeling is that an overhaul renovation is way overdue. The rooms are rustic alright, but this is broken and that doesn’t work. The free beach equipment is free alright, but has clearly seen better days. All would have been forgivable in a hippy community, but not in a hotel that praises itself on elegance and charges the prices that Laem Set Inn demands.
Overall, a very pleasant place, but expect poor value for money. Also, bear in mind that Samui itself is not a pleasant place to visit, unless of course you enjoy being insulted, lied to, cheated, and robbed. But this is really not the Inn’s fault.

We stayed for 10 days at Laem Set after being recommended by a friend (who had enjoyed a great time there quite a while ago). I also read the previous damning review the day before we left and intended to go with an open mind.

The holiday in the end was enjoyable. The service was mixed and the whole place had a bit of a passed-its-prime feel. However this did mean it was very, *very*, quiet and relaxing. The food was good and the prices 'reasonable'.

However this is no longer the Laem Set Inn of legend (or of the quotes they still advertise with). The ownership has changed and the place, and "philosophy" and style has too. The main problem is that the place no longer lives up to the hype. Maybe it will recover it's glory one day - but it has a lot of catching up to do.

I went with my family to this hotel. I thought it was a 5 star experience in a beautiful tropical setting. The place was a dive. When I got there I was in shock at the place. It was like a motel in the US. Although it had a view of the beach, it was nowhere near the level of a 3 star hotel in the US. Also the prices of the hotel and the resteraunt within the hotel are much higher than all the hotels in the area. There is also no swimmable beach near the hotel. Its kind of sad flying 28 hours to get to Thailand to enjoy the beach and find nothing but a bunch of rocks. This hotel is also VERY VERY far from other hotels and beaches. Please be sure to check out all the different resorts on Koh Samui before booking this hotel. The only possible good thing about this hotel is that its good for families with little kids that don't mind isolation. If you are expecting a luxurious five star vacation, this defintely is not it.
