Ruen Tamarind is relatively fine dinning in Chiang Mai I suppose. While the price may be on the high end for this town, the quality definitely makes up for it. It is not to be compared with your cheap delicious one-wok back ally restaurant, it is not the average boring bland motdified-for-foreign-guest-but-still-MSG-filled hotel kitchen either. It is refined but not pretentious, flavour-packed but not intimidating for international palates. The portions are more than decent and the atmosphere great, settling by the pool within old monastery looking walls under well established greenery.
We had eaten all but one meals here during our 4 day visit to Chiang Mai. We had a little baby and this makes the most relaxing place for us: stroller accessible, quiet, lots of shade, on top of the good flavones there is no danger of food poisoning. We did venture out once (the praised Red Chilly just across the road) and decided it wasnt worth the effort. The pork sausage dish was so good I kept going back to again and again.
