“One of the most memorable hotel experiences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2009

We (my husband, our three-year-old son and I) stayed at Puripunn Baby Grand Boutique Hotel for seven nights in October, and we truly had a great time there. The hotel's service was excellent, and the staff was very friendly and professional. They were so nice to our son, as well. We stayed in the Baby Suite Room, and it was very spacious and perfect for our family. What makes this hotel unique is its unique atmosphere. It offers the best of both worlds - the traditional Thai cultural atmosphere and the modern, luxurious amenities. You cannot get the experience at international hotel chains. We could tell that this hotel was made with great passion. During our stay, we got to know the owner and his family and learned how they built the hotel from scratch. A great story... We stayed at the hotel for just one week, but we felt that we were part of the family. We definitely want to go back there sometimes in the near future. We felt truly fortunate to have found this hotel.

My husband and I were looking for a short relaxing weekend retreat and I think Puripunn managed to accomplish that for us. The rooms were nice and spacious enough. The staff were friendly and courteous and the interaction we had with them made me want to go back to Thailand again. Breakfast was small but intimate. The staff offered us noodles with soup on the second day of our stay even though it was not on the breakfast table as they observed on the first day that we liked it. Although the hotel is not located along the main room and is hidden within a residential estate, it was just a short walk out to the main road and there are many tuk tuk easily available. It is also a short walk to River Ping where there are a few restaurants and food is good there. We had a lunch at the hotel's restaurant, although more expensive than outside, but it was delicious and very generous in terms of its serving. On the whole, it is a great hotel and we really enjoyed our stay.

This hotel is about 15-20 mins away from the Chiang Mai airport. The cost for a taxi was about 150baht for 2 people. Difficult to find if you don't know where you are going. We arrived in the morning and were greeted by the friendly staff. Entering the hotel was like entering another world. The hotel is surrounded by a wall to keep its privacy. The garden is beautiful, full of trees, bushes and flowers. To the right is a cute restaurant out in the open. The hotel has lots of character, with all the natural woods in the structure of the building. After being greeted and signing in, we were given cool towels to clean our faces and a cup of soothing tea to cool us down. We went to our room on the 3rd and top floor (no elevators). Our room was 304 (last room, end of hall). The doors were french doors, so both swung open. The room had vaulted ceilings that were at least 14 feet high. The colour of the room was very zen and relaxing. The bathroom was beautiful and clean. It had a huge tub but only fit one person comfortably. The shower head would be the only complaint, it shot water out like bullets from a machine gun. Plus, the water temperature would fluctuate from cold to hot. For baths, it was wonderful. The room had a balcony and it had a bench built into it. It overlooked the pool and garden. Perfect for the morning, to sit out and read. We had a king sized bed which was very comfortable. Bed was turned down every evening. They offered internet service at no extra cost. That was handy to check flight schedules or email friends. The pool was lovely, especially for the hot humid days. It was a bit cold (temp.) but better than being warm. They had breakfast included in our stay. It was an american style breakfast, eggs and bacon. I think you could also order a Thai breakfast. The food was good but more expensive than in the city. The hotel was not in the heart of downtown core. It was about 15-20mins to walk to the night bazaar and to get to the outside walls of the old city was about 45mins walk. We just took a tuk tuk which could be bargained at 40-60 baht one-way. They also offered a complimentary drop-off service to one of the walls of the old city. I definitely would stay at this boutique hotel again.

This Hotel is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, which we loved. On my many business trips to Thailand/Chiang Mai from the US, I find that i always wake very early due to jet lag. In the early mornings, while it's still cool, I love to take walks around the area. This hotel being in a residential area is far more interesting than walking around closed businesses. Take a good camera and capture true Thai lifestyle.

The person in previous reviews who suggested that the area was unsafe, clearly doesn't understand Thailand or the Thai people.

Also great about this small hotel! No crowds, or lines, and you get very attentive and friendly service. And unlike the larger hotels, internet (WIFI) is free.

While the breakfast is fairly standard, and not as robust as the larger hotels, who cares?

Your in northern Thailand! Don't pine away for, and fill your tummy with eggs and toast! You can eat that at home.

Got to Warorot Market, and take yourself on a culinary tour and try all the many fresh foods there. (there is a vendor in the main building that sells the best northern style sausage. You can distinguish her from the other sausage sellers, by the constant crowd of sausage buyers at her stall.) The food is so inexpensive, if you buy something you don't like....give it away. Bought too much, make a friend and share it.

This hotel is very peaceful and tranquil. The gardens and pool are amazing. The colonial Thai style is really cool too.

Highly recommend it.

My husband I stayed at the Puripunn Baby Grand Boutique Hotel for 10 nights the last week in October and into early November 2009. Our vacation to Chiang Mai was fantastic and our stay at this hotel was lovely. We had perfect weather – not a drop of rain during our 10 days stay. Temperature highs in the upper 80’s low 90’s with some humidity.
Hotel Staff: The staff was extremely courteous and helpful. Most could speak English very well. They were helpful helping us book tours and with advice on what things to do. The owner was on site and connected with us on several occasions to make sure we were happy. The chefs were talented! The grounds well tended by a quiet gardener.
Hotel Food: Breakfast was included with our stay. It was served in a lovely open air dining area. The coffee and food was excellent! Espresso and Cappuccino was available too. The breakfast buffet featured European style meats and cheeses, yogurt, granola, wonderful local fresh fruit (try the dragon fruit – so yummy!), pastries, breads and more. In addition you can have any kind of eggs cooked to order with bacon or sausage. They even will serve French toast and waffles too. We ate one dinner at the hotel and it was one of the best we experienced.
Hotel Rooms and Amenities: The bed was very comfortable. AC was great. Shower and bathroom were wonderful. The room was very clean and hotel staff kept fresh towels for us along with a bowl of fresh fruit and fresh flowers. The TV had about 4 stations in English. The room had a safe, hairdryer, and refrigerator. The pool was clean and the lounge chairs comfortable. The pool was colder than I expected. There was free HiFi that was reasonably fast.
Hotel Location: An easy and safe walk to the Night Bazaar, China town, and the restaurants along the Ping River. There was an ATM very close by. I am a bit of a timid traveler, but I felt safer walking the streets of Chiang Mai than I have felt in most other places I have vacationed (like the Caribbean, Central America or Europe).
Loy Krathong Festival: We were very fortunate to witness this wonderful event. There were parades for at least 2 nights with Thai traditional costumes and floats. The floating lanterns and river offerings were awesome to participate in. We found that the crowds of people, particularly along the Ping River bridges, were overwhelming to us. There was no regulation of the fireworks, bottle rockets, and sparklers and they were being set off all over the place. By 9:00 pm we felt it safer to retreat to our hotel room. In our room we could hear fireworks until the 5 or 6 in the morning. The hotel actually supplied complimentary ear plugs for us!
Trekking and Day Trips: Our favorite was the trip to the elephant camp. We hired a car and driver and went to the Maesa Elephant Camp. We watched a show and then rode and elephant for an hour through the jungle. It was awesome. After the ride we walked to the elephant nursery and saw the babies. We got some special elephant time with mahouts who were eager to allow the elephants to dazzle us.
We booked two tours through the TAT office – the tours were through Journey. One was to the Golden Triangle. That trip was 7 am to 7 pm. A really long day! But worth it. Visiting the White Temple in Chiang Rai was quite a sight. The other tour was supposed to be an Elephant riding/river rafting trip, but the tour office booked us on the wrong tour and we didn’t know until we were in the tour bus and on the road. We ended up going to the Doi Inthanon National Park and the Royal Horticultural Gardens. It was a nice quiet trip so it was fine.
The tours with Journey are great, but we found these all day trips tiring and after a while tedious. If you do them, allow a day between tours to do other things so that you don’t end up feeling couped up. The vans are comfortable and they provide water and plenty of stops along the way. Our guides were May and Cookie. Both were very intelligent and vivacious young Thai women who spoke excellent English.
City Stuff: Don’t plan on driving. The traffic is crazy! Tuk Tuks are easy to use and cheap. We used them almost exclusively. We walked a lot too, but high 80’s temperature was really hot for us folks from cold Maine country. We loved the energy of China Town. So many shops and food stalls. We found a tailor and had some clothes made – CM Custom Tailor. The owner’s name is David and he’s great. Stop by and see him. We had a suit made and 4 dress shirts. His staff did a lovely job and the price was right!
We had 2 hour massages at the Oasis Spa in Chiang Mai. WONDERFUL!!!!!
Food: We liked the Gallery Restaurant along the Ping River. We ate at the Good View too but it wasn’t as good. In general I found the Thai food to be too hot for my tastes. Even when I asked for no spice it was too hot. Also, they love to use cilantro in their dishes and I hate cilantro. So, I had to be careful what I ate. We ended up losing weight during our stay because when the weather is hot, we don’t feel like eating a lot. That, combined with the spicy food, made me eat less than usual.
Flights: We flew from Eastern US so the flight was VERY long. We had 30 hours of flight time. The longest leg (14 hours) from NY to Seoul, Korea was a beast. Korean Air had nice planes and unlimited movies on demand that helped ease our discomfort. From our door in Maine to the hotel lobby it took 48 hours. That was brutal! However, the trip was worth it and we loved our time in Thailand. The Thai people are gracious, humble and friendly. We would love to return to Thailand and visit the southern beaches next time.

Fantastic hotel tucked away in a quiet street but minutes walk to the lovely riverside and its wonderful restaurants and night-time ambience. Only 10 mins walk to night market also. Beautiful hotel with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Very quiet and peaceful. Comfortable rooms. Lovely garden and pool area. Our stay here was just too short. Next time we come to Chiang Mai we definitely will stay at Puripunn again.

The staff at Puripunn were so kind--the kindest people I have ever met. It was such a memorable birthday staying there. The bed linens so soft and the beds so comfortable you just crash. We had fresh native fruit in the room every day. We were so pampered by all the staff at this hotel. The whole atmosphere so relaxing with nature, but close enough to walk around the city and streets along the river. We are use to 5-star hotels and this one is truly one of our favorite.
