We had 4 nights at the Bann Tazala boutique hotel as part of our honeymoon this year. We hadn't realised it was out of town but turns out this made no negative impact on our stay at all as lifts into town can be arranged at the drop of a hat. The hotel staff were friendly and exceedingly helpful, even by Thailand's high standards. The rooms were huge (we switched rooms half way through because of a fault with our TV) and comfortable. The hotel has only a handful of rooms, all accessed from the open air after passing through the courtyard/ pool area. Both rooms were equipped with 50 inch plasma screens and DVD players and we had a couple of nights in with the latest DVDs and a takeaway from the night market. The hotel really felt like a home from home. Maybe it's because we went off peak and there was nobody else there, but the hotel provided full room service at no extra cost, including reheating our night market takeaway and serving it up to us in our room!! Absolutely wonderful. In terms of luxury and grandeur, it doesn't look a patch on the Mandarin hotel opposite but for service and intimacy I'd pick the Bann Tazala any day. A perfect place for a relaxed and intimate honeymoon.
Also thoroughly recommend the Khao Hom cookery school which can be arranged through the Bann Tazala. The food is great, classes easy to follow, teacher has excellent English. They pick you up and drop you off afterwards and the cookery school itself is located on the outskirts of Chiang Mai in a gorgeously green and leafy garden. Loved it so much we went twice! [--]
