“Good Value in Chiang Mai”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

I have stayed here several times, most recently in late March / early April 2012. OK the rooms are getting a little tired (strangely they have recently re-carpeted some of them without even re-painting the walls) and the bathrooms have seen better days, but for 690 B in this location you can't really complain. It's near the Tapae Gate, but down a soi off the main road, so it doesn't suffer from road noise (get a room at the front, overlooking the temple). There are loads of restaurants / cafes nearby. Most of the staff were very helpful. Free wifi in the rooms.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel overlook the temple.

Not worth 850 baht a night. The shower was crap, bed was lumpy and springy. Aircon too noisy.
They only good thing was the cable tv with some english channels and staff was friendly.

Well located cheap rooms which are overwhelmingly musty smelling.
$23 a night for double, air conditioned, aging rooms, we nearly checked out because of musty smell. Nice foyer & restaurant with terrace. American breakfast special $2. Next to temple in quiet location in central Chiang Mai. Hiso Star massage attached to the hotel has very pushy manager, massages not cheap and not recommended. Great location for the November Chiang Mai Lantern Festival

Room Tip: Check the room before you book. The musty smell may overpower you. Seemed to improve after running t...

Place is a little old but more than adequate for a place to rest after a day's activities. Was given a room on the 4th floor with a view of Wat Bupparam which made me feel very at ease. Bed was large and comfortable enough but pillows were a little thin and soft. Good selection of TV channels to choose from. Bathtub looked clean enough though I used only the shower. Girlfriend seemed happy with the bathtub though.

Inhouse massage available though I did not try.

Bonus came in the form of a small refrigerator to keep drinks in - only problem was the lack of convenience stores nearby. Simple solution: just buy them from where you are coming back from or along the way back. 3 mins by tuk tuk to the Night Market for 60 baht for 2 people.

Staff were very friendly and would do their best to help you. Counter staff were fluent enough in english to make a difference.

Only disappointment was that the restaurant closes at 10pm, which means no room service after then.

Two things which stood out for me:
1. No wifi though you can purchase wireless access for 100 baht a day. Speed was quite fast.
2. Abt 15 mins by taxi to and from airport. Hotel can call a taxi for you to the airport - taxi fare was 150 baht.
3. Staff was friendly

Would I recommend this hotel? Absolutely.

Room Tip: Take a room on the higher floors facing the temple i.e. facing out the hotel entrance. Doors can be...

C'mon, guys.

Sure, the hotel is a bit shabby. But for B500 per night, this hotel is exactly what I'm looking for when I travel.

I stayed at the Lotus Hotel Pang Suan Kaew for two nights, and was expected to pay more for daily internet access than my entire room costs at the Tapae Place. (Oh, and internet here is a dirt cheap B500 for an entire month!)

The location is perfect -- right on Thapae Road, and a few minutes' walk to the Night Market. The rooms are quiet, and the TV actually gets a few stations in English -- CNN, Australian Channel, FOX, Al Jazeera and a few others.

The front desk clerk and bell boy were very helpful and friendly. They took time to address my kids like real people, not nuisances, and gave me an extra bed for my daughter, charging only a few baht per night.

Our rooms are plenty big, and the a/c works well. My room overlooks an ancient wat; the view is quite nice. I'd say that the overall quality is equivalent to a Red Roof Inn in the States. Nothing fancy, but we're saving a ton of dough. My kids don't mind at all.

If you're on a budget, you really ought to give this place a chance. It's most certainly not the flea farm some reviewers would have you envision.

We booked in for 2 weeks at the end of January 2011, only rooms available were "de- luxe" but were not de-luxe at all but very basic, dirty and really shabby. Wallpaper peeling off the dirty walls, and carpet was filthy and covered in burns. The bathroom wasn't cleaned properly at all during our stay. Woken early every morning by noisy staff outside our room and banging doors. Would not recomend this hotel to anyone and would not stay here again. The only reason we didn't move hotels was that we had travelled around a lot and couldn't face any more packing and un packing!!!!
