“Great coffee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013 via mobile

Decent coffee, friendly owners. Don't go expecting to eat as its not trying to be a restaurant, but if you want really good coffee and a nice little garden area to sit and relax in the middle of the city.

“Small is beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

This is not a restaurant...but a coffee shop.It would be nice if Tripadvisor would separate the two,as regards the reviews. It was towards the end of out stay that we went to Ponganes Espresso, taking a tuk tuk.The driver missed soi 5,and we went up another soi and had to come back DOWN soi 5.From this route the coffee shop is hardly visible because of a 'tattoo' sign hides it.But not to be discouraged(and with Nancy Chandler's Map of Chiang Mai in our hands) we finally found it! Worth the outing!
This is a small establishment serving excellent coffee and nice people to whom you can have a chat (about coffee or anything else) At the side of the premises is a dainty well-looked after garden, several chairs and tables, prettily arranged with a spirit house and an ideal place to check you emails (free wifi) or read a book while enjoying the coffee. They do not have a kitchen,so the food is of the snack variety, cake etc.It is open till 6/6.30p.m.
We also bought a packet of their own blend to bring back with us,and my husband enjoyed talking coffee with the owner.
The coffee machine is all gleaming chrome.......the Harley Davidson of coffee machines and the preparation is meticulous! The owner spent several years in Australia honing his skills as a barista before starting up in Chiang Mai with his own business.
There are 3 wats nearby and interesting sois,so a nice little exploration of that area with a great coffee can pass a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of the main town.Go there! !
Enjoy the change from the big franchises and support a local venture!!

“great people making great coffee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Ponganes....the combination of two amazing people, Pong and Nes, won both my wife and I's heart. It is a small place, but one that is quality oriented. From the equipment to the beans and the whole process in between. After getting into a conversation with the two of them, something easily and naturally achieved, it is hard to see why anyone with a good heart and honest review would not want to support them. They word hard for the little they bring in, but consider their high-quality equipment as their children and choose to invest in the best they can given what they have.

On top of that, they make a consistently good coffee and latte art. Hope you will enjoy such a lovely and heart-warming experience as we have over our months in Chiang Mai...

And give 'em a break if they close early or open late....Come back and try again. It's worth it.

“Nice coffee and good conversation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

I've been there for artisan coffee testing. It's a tiny space hidden in the alley on Moon Muang Rd. Hot latte which beans are delivered from Praow - another district of Chiang Mai is mild.

I like their latte's flavour.

Some conversation with the owners was more impressive.

“Quality coffee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Pong's experience as a barista in Australia really shows. The coffee at Ponganes is lovingly made and shows an intimate knowledge of the whole process. Talking to Pong you can tell he is passionate about what he does.
Inside, the shop itself is small, with room for maybe 8 people to sit at any one time, but it is air conditioned and there is more seating outside. There is a nice vibe to the place.
65 baht gets you a regular sized flat white/latte/cappuccino and it is worth every penny.
I'm leaving town today, but not without going back for one more :)
