Stayed here for 3 nights. I hadn't been there for 7 or 8 years, but the staff remembered me. I love the open-air restaurant, right on the river. They've added a Japanese chef and a full menu of Japanese food, in addition to Western and Thai. The room was comfortable and spacious, and a bargain. There's no pressure to buy tours or other services, but the staff is happy to help if you need something. We rented a motorbike and booked a river trip through them.

We ended up staying at the Galare for over a week and grew fonder and fonder of it! It is great value - you get good sized, clean rooms with lovely helpful staff, a peaceful setting despite being in the centre of Chaing mai next to the river and the fantastic night market.

Food isn't great and it closes early - not great if you are staying in with a little child... but you are surrounded by great restaurants just minutes away.

Staff really helpful to organise trips - incredibly patient and understanding to our requirements with a 3 year old. Played with our little boy / rounded him up when he took off for a run!! Beautiful wooden buildings and peaceful gardens and the river is gorgeous to over look.

After reading the reviews, we were little skeptical, but then it turned out to be good. Staff was co-operative and spoke English. As mentioned in an earlier review, the bathroom window needs more reenforcements. Rooms were pretty decent and well maintained.
Restaurant was just ok (there were better breakfast and lunch available within 10mins of walk). For the price we paid, this guest house was better than expected. I would definitely go back. Nice location and tour guide was helpful. Could rent a car from the front desk.

PS: Take your own towels though, we did not like the ones they gave.

Stayed there for 3 nights. This is my 15th visit to CNX. Usually stayed at Raming Lodge and Amora Thape
Against
1)For the price we paid, we could have stay in better accommodation!
2)Room is pretty small with basic ammenities.
3)Hot water in the bathroom is not hot enough, especially during December month.
4)Not reccomended for elderly people as there is no lift - you have to carry your luggage up the stairs as there is no porter services.
5)Very noisy at night as there are night clubs across the river
6)Breakfast not included in the package
7)Poor quality bath towels
For
1)Wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the morning
2)Very close to night markets and mosque
3)Very close to muslim eateries at Ban Haw
4)Clean and private place

Will not stay here again

This guest house was recommended by someone who had stayed there before. I took a chance and headed straight there without making a reservation. The taxi driver at the bus station was quite familiar with the place and took me straight there. Fortunately they were not booked out. At first I thought it was pricey.......comparatively speaking.... but in the end I thought it was worth it. There is internet service albeit slow, a restaurant on location, tour desk, transportation service, a/c room with own bathroom to include fridge; it was worth it. I could have done worse. I look at it as paying for the convenience. They were able to arrange last minute tours and I was picked up from the Guest House I didnt have to go anywhere to meet tour buses. From the restaurant, you had a peaceful view of the river while you ate. The restaurant prices were more than reasonable. I was able to charge everything except the restaurant to my room and then use my CREDIT CARD to pay for it, including the bus trip back to Bangkok. Credit cards seem to be RARELY used in SE Asia.

The room was ok for one person. Furniture was sparse but it was airconditioned, there was hot water and the bathroom was spacious enough. I didnt cringe when I entered the room so I can recommend it it to those persons who are looking for budget accommodations in Chiang Mai.

  • Liked — The ease with which the staff facilitated me. It was a pleasant surprise.
  • Disliked — Location. Yes, it was by the river and near the night market, but I didnt like walking down the lane alone at night
