My partner and I stayed at Libra just over a year ago, and did a 2 day trek led by Toto (and we were joined by Best). We chose Libra after having been in town for about a week so we'd had a chance to talk with quite a few people about their experiences and recommendations. With a sign every twenty feet advertising treks it was a bit overwhelming trying to decide which to choose!
Our experience on the trek was great. Toto was a fun guide who we talked with all day about the area, Thai culture, his family, etc. The trek was physically difficult, lots of hills and it started with a bit of a downpour for the first 45 minutes, but SO worth the sweat. However, I'll warn you that if you aren't in shape you'll be doing some huffing and puffing...
We had a blast the second day riding elephants, bamboo rafting, then whitewater rafting. Unfortunately, my partner left her shoes under the place we slept in and we didn't realize until we were downstream... This is where Toto exceeded expectations. We were continuing on to Laos and then S. Thailand the day after the trek. Toto offered to get the shoes and mail them to the guesthouse we'd be staying at in BKK. The day we arrived in Bangkok a package had arrived for us. Her shoes, which had been covered in a wet day's worth of sticky mud had been cleaned and looked brand new... We certainly only gave Toto enough baht to cover the postage, and he could have just pocketed it knowing we'd be unlikely to return, but instead he hooked us up.
Our stay at Libra was pleasant, the room was clean and comfortable and all the staff was wonderful to us. We'll definitely return to Chiang Mai in the future, and Libra will be our go-to place. A friend flies to Thailand this week and she's headed there on our recommendation.
Finally, to the person who said Toto has to go in an earlier review... I'm sorry that you didn't have a good experience, but after spending the last year abroad observing the attitudes and behavior of many travelers my guess is that the issue might have had more to do with you than Toto. Call me crazy but I've found that if you treat people like people instead of objects sometimes everyone has a better experience.
