“Fantastic Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2007

Myself and my boyfriend stayed in Julie's for 3 nights in Feb 2007 during our 2 week holiday to Thailand. We paid approximately €6 for a garden room. It was painted in nice bright colours - small but perfect for what you pay there was no complaints. The chill out area is fab. We had our dinner brought to us here where there are hammocks and cushions all around the place and nice nightlights. We also booked a tour through Julies - the 1 day trek which was great. The location is great - its really quiet but only 10mins walk to the gates. We paid 50B to get to the night Bazaar by tuk tuk. There are massage parlours around the corner from Julie's where we got fab leg massages and Thai herbal massages.

Julies had a real laid back vibe. The food is also great and very reasonable. We love Chaing Mai and would return to Julie's again.

  • Liked — The food and the price
  • Disliked — The bathroom was a tiny bit basic but it was only €6 for the room!

I stayed in February 2007.
I originally booked for 3 nights, but had to stay longer as I got sick. Once they found out I couldn't do a trek I was moved to one of the poorer rooms on the roof, which are very noisey, have lots of creepy crawlies and you have to share a bathroom. Okay if you like roughing it as it only cost 100Baht. But the rooms on the website are MUCH better and cost only 60B more (they're also a lot cleaner and en-suite).
Make sure you can stay in one of the better rooms.
This G-House is great for meeting people and I recommend it for single travellers. The locaton is great with laundry and internet services nearby. Its also close to the Eastern moat, Boots, Starbucks and Sangthaw routes. There is an area at the front with a TV and pool table and a swap-library, and another area on the roof where people chill at night in hammocks. The food is good, especially the Baguettes.
The G-House is Swiss German run so there are mostly German speakers staying here, but also lots of other Europeans. The staff are generally helpful and they will keep your bags safe whilst you do a trek, or when you check-out. And if you decide that you want to move to a hotel with even cheaper rooms, there are some nearby for 80B a night with en-suite (such as Whiskeys), ask someone in the foyer (but obv not the staff!).

  • Liked — The en-suite rooms are fantastic value for money. Clean and spacious.
  • Disliked — The shared bathroom rooms are horrid, dirty, noisey and bathrooms not clean.

We stayed here for three nights and we are heading back for more after our current stay further north.

For 300baht a night you get a lovely little room with hot private shower, the chill out areas are lovely too with lots of places to sit including hammocks and large seats. The other guests in the place also seemed nice which added to the relaxed atmosphere.

The food is excellent value for money too, try the banana milk shakes - they are great! You write your drinks in a book and pay when you leave, food is also added to your bill.

Location is good for old town but also convenient for travel to night market.

You can reserve a few days ahead on their website, it seems (understandably) popular.

I stayed here at the end of January 2007. I got a room for 130 baht a night. It was clean, reasonably sized, double bed, cupboard for clothes, and an en suite bathroom which had cold water. This was not really a problem as I was allowed to use the shared bathroom for the dorm rooms which did have hot water. If you'd like a room with hot water, then I suggest you book ahead. I tried to but the deluxe rooms were already booked out.

The guesthouse is in a good location, about a 10 minute walk away from all the bars and nightlife, so it is quite quiet. The staff are very helpful and I signed up for one of their adventure tours. Elephant trekking, white water rafting, bamboo rafting, a trek through jungle to a waterfall, and also a visit to an orchid farm - all for 1100 baht. Be careful with the white water rafting, our raft capsized and I smashed my head and knee against rocks. Luckily for my head I was wearing a helmet. Also, the temperature is not too hot this time of year, so it can be quite cool on the river - bring a sweater or a change of water. Our raft was waterlogged and sank.

The guesthouse also helped me book my train ticket back to Bangkok for a 70 baht booking fee.

All in all, very good value for money, considering the cleanliness of the rooms, and the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff.

Found Julie Guesthouse while looking online for accommodation in Chaing Mai. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We had great communications while making our booking. The rooms are basic, clean and comfortable. It has a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. I would recommend it and most certainly would stay there again.

We found out about Julie by word of mouth - literally everyone who stayed in Chaing Mai recommended it to us. This place was dirt cheap for fantastic rooms with fans and comfortable beds and nice private bathroom and clean. The staff will take you anywhere and are knowledgable about their trips and incredibly helpful and friendly. Sam Song is the favourite tipple and they are always happy to share with you. They work on honesty and rely on you to write down all yoour food and drink details.
There is a fantastic roof top chill out area with hammocks and a great view and two further chill out areas downstairs.
Stongly recommend if you are in Chaing Mai!
