We stayed here for 4 nights from 24/12/2007. Great place for families, we paid 600 Baht for aircon room booked on the internet. Its located about a 50 Baht Tuk Tuk ride from the night market which is a must to see, great food and great shopping.
Day trips, Golden Triangle trip is a very long day but was good, we went to Laos, Burmese border and long neck tribe village, this trip would be better done over two days. We did one hiltribe, Elephant Riding, Ox Cart, Rafting Trip this was a very touristy, lots of people feeding elephants that were obviously distressed, people selling you things even in the middle of the river while rafting. We also went to the Elephant Nature Park this is a great place completely different from the other places. The elephants here are being protected against the tourist trade and the abuse against them by their Mahouts (owners/Carers). This place is the real deal no rides or shows just elephants roaming with their family groups, you do get to get in the river with them and wash them. If you want to visit this place you must book early and you can do it on the internet. This place is a must see.
If you want to have a good look around Chaing Mai hire a Tuk Tuk for the day about 40/50 Baht per hour and you can go any where.

We stayed at the Mountainview for several nights in June 2007. We received a fairly large room with two single beds. The bathroom is one we typically saw in Thailand with openings in the wall to the outside. The a/c worked fine and for the price the room was okay. Just refer to the picture. The restaurant serves pretty good food.

As a final note, I notice that many indicate that the place has a excellent location inside the city walls (very close to the northern gate). Although this is true, it is still a walk to the eastern gate, where many of the stores, cafes, etc are located.

If you're looking for a small, cozy Guest House that's a 10 minute walk from the Sunday night market, then Mountain View is just for you. Not only is the staff very friendly and welcoming at all times, the restaurant on the premises is amazingly good and so inexpensive.
The rooms, too, are comfortable with excellent AC and very cheap. Maybe best of all, though, there's a Jazz Co-op just a half a block away. Went there on 3 consecutive nights for the live funky riffs. Layed back crowd---reminded me of a Greenwhich Village club. Great added bonus!

We stayed at the Mountainview for five nights in January 2007.

This guesthouse is a little oasis in Chiang Mai. The owner, Miss Dang is very accommodating and helpful. She knows the area well and is willing to share information and help with the language. She has contact info for a wide variety of activities and will make the reservations for you. The man who works in the evening, I think his name is Audi, is charming and sweet. A welcome sight for tired eyes after arriving late. He is there in the morning, too, with a cheerful smile and greeting.

The guesthouse is tastefully and simply decorated. There are a couple buildings, all of teak. Our room was in the main building, and we heard that the rooms in the back building are incredible wonderful and charming. In between the two buildings is a beautiful garden with tropical plants and some fountains. There are picnic tables where food is served. The restaurant is FABULOUS. You must, must, must have the pancakes. They are delish! Best in the world! Seriously. I'm not kidding. I may go back just for those. There is a small, inexpensive internet cafe off the main lobby. The guesthouse offers cheap, fast and good laundry service, which is a welcome service after days of being stinky.

We reserved a fan room for 300 Thai Baht. The room was very basic, but incredibly clean and perfectly functional for our needs. It had its own bathroom with hot water. The shower is typical and there is no shower stall, but I must say, it's quite fun taking a shower and getting everything wet and having it be okay! After the initial surprise, you get quite used to it and can have some fun with it. The room came with two twin beds (as all single fan rooms do), but if you are a couple and are small, you can fit comfortably in one of the beds as they are slightly larger than standard size twin beds (at least, by American standards, I don't know for other countries).

The location is great. It's located inside the walled part of the city, directly across from the northern gate. A short walk to Tha Pae and the night market. Wonderful! Songthaews go by it all the time, too, so there's no problem with it.

I highly recommend this place and we intend to stay there on our next trip to Chiang Mai.
