We decided to spend the first day of 2014 at Tamarind Springs, and if the rest of this year is anything like that glorious first day, then we are in for a spectacular year. We arrived around 9 am and were instantly in awe of the beautiful landscape in which the spa is situated. We were greeted by the most polite, soft-spoken women and given, undoubtedly, our favorite drink of the trip, a tamarind ginger juice.
After trading in our shoes for complimentary rubber sandals (which were absolutely necessary for navigating the slick wooden and stone walkways), we were each presented with a straw tote bag containing a towel, two sarongs, disposable briefs for the massage, and a locker key. After a quick change and tour, we spent an hour and a half hopping from delightfully warm steam caves to refreshingly cool pools.
There are two steam caves, one cooler than the other, and three cold pools, all varying temperatures. Two scrubs are offered, Tamarind Honey and Ginger, as well as directions and steps for yielding maximum benefits. There is a complimentary refreshment bar with coffee, three types of delicious tea, virgin mojitos, and that mind-blowing tamarind ginger juice (which have I mentioned is amazing?!).
We booked the Forest Dreaming package, which is quite pricey, but definitely worth every cent. After indulging in the steam caves and plunge pools for an hour and a half, we were taken to an open-air hut on the top of a mountain for our two and a half hour massages. I chose the Classic Oil Massage with the Foot Reflexology Massage while my husband chose the Thai Herb Massage. We were both next to each other, which is always nice. The sounds of birds chirping and palm trees softly blowing in the wind was utterly blissful.
The masseuses were unbelievably strong, yet extremely delicate. I have never had a masseuse who took such care when moving an arm or pillow, or fixed my hair at the end with such carefulness. We had several massages (at fancy establishments) while spending two weeks in Thailand, and this was, by far, the best experience. I highly recommend this spa for ultimate relaxation.
After our massages, we were served a scrumptious vegan lunch of tofu summer rolls and tofu sesame cakes, with two delightful ginger dipping sauces, along with passion fruit and pineapple.
I definitely recommend going early; we were the first ones there and it was magical to have the place to ourselves. After a half hour, several more couples arrived and while it was not crowded, it was surely less enjoyable (the bag hooks outside the steam caves were all taken, the scrubs were picked through, the refreshment bar was packed, etc.).
Overall, this was the highlight of our trip to Koh Samui and we can’t wait to return to the magical forests of Tamarind Springs.
