I stayed here w/ my family, group of 4, my wife and 2 kids. Stayed for 3 nights.
We arrived on a Sunday night, totally exhausted!! and Pai kindly prepared a nice dinner for us. It was the very first Thai food in Thailand, tasted great, and felt welcomed. After we ate, found out that they usually don't make dinner on Sundays (because all guests eat out at Sunday night markets), and felt even MORE welcomed to the Secret Garden.
During our stay, we went on an excursion, that Peter booked for us, "experience to be a mahout (elephant care taker) for one day"!, Had a wonderful time! My girls still cannot forget about her elephant that she took care of and are probably going to visit there again in the near future. If you want to do something special, ask Peter, (the hosts ) for advise. Very reliable.
Also, we rented a bicycle, and visited a village near the Secret Garden. 10min~15min ride. There are paper craft stores, clothes stores, all kinds of local stores! We bargained and bought few things for friends back home. Was quite exciting!!
Have to admit, It's a little bit dangerous because there are no lanes for bicycles, so little kids should maybe ride behind (with) the adults if you want to visit the village w/ bikes.
We visited the city too. We only spent 80 bhts(20bhts /1person for bus ride) all together for transportation during our stay. From Borsang to city, and from the city to Borsang.
From and To Borsang bus stop, Peter will give you a ride. People might seem to feel Secret Garden is inconvienient, but staying here was a great experience for my children. They got to know how to read a map and ride local buses, in a foreign country! It was challenging and actually fun!
Ofcourse, the room, the atmosphere was very satisfying. Yes, the dogs bark, chicken wakes you up, people sings in the morning, mosquito bites, power goes down (not always)...but this was not a big deal to us. and if there was a problem, Peter and Pai tries so hard to solve these things for you, and their hospitality and their hard work covers it all up.
I gave this place "5stars" because we had wonderful time in Chiang Mai, thanks to the hosts.
There may be more luxuriuos hotels in the city, but here, I honestly think you will get more than what you pay for, and feel MORE welcomed.
Thanx for sending us the recipe! Next time gotta get cooking lessons from Pai.

Dear Mari ,

Thank you for giving us 5 stars , and thanks for telling us that you really felt welcome at our place ,
which actually is the most important for us . High season is still going on, and many people have to book in advance for the elephant day trip sometimes, because it's just so full! But we're glad you and your family got to experience it and that the kids enjoyed it. It's definitely one of those things one can look back on and say " remember that time when we rode on an elephant? " We don't really get the chance to stroll around Borsang, and driving by in the car doesn't really cut it. So sometimes when guests come back with their daily shopping, we're amazed at all the things they find! We're not a typical hotel, we don't have a 'lobby' or a front desk, and yes, the things you mentioned do happen sometimes, dogs barking and chicken/birds singing away in the morning and so on, but we really do try our best to make sure all our guests are happy and to be of assistance. So we hope our future guests will take us for what and who we are, and enjoy their stay here despite all the little things that can happen. Like I mentioned earlier, when someone says that they felt welcomed and that "you will get more than what you pay for" it brings the biggest smile to our faces! So thank you . :) Wishing you and your family the very best for the near year, and perhaps we will see you again in the near future.
Much love from the Secret Garden.
