We were very happy with the service we received from the folks at Gap's House! We arrived in Chiang Mai looking for a 2-3 day trek and a place to stay. I heard about them online and just made one call. They organized the whole trek for us, picked us up at our hotel and we had a ball! They also provided us with smaller backpacks to take with us on the trek and allowed us to store our larger packs in their store room. When we finished our trek, we arrived back at Gap's house to a large room with a hot shower. The trek they offered us was 1700Bhat (about $54 CAN) for two nights, three days. Acccomodations, bamboo rafting, elephant riding, admission to Doi Intinaon (spelling?) National park ...all amazing! Best deal ever but remember to tip your guides if they are good...these people work for their money!
The hotel is very lush and welcoming. The restaruant is overlooking the courtyard and serves a vegetarian buffet every evening. Didn't get a chance to try the food here but they also operate a cooking school right on the premisis so I would expect it to be good. Also, pretty secure place...gate gets closed during the night and they have a staff member who patrols the courtyard throughout the night. Would stay here again!

I stayed here with my boyfriend for 6 nights off and on while we traveled around the North of Thailand... always found our way back to the Gap House! It was a wonderful place to stay, very clean, friendly and helpful staff and cute dogs too! Our room was a good size; air con worked fabulously and we were given clean towels everyday which was a nice touch for a budget accommodation. The vibe is very relaxed with antiques everywhere which made it very cozy. Breakfast was included in the cost, not a lot of selection but a nice way to start the day. It's on a quite street and a tuk tuk away from the night market and other sights. Per night it was 600baht for the larger room which was definitely worth it.

We also did our cooking class through them (they own a cooking school as well) which was great!

I highly recommend this guesthouse, one of the best places we stayed at while backpacking around Thailand.

  • Liked — The room was full of character - felt like you were in a real Thai home.
  • Disliked — lots of mosquitos because of all the plants and trees on the property.

we first stayed at another address in Chiang Mai but weren't happy at all so we decided to move. We read about Gap's house in the Lonely Planet so we decided to take a look. They were very friendly and the rooms (apartments) really looked lovely!! Very big and very clean! The only 'problem' was we couldn't make a reservation. But eventually we got a room after all and we stayed 3 days. We just loved it. The breakfast was very good and most important close to everything.....nearby the Thapae Gate. So I would surely recommend it to everyone!

Gap's House was a nice little guesthouse in a great location in Chiang Mai. If you're going to be there on a Sunday, be sure to check out the nearby Sunday market. Walking distance to the Night Bazaar. The free breakfast was quite good, choice of egg style, plus fresh pineapple, toast with marmalade and coffee or tea. The owner/manager spoke good English, although he wasn't overly friendly. There is daily maid service, unusual for this price range. The rooms were big and quite nice with little porches for reading. Our only complaint was that the lush gardens proved to be a mosquito haven, although that may have been related to the season. While there for three nights, I got 14 bites, while using DEET repellant and a mosquito net every night (that said, my husband used little repellant and only got one bite). They could have benefited from mosquito coils at every rooms, which was provided at other guesthouses in Thailand. Overall, I would recommend this to a friend, particularly if they are not as prone to mosquito bites as I seemed to be.

My husband and I stayed here for several days last July. What a wonderful base to discover the city! The hotel organizes hikes (we went on the single day hill tribe trek), and cooking courses (a great and entertaining way to spend a day). The location is perfect too if all you want is to explore the city on foot (we would highly recommend the Roof-Top Bar just over the bridge and to the right of the gate walking from the hotel).

The rooms are great and full of antiques. Ours was a bit musty but who can complain for $20 a night?!? The owner was really friendly and kept security tight which was very comforting too.

All and all, one of the best 'bang for you buck' places we stayed at in Thailand.
