“Great location, but that's about all.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2009

This is an absolute no frills hotel. The location is great, just inside the old city wall. The hotel looks good from the outside. I was very disappointed when I got to the room. The room was run down and dated. The sheet wasn't clean. The bedcover was very old and battered. The room and decor wasn't like what shown on their website.

Drove into Chiangmai from Sukhothai without a hotel reservation. Entering the Old City, we noticed a large sign advertising rooms for B799, so decided to check it out. We were waved into a parking space by a uniformed attendant and asked to see a room. Rooms were simple, but fine. King bed with a comfortable mattress (not rock hard like so many Thai hotels), satellite tv, a/c and fan, fridge and bathroom with shower, were all there. Nothing fancy, but perfectly acceptable, especially at the price. No safe in the room, but safety deposit boxes are available at the front desk. Stayed for 4 nights, using the hotel as a base for exploring the area. The hotel has a restaurant with good food, both Thai and Western, and breakfast for two is included with the room. Prices of the food were reasonable, and evenings there was live music at the outside bar. The location by the Thapae Gate is great, and made it easy to find our way back after day trips in the surrounding countryside. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Chiangmai.

I have stayed at the Montri several times a year, every year, since 1996 and consider it almost a second home, with friendly staff who really care. It really is a good place to stay. Rooms are fairly basic and functional, but comfortable with good beds (do you really need more for a good sleep or other "activities"?!!!) Forget all the fancy hotels (and many not so fancy) that charge stupid money for WiFi and minibar drinks - rooms have WiFi at no extra charge and a beer from the minibar is 50 baht!!! The hotel is in a great great location and has a good restaurant. They now have a car park out front so the previous parking problems are no more. Long may the Montri continue as it is, quite simply one of the best hotels in Chiang Mai.

As you will find with many of the reviewers here, what's not to like for the budget traveler? The Montri Hotel is a conveniently located budget hotel in the old city of Chiang Mai. The value argument is a strong one. Very small, simple, but clean rooms, that include wireless internet access and located at one of the main gates to the old city and just at the tail end (or beginning, depending on where you start) of the old city night market. Across the street is a popular, if crowded, breakfast and lunch eatery where we ate almost every day. Also across the street is a basic pharmacy and a convenient store.

If Buddhist Wats (temples) are your idea of fun, then just start walking from the hotel down the main street through old town and you can hit Wat after Wat after Wat. The narrow alley way behind the hotel leads to a great cheap hole in the wall restaurant where they serve excellent grilled fish. We ate there several times.

We really couldn't find anything to complain about with this hotel, but again this is for the budget minded. If you are looking for something upscale with more amenities and luxurious features, you are in the wrong place. If you want a cheap, well-located hotel in the old city then you have come to the right place.

The Montri has everything a reasonable budget tourist would want: great location, inexpensive, friendly staff. The hotel is a haven in the midst of sometimes hectic Chiang Mai. Right now the rate is 799 Baht (off season special) and this includes free wireless, free breakfast and a shuttle to the airport. The restaurant is excellent and serves a wide selection of meals and includes and outdoor area where most nights you can hear live music. Bottom line is I love this place. I am a basic budget traveller and like a clean, reasonably priced hotel, and the Montri is the standard against which all other budget hotels are measured. The hotel is due for an update this spring/summer, during which they will renovate the rooms, add a pool and a health club. I am told, though, they still intend to keep it reasonably priced.

Though not just exactly perfect, we were very pleased with what we got for the price we paid. The bed was comfortable, the room clean, the location *excellent*, the WiFi good. What's not just exactly perfect was the condition of the bathroom. But for the price, it's hard to complain. If I were paying $40 US or more, I'd complain, but not paying well under $30.

The hotel is in an excellent location. An easy stroll away from nightlife, markets restaurants. The food at the hotel was great.

The room came with free wifi which was excellent quality and was indeed broadband.

The room itself was pretty ordinary though. THe aircond struggled. There were water leaks onto the toilet/bathroom floor. I'd say the room I stayed in could do with a much better shower/bathroom...but hey, at 900 baht per night you can't expect 5 star.
