“Lovely pool great price but beds are so uncomfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

Great price for a central hotel with a pool. Very clean and staff were great, they threw a big group of very drunk very loud drunk people out in the middle of the night which was great and were very apologetic. Food at restaurant was also lovely but the beds were rock hard and impossible to sleep in which ruined the whole experience

A room with a double bed and en suite bathroom cost just under $20/night at Lai Thai. For that low price, Lai Thai is a great value. Lai Thai has a restaurant, a pool, offers laundry service, and provides booking services for activities in Chiang Mai.

I was initially put off by the rooms, which are made up of dark wood and seem a bit dated. However, the place seemed clean, and that's all I truly care about. The rooms are made up daily by the cleaning staff, providing fresh linens and towels. The bathroom, like most places at the same price level in SE Asia, does not have a bathtub/enclosed shower area that's separate from the rest of the bathroom. That means water from the shower gets all over the bathroom, which is annoying.

My first night there I noticed that my air conditioner did not work. After a not so restful night, I spoke to the staff in the morning and they fixed it within minutes; it worked well for the rest of the 3-4 nights that I spent at Lai Thai. However, I could not adjust the air conditioner at all--the panel was broken, and only somebody with a screw driver could change the temperature, etc. This isn't the case in all of the rooms, though. My friend was across the hallway from me, and his air conditioner panel worked just fine and, actually, seemed more modern than mine. This suggests that the rooms are not standard across the guesthouse, even at the same price.

The location is convenient and walking distance to the sights of Chian Mai, but it's not very picturesque. It's off of main road, with no real sidewalk fronting the street, and is right next to what appeared to be an auto mechanic. Noise from the street wasn't a problem, though, because the rooms are separated from the street by the restaurant and pool.

All in all, Lai Thai was functional and clean--it was totally fine for a place to lay my head at night.

The location is nice, directly to the old city wall. Staff was nice and help you with your trips in Chiang Mai. Rooms were ok, shower was nice, great beds. Little bit dirty but they bring clean towels every day. Pool was great, excellent for cooling down after à long day! Good price.

This guesthouse is right on the moat. It's a great location, if that is what you are looking for. The staff is friendly, and the service was good.
The room was adequate, and comfortable.
That said, the majority of the people I encountered were drunken westerners (and their lady entourage). Most were great people, and easy to get along with. And the staff was very accommodating. Everyone speaks good English, so don't expect to learn much Thai.

I was looking for something a little more traditional Thai, and ended up on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, where I was much happier.

It would have been a nice guesthouse, but on the last day my money was stolen. I left 3000 THB in the hotel room, which I know was not very smart, but still. We always left the keys at the reception so the chance anyone else but us and the staff could access the room is very little. All I got for help when I told them was the advice to go to the police. Well, and they offered me I could watch the surveillance video for about seven hours so I could figure out if anyone else entered the room. We were supposed to leave the next day at 8, tickets were bought, and I found out quite late in the evening, so no point in doing any of that.
3000 baht is quite a lot. And I do understand that they can't just give everyone who tells a story like that the money they ask for, but they didn't seem concerned whatsoever and the lady at the reception even started "[--]".
I left being really angry.
So, if you go there, basically don't leave anything in the room and don't expect any help from the staff when there is a real problem.
I was very disappointed.

Lai-Thai Guest House is located at a very convenient location along Chiang Mai's major roadway. It is within walking distance to a major night market area. The rooms are basic but clean and very affordable. The swimming pool area is nice and relaxing, too. The breakfast (eggs, toast, lassi) is delicious and is served quickly at a very nice price, too. The staff were fairly friendly, and I always returned to a 'freshened up' room at the end of the day. High recommended!

The rooms are decent and worth the price. However, the beds were hard as a rock. I know this is not a 5-star, etc, but it was a bit unbearable (and I'm an avid camper) The location is great, however, just a 1 minute walk across the street to the walled city. The hotel also offers to arrange any tours, etc you would like. We only spent 1 night and move on.
