“cheap and cheerful, good social scene.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

rooms basic but for 70 baht a dorm its good, when I arrived I had no booking and it was about 7am the reception doesn't open until 8 by the guy who was there was able to let me in a room have a sleep and check in later on in the day. Although I was paying for a dorm they were full so I was given a double room (a bunk bed) for the same price and they would offer the second bed to another backpacker wanting a dorm. Great social area with meals and a fridge full of beer, pool table and wifi, stayed 3 nights but would have stayed longer if it hadn't been booked out. would recommend staying at julies.

It was fully booked but we really wanted to stay from the moment we walked in to the chillout area so we booked for the next day, and I'm so glad we did! We met some of the coolest people ever and it's the nicest place to chill and play pool during the day if you have no major plans to go exploring.

There rooms are cheap, but not great... really uncomfortable beds and hot rooms, even with a fan can get quite unbearable. The atmosphere downstairs was very 'western touristy'. Everyone would sit around either getting wasted, or on macbooks, however the roof had a nice atmosphere and we met some really nice people up there. The staff were odd.. When we first arrived they asked if we had pre-booked, which we hadn't... they gave us a hard time, but then gave us a room, but told us we would have to leave the next day because it was reserved, which we think was lie... We ended up staying in our room for 3 nights. Also my boyfriend got really sick, with a super high temperature. When we asked to use their phone they refused... Overall was very okay experience and the food was realllllly okay, you can find much better food in Chiang Mai.

The atmosphere in the reception area was the worst case Backpacker meeting point we ever saw. Dressed up Party people drinking beer and relaxing with there MacBooks there the whole day. A lot of staff running around as well that only where friendly to us when we arrived.

The prices for their tours and tickets are definitely overpriced and also the room was not what you can get for the money in this area of Thailand.

The only reason we stayed for some days was the fact that nobody of all this hip Backpackers is staying in the second garden behind the reception because it has no WiFi....

Anyway there will be better values in this area for sure...

I was in Chiang Mai for ten days but I did not stay at Julie's even one night. Instead my friend and I hung out there almost everyday. This is one of the most social hostels I've seen in the world and I've seen a lot. I must say the staff was not at all friendly but all the travelers we met there were great. Everyone just relaxing on the couches, eating, drinking, falling asleep, playing cool. Food was pretty good and the prices were very reasonable. If you like something a bit more fancy like me, stay somewhere else and go there to meet cool people.

very colourful and social, which instantly draws you in. We were in a double bed private room but the fan kept breaking down. They did manage to fix it by nightfall though, thankfully. Food is reasonably priced and it's also close to two awesome cafes, Funky Monkey and the Mickey Mouse cafe (right at the entrance of the lane Julie's is down). They do have a travel agency inside who sorted everything out for us as well!

Staff were extremely rude and cocky. They are really unhelpful and walk around with a scowl. The rooms were ok but for a dorm you can pay 20baht more for J.J's next door and get really friendly staff. If it wasn't for the poor service, this place would be great. Its a shame.
