The Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai is a very nice hotel, We stayed on the 14th floor. This gives you great views of the city. It is also right next to the night markets. Room service is very good, they didn't take too long to give us our meals. The staff were quite friendly.

Good bones, but needs a lot of attention. Generally not clean in the rooms and things worn or not working. Very good food. Good service, but got a little "soon come mon" runaround. I had a problem that took 24 hours to resolve. Lots of promises, then I personally sought out the person who could fix it and it had not been reported to him. He fixed it in about 5 minutes. Beautiful pool area and very friendly people. I was here for a conference and did not pick the hotel. The rate was less than $40 per night. On the upside it was a lot better than ANY stateside hotel for $40 but on the downside, I got what I paid for. Very good conference facilities.

Rooms we were given where single beds in a small motel size room , smelt heavily of smoke one even had the ashtray still in there they were supposed to be non smoking rooms. The bathrooms had mould growing in them. When we asked to be changed to what we had ordered, we were told they had a conference on and that was all they had. Staff unhelpful. Would not recommend this hotel, there are a lot better hotels for the same money. This is the first day I dread to think what breakfast is going to be like. We booked this trip 3 months ago.

Room Tip: Go else where

Dear Stuart
How nice of you to take your time to post here on trip advisor and thank you for staying with us during your stay here in Chiang Mai. We do apologize that you have not been given the rooms with a double bed and that the staff were unhelpful. The hotel tries to accommodate all the requirements of the guests, however at times it is just impossible.

We stayed for 4 nights at the Imperial Mae Ping in April 2013. Check-in was quick and we were soon whisked up to the room on the 8th floor. Good view over Chiang Mai and a lovely room. Breakfast was busy but with plenty of food and a good selection. There are two pools, a family one and a quiet one on the 2nd floor. The hotel is in a good location for the night market and the bar street. Overall we would recoment it and stay again.

Room Tip: High floor rooms have good views over the city.

We stayed here on our honeymoon back in 2008, in a royal suite....and then again in a junior suite (room 1234), and it was just a good as the upgraded royal suit rooms.
This year we were in a suite (1518) and the quality of the room is still high.
The 15th floor has a nice executive area if required.
Everything about this hotel was great.
My biggest complaints for these big hotels is the wifi availability. Normally this is not supplied and is charged separately, however this time we were supplied with access to their in hotel wifi (not sure if it was included in the suite price), but the wifi speed was always good.
Had a friend stay on the 10th floor and he also got wifi access.
The bed was soft (as opposed to the normal plank of wood covered by a 1 inch piece of foam, bedding you normally find in Asian rooms).
We had a seperate living area to the bedroom.
Breakfast was excellent. As the hotel is normally really busy during songkran it can be difficult to get a table, but sharing with other travellers seems to be encouraged.
The hotel is in a great location as well.

Room Tip: I have now stayed in 3 of the room types available and if you can afford the extra for a suites, the...

Dear Abundy
It was a pleasure reading your comments here on Trip Advisor and thank you for taking the time and for your stay with us. Nice to have return guests and especially those who have spent their honeymoon in our hotel. Wifi is free of charge to all our guests in the entire hotel (rooms and public areas). Our beds conform to international hotel standards and offer a comfortable sleep. We do look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel next year, perhaps during Songkran again.
Kind regards Peter Schnyder and The Imperial Mae Ping Team

Quite a tall building in a lovely garden setting, not quite what I was expecting in Chiang Mai.
We were on the 9th floor overlooking the pools - quite a large room with a smaller side room with a single bed for our daughter.
A large conference of teachers was on at the hotel so breakfast was a very crowded - difficult to get a table and the staff seemed quite un interested in clearing tables or helping in any way.
The concierge was very helpful in assisting us to hire a driver and car for the day at a very reasonable price - 1900 Baht for 8 hours. We visited the ancient temple in the old city - Wat Chedi Luang, 3 Kings monument, Tiger Kingdom, an umbrella factory, 'Boat' for lunch and then to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.
The pool area was quiet and clean but not much poolside choices for food and drinks. The small massage/beauty salon by the pool area facing the road was good value and so were the laundry/ convenience stores that were close by.
Go to French restaurant Le Bistrot for dinner about a 10 minute walk from the hotel as the chef was lovely and the food great.

Our stay at the Mai Ping was part of a 5 day travel package with Thai Air to Chiang Mai so I was a little nervous of what to expect after some negative reviews about the hotel. Normally make our own bookings but this was such a good package deal with hotel and flights that we went ahead with the booking hoping for the best with the hotel.
First impression was of a very tired hotel in need of a refurbishment but have to say after 5 days we really enjoyed returning here each day. Location wise the Mai Ping is so central and an easy walk to the night markets, restaurants, bars and a new shopping centre has just opened up the road but we only found that out the day we were leaving.
The staff we encountered at the front desk were helpful but the normal Thai friendliness we so much love was missing from the restaurant staff. I was guessing this was in part due to the high turnover of people coming through for short stays on the many tourist buses that seemed to arrive then be gone.
Due to our cheap booking, our room was only the normal standard room on the 6th floor and was certainly due for an upgrade, furniture and the carpet all in need of some care but we were very comfortable, the bed firm but not too hard and our bathroom okay but friends said there bathroom certainly needed work doing on the grouting in the bathroom. Our cleaning lady was a particularly lovely young lady but our friends had problems with their room being cleaned adequately and getting replacement towels so guess it’s a lottery.
Breakfast was pretty good, out of 5 days we only had one day that we would have said things could have improved but the rest were good with a varied selection of Asian and European food available plus the normal egg stations , a coffee station and another lady making these little rice type cakes which were very tasty. Good selection of fruit and salad as well so happy with that part of our stay. There was a particularly delicious fried fish on a couple of days, could have eaten that every day. With the tour buses can get very hectic early on so we found around 9am to be much quieter and easy to get a table.
The pool is really good, quite large and plenty of sunbeds and good shade available if you wanted it. There is a second smaller pool up on the 2nd level and it looked nice as well but not many sunbeds there. Had meals beside the pool and the food was excellent. Did have room service a couple of times, the first time the food was hot but the second time food a little cool but taste wise was fine.
A great laundry is located just across the road, 39baht a kilo for the best ever washing and ironing, clothes smelt so nice and such a friendly lady, she remembered our room number after our first visit.
I think the Imperial Mai Ping is one of those hotels that because of its very central location makes it worth accepting the hotels limitations but hoping if we return next year that some refurbishment has taken place as the Hotel could have so much going for it!!! Guess while the many tours keep coming and the Mai Ping being large enough to cater for them, there probably as far as the hotel is concerned not real rush to do the improvements but certainly some cheap deals going to stay at the hotel make it a great budget choice.
