“New-found respect for the Conrad/Hilton Brand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2012

I have a new-found respect for the Conrad/ Hilton brand names after my recent stay at the new Conrad Koh Samui. Only 5 months into operation, the hotel is clearly run by a strong and dedicated management team with the experience to make things work without much of the early-stage glitches of so many new resorts we have stayed in. Our previous stay at Koh Samui 2 years ago was at the Four Seasons Resort, which was a superb and plush experience. The Conrad at Koh Samui offers a more simple concept which is no less enjoyable (and dents the pocket a little less) : a well-run resort, styled with minimalist simplicity, with no staff shortages (read: enough housekeeping carts, enough buggies which arrived promptly when called, enough restaurant staff, enough telephone operators) and clearly well-trained and high-moraled staff (note-worthy are the lovely staff who brought my daughter to the pier to feed the colorful fish, the restaurant staff at the poolside who rushed up with an ice pack and free ice cream when she scraped her knee, the staff at Zest restaurant who uncomplainingly changed her meal order when it was served with wheat which she has an allergy to)....

The villa has a beautiful unblocked view of the open sea, with amazing sunsets which you can enjoy from your own sizeable infinity pool. The simplicity is something we appreciated (although those expecting luxurious bath salts, fruit bowls, music and incense burning might not feel the same). It was quiet, simple, unadorned. We enjoyed the internet/ TV/ free latest movies/ menus on the very-modern Apple-based IT system. Everything was as clean, smooth and efficient as one might expect of a 5 star hotel. The staff was excellent- friendly without being intrusive, efficient without being rushed, and we never got the feeling that corners were being cut to save on operating costs.

We loved it so much we even went to check out the Residences which are on sale!

Some minor drawbacks: it takes about 45 minutes to get there from the airport, which is twice as long as it takes to get to the other resorts such as Four Seasons or W Hotel. There is also not much beach for those looking to spend time on one. The Kids' Club was not as well-organized as that of the Four Seasons- the staff was less well-trained but equally sweet and kind to the children. The bed did not have individual-springs so each time my husband turned the entire bed shifted, waking me up!

we spent 4 nights here in early Jan and enjoyed every minute.
The staff is fantastic and the rooms and views cannot be beat.
Even though it can be tough to walk around the property, calling for the buggy service was never an issue as they always showed within 5 minutes or less.
i recommend renting a car on Koh Samui when staying here as getting around on the island without one can be a hassle and the car expense of $127 for 4 days was minor - do it in advance as they sell out.

Talking about a hotel with character, extra ordinary service and attention to detail. Spending 6 nights was an absolute bliss...Even though the beach is not the strongest point, the infinity pool in every villa and the privacy you get makes up for it.

The hotel is located in a great hide away from the busy Koh Samui, so advice is to rent a car if you need to make short trips to the "outside world".

Great thanks to everyone for making our stay so great from Kate, Ink and Aom in the reception to Roman and his team in the Food & Beverage.

Greatly recommended...

Room Tip: Every villa is equally excellent!!!

Conrad Koh Samui is an idyllic holiday resort carved into a stunning cliff by the sea. They have excelled in creating stunning villas to cater for your every need. Inside a 2 bedroom villa they're2 large washrooms and one toilet. In addition they're is a dining room to seat up to for and a small kitchen. A large living space is provided with a television to browse all the latest genres of film as well as a mac computer built in. Heading downstairs, there are two spacey bedrooms both with a large closet and an en-suite bathroom with a state of the art bathroom. Outside they're is a sitting area and three deck chairs to accompany the surprisingly large pool. If you wish to leave your air conditioned villa a 24 hour buggy service (however the buggies have a tendency to usually be a little late so a recommendation would be to call up in advance)will take you to the resorts excellent facilities such as the large infinity pool with over the water sun loungers. A poolside restaurant serves up many classics such as it's delicious burgers. For all water sport lovers there is a designated centre however as you will soon discover actually offers virtually no water sports to speak of, despite having excellent waters to swim in. Another disappointment was the thin slither of beach that offers a little less than 6 and a half feet of sand at low tide. To compensate a large pier is provided on the left wing of the beach.
Conrad Koh Samui has five restaurants to choose from: The cellar which houses over 2,000 matured wines, Azure, which has a easy going feel to it, Zest, the all day dining restaurant( ideal for families with small children), Glow, an extremely upmarket bar, and finally the hotels fine dining restaurant Jahn, which offers a 3 course deluxe meal.
Other facilities include the fitness centre which houses a many great machines keep you fit. As well as this they're is a boutique, library and for younger holiday makers a kids club. The resort provides other activities too that include cookery courses, fishing and many more.
If you wish to get out of the hotel the Conrad provides a taxi service with a driver to chauffeur you around Samui. Although all of the staff mean well i recommend you brush up on your Thai as many of the staffs English is poor or very difficult to understand and you may have to resort to speaking Thai.
I hope you have a pleasant stay and enjoy it just as much as we did!!!!

Room Tip: More elevated rooms tend to be more quiet as they are further away from the main hotel. In addition...

this is a real part of the conrad family. Everything you can expect, you will get.
Butller idea is great and they were lovely.
The villas are fantastic, with amazing views. The sea is not really good to swim ; very dirty beach and brown water. Maybe hire some staff to keep the beach a bit more clean would be good.
The location can be a bit remote for some and the resort is designed to spend most, if not all your time in there.
Staff is well trained and Thai friendly. Organizing something different (different locations) can be a bit of a problem sometimes, but, since the resort is designed to keep you in, the staff is probably trained to do so as well.
The restaurant is great, although quite expensive. A tip would be to go to Fai restaurant, just around the corner, which serves great food for less than half the price.
If you have the money to pay for a great stay on a tropical island and if you are willing to pay for it, the conrad (just like all conrad hotels) is for sure absolutely worth a visit. Since the location is quite remote, we would recommend 3 or 4 days would be a perfect time.

The hotel is an architectural marvel. The resort has built villas on stilts into the hilside. Each villa has infinity pool and excellent views of the sea and tiny islands in the distance. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and luxurious.

Food was excellent in all restaurants. This Conrad has an diverse and well presented breakfast buffet which was a welcome change to the Hilton standard. (Not that the standard is bad, just that I am bored with that after years of staying 60+ nights a year). So the breakfast is divine. Loved it.
I didn't find the food expensive as other reviews are complaining. $15 for a sandwich or Pad Thai in the regular restaurant. Jahn- the high end restaurant has a michellin chef. Dinner is a 7 course meal of high quality and around $100 per person + drinks. This meal would cost more in the US or Europe or any of the other conrad properties. The service and facilities are high end.

Cooking class was fun, informative and delicious.
Spa is beautiful.

Other reviews are complaining of the location - "being far from the action." For me, this is precisely the appeal. The Conrad has an amazing view, is serene and isolated. Far and away from all the tourist trap clusters of noise and activity. Perfect!

If you want to leave the property to have a chance of scenery - I recommend the The Five Islands Restaurant, just 10 minutes away. They will provide free transport to and from the hotel.

The beach is a small strip of sand that was littered with debris that had washed ashore. It wasn't inviting. The management should think of having that cleaned up each morning and perhaps that would help the ambiance.

Room Tip: all rooms are equal in size and design with excellent views

Our family or two adults and two teenagers (16 and 14) stayed at this resort for 9 nights as we came from Australia, and wanted a long break. We booked a 2-bedroom villa (which transpired as being exactly as described in all the resort's marketing material).

Major positives: We are regular Four Seasons users and fans and choose our holiday destinations and specific resorts carefully. Generally, we endorse every one of the highly positive attributes listed by other satisfied reviewers here. This is a stunning property in terms of location, quality and siting of rooms and general facilities, the overall service 'culture' and staff competence and, we felt, sincere friendliness and willingness to create a warm and engaging experience for guests by virtually every staff member we encountered. Conrad has done an excellent job in getting this resort to this standard within just 2 months of its official November 2011 opening. Our family had a great time here, and the negatives below did not detract from that outcome. Although not a 'high activity' type of resort, our kids honestly did not want to leave!

Negatives: agree with a recent reviewer: the third-grade mini-beach was not well cleaned and maintained and storm water-derived rubbish was routinely trapped by the new pier and not cleaned away fast enough. And the sparse and incomplete landscaping near the beach area let the whole resort down somewhat (as the general landscaping elsewhere was remarkably good for a very new resort). There are unfortunate, wafting septic-like odours near the Fitness Center and at the very northern end of the pool's cabanas. The Fitness Center has a musty odour throughout - I suspect poor drainage nearby or a poorly cleansed a/c set up there. Food and wine etc standards were generally high (as would be rightly expected at this room price point), but the prices were bordering on gouging when we compared them with 5-star hotels in say Bangkok. The resort lacks a really good, spacious casual covered bar for all-day relaxing, and the communal facilities, restaurants, etc all felt roughly 20% smaller than ideal when at peak usage with high occupancy over the Xmas period - this constraint is likely driven by the very high cost of building on such a steep site.

The location of the resort is isolated and, as other reviewers have noted, alternative dining venues and 'night life' are 30-40+ minute drives away, and longer (and the tourist strips are often disappointingly seedy and low-rent). Recommended eating trips: Six Senses hotel for dinner or lunch 'on the rock', and the lovely, very rustic, Five Islands Restaurant 10 minutes away with its charming English owner and good local food (and sensibly priced fun boat trips from there to visits the nearby islands). Be discerning: many local restaurants are distinguished far more by their marketing than their actual quality.

All in all, right now this resort is (comparatively) attractively priced yet presents a world-class location and 'total 5-star product'. We found senior management present, attentive and committed. It will only get better but is terrific today.
