“Hippie chic residence”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2012

Descriped by Nancy Chandler as a hippie chic boutique hotel, Chiang maan residence is a beautiful stylish accomodation.

The room is not very spacious but just enough to put your luggage on the floor and your clothes can be put in the wardrobe. The bed is in an elevated wood case and has a mosquito net covering it. There were the bamboo stores and golden silk curtains, with view on the very well kept garden.
The bathroom has a powerful shower but water doesn't get very hot.
The mix of wood and concrete is very beautiful and welcoming.

The neighborhood is very good, close to everything and quiet, except for sometimes the dog barks but it doesn't last long .

We have a lot of sympathy for the helpful owner, he's a very kind person.
The residence makes you feel at home, we really enjoyed our stay and will be back.

This fully renovated traditional Thai house in a small alley of old town was by far the most charming and cosy accommodation I ever had in Thailand!
The mix of concrete and teak wood is amazingly warm and welcoming and the influence of traditional Thai carpentry is top of the crop gusto.
The only noise that could disturb your sleep might be the charming owner that lives in the house as well and loves to work his beautiful garden in the morning hours. But this is rather amiable than disruptive.
Chiang Maan Residence is a precious with an outstanding price/value ratio. Make sure to book ahead - rooms are very limited.

I was worried by the lack of reviews on this site for the Chiang Maan Residence. I haven't written many reviews, but I wanted to add one in support of this hotel. "Intimate" is definitely the word to describe it. There are only four rooms, and the owner lives upstairs. The accommodations are comfortable, and the place has a relaxed, local feel. "Hot" water is a generous descriptor for the shower, and we did have a small problem with ants while we were there, but the staff took care of everything. They were friendly and kind, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Chiang Mai and at the Chiang Maan. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.

My husband and I stayed at the Chiang Maan Residence for a few days when we visited Chiang Mai during our honeymoon. This place is great! It's nicely put together, in a great location, has a wonderful and helpful proprietor, and is a great value. We went to Chiang Mai to see the city and just needed a clean place to put our stuff and sleep. The Chiang Maan residence did more than deliver on that. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

I friend of mine who used to live in Chiang Mai recomended this place to me. It is a very quaint place only 4 rooms for a good price, 1050 baht. It has aircon, wifi and good hot showers. It is in a great location for walking around Chiang Mai. The owner is a young architect who lives in Bangkok. Her father runs the place. She took an old house and rennovated it. It is decorated beautifully. This is a very chill type of place. You come and stay. No one will bother you. They are very friendly and I felt very safe there. I would definitely stay again.

I think this boutique hotel is great - exclusive, personal, hospitable and value for money. I love everything there, from the design (a daughter's work specially for her retired dad), the host Sooop (sorry didn't know how to spell it), the lovely little charismatic doggie to those lovely white flowers laying on dew-moistened lawn... Though it is further away from the riverside but who actually wants to stay at the commercialised and touristy place? This place has everything you need for your trip, good and wonderfully cheap food, bicycle/ bike rental, laundry and even home-styled massage.. I just love it there, it gave me and my husband a good taste of chiang mai's laidback lifestyle as well as great memory..

This is a small place - only 4 rooms. Price is around 1000 Thb, which is more than many places but fairly reasonable.

We took a minibus from the train station after an overnight train from Bangkok. The driver had trouble finding it, but we got there eventually. The owner didn't say much to us - maybe he was happy to leave us to ourselves while listening to his jazz in the evening.

The rooms are quite tastefully decorated - it all looks nice but was missing some things such as hooks to hang clothes, a fridge for beer, or two seats to sit on! There are outside seats - but the mosquitoes will bite, and you are just looking at a wall - there's no view.

The shower was hot and fairly good - but caused the bathroom to flood. The main problem was towels - they were just put out under the sun each day by the cleaner - we didn't get new ones.

The location is fairly central There are small restaurants and cafes around 10 minutes walk away near other guesthouses.

The main good thing about the place is that you are away from the backpacking scene which can be a bit much in Chiang Mai. It is quiet and relaxing. However, if I was going again, I'd try to find somewhere on a higher floor with a balcony.
