If you are in Chiang Mai and want to spend a day with elephants, this is the place to go. When I was reading reviews before our vacation, I was concerned by the reviews that said there was a lot of waiting around doing nothing and that the videos were just glorifying the owner. I was also concerned by the reviews of people who loved ENP, but were also writing about how the videos taught how horrible riding elephants is. For anyone in a similar situation, I would like to put your mind at ease. We were picked up at our hotel by a small van, watched a video about the park on the ride, fed the elephants when we arrived, walked around the grounds to see the elephants in the open spaces, came back for lunch, watched another video, washed the elephants in the river, walked around the grounds again to watch the elephants bathe themselves and feed, and then were taken back to our hotel. It was a very full and enjoyable day with minimal waiting. Also, the videos were actually shows that were created for and shown on Animal Planet and National Geographic channels, not videos created by the park. I think it is everyone's own personal moral decision about whether or not they want to ride elephants, but the message I got is that elephant tourism is actually an important part of preserving the species, as there are not many wild elephants left in Thailand. You just want to make sure the elephants are being treated well and kept in appropriate surroundings. We had a fantastic day.
Based on reviews and my discussions with other travelers, Patara Elephant Farm also seems to be a good choice for a day with elephants, and does include riding.
