We stayed at Fern Paradise in Chiang Mai and it turned out a real gem! There are ricebarns that have been turned into cottages. The cottages are clean, have nice beds, tv and dvd (dvds are available), hot shower etc. The whole resort is covered in ferns so it feels like you are in the middle of the jungle.
Dr. Niwat has a passion for ferns and gives you a tour of the resort. Everything is kept really clean and the staff are very friendly. It is not like a big resort with room service and meals around the clock but if you want to have lunch or dinner you can order from the menu and it will be served about an hour later. The food was very good and at a good price. Breakfast is on a little terrace near a stream and consists of coffee or tea, fresh fruitjuice, everyday a different kind of fruit, eggs, toast and jam. We went on several tours in the area. We went on a private tour with Mr. Pon to the elephant hospital where there were victims of landmines and one of them, Mosa, got an artificial leg while we were in Thailand! We also went to The Elephant conservation Centre but we didn't ride the elephants because carrying a seat with people on their backs appears to be very painful for elephants. Another tour we did was to Chiang Rai, The Golden Triangle, Laos and Myanmar. This was also very impressive. We took a cooking class and we visited a traditional dinner show called Khum Khantoke. Everything was arranged by Fern Paradise and we enjoyed our stay in Chiang Mai very much. If there is one thing we did not like it was the fact that we had to pay for the transfer to and from the resort on arrival and departure. I think it would be nicer if this was already included in the total price. If we ever return to Chiang Mai we hope to visit Fern Paradise again.
