“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2012

I booked this place because I wanted to be in a quiet location away from the christmas festivities and it received good reviews. However, I was disappointed. Its also tough to write this review because the lady who manages the hotel is so helpful and friendly and really does goes the extra mile.

Good points include:-
1. Quiet location (which is what i wanted for Christmas)
2. Tasty and well priced breakfast (not included in room rate)
3. Very tasty food available at the resturant.
4. Lovely pool (although I didnt get the time to use it)
5. Clean room
6. One computer with internet access available in lobby.
7. No international calling facilities available. However, the hotel manager was very helpful and arranged for me to make a skype call, free of charge!
This is probably the main reason why i feel guilty about highlighting the following issues that need improvement:-
1. Rooms are older than the pics on hotels.com reflect and decor is a bit dated and uncoordinated.
2. The bed is hard but the pillows are much worse. Its like trying to snuggle up on a brick. I couldnt get comfy and needed a massage to help with the neck strain.
3. The bathroom is odd. The bath area is raised and has a shower curtain. Water drains towards the toilet and basin. Im not sure the water unit works well because the shower remained luke warm to somewhat cold.
4. No hair dryer in room. This wouldnt normally bother me but after a luke warm to cold shower -I started feeling sorry for myself and really wanted to dry my hair before bedtime.

I really do wish the best for this hotel and hope they will improve the facilities.

I stayed here for about a week in December - I had originally booked two days but ended up staying longer. The location is good, about 500 meters North of the moat. It is about 200 meters from the bus station if you need to take a bus out of town. The hotel is set back about 50 meters from the road.

Pros: very clean, beautiful pool area, good customer service. They have a nice garden cafe for breakfast or just sit with a drink. Since it is set back from the road it is very quiet. The front desk was very helpful, although English skills were hit or miss. But you could always make yourself understood. The manager lived in the US for a while and spoke very good English. They had a little computer room with free use of a computer for the guests.

Cons: The shower was raised a bit so the water had a tendency to get on the bathroom floor. It also had it's own little water heater, and while the water was hot enough for me, I think you had to wait a bit if you want really really hot water.

This is probably the nicest $30US hotel I have ever stayed in. Very simple but nice and clean. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool.

The Chang Phuak, or Peuk, or Puak (no-one seems quite sure how to spell it, even within the hotel!) is a great place to stay - quiet, tranquil, wonderful staff, good-sized rooms, beautiful garden setting, swimming pool, and away from the claustrophobic congestion of the old town - which takes only 10 minutes to reach on foot, but involves passing a great area of street food stalls. Not to mention the liveliest bar we found in town, the North Gate Jazz Club - go there for the jam session on Tuesday nights - awesome!

Located just outside the north gate of the old city and off the main road, the hotel is a quiet refuge about a 15 minute walk from the center of town. The open air lobby has an old world feel with dark wood and large furniture.....a very pleasant place to linger with a cup of coffee or a book on a rainy day. The hotel is well-maintained and spotlessly clean. The staff is smiling and friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. The owner hooked my friends up with a tailor to make some clothing and then drove them to the market so they could purchase fabric. Our room (a triple) was basic, but very clean and comfortable. There's a nice little cafe serving tasty Thai food (and American breakfast) and smoothies throughout the day and evening, all at very reasonable prices. The cook will make whatever you want if they have the ingredients on hand. They also serve beer and alcoholic beverages. There is free Internet service and laundry service as well. But the best part of all......that beautiful, sparkling pool!!! Surrounded by a lovely garden, the pool is a welcome and refreshing treat after a hot day in Chiang Mai!!! We booked our reservation on the Internet and paid about $40 a night for a triple, no breakfast included. I'd stay here again in a heart beat!

A totally relaxing retreat after exploring the city and undertaking many fun adventures in chiang Mai. The staff were so attentive as soon as returned to the beuatiful gardens and pool after a hot day I was offered "my usual" a tall glass of ice with an ice cold Singa!! The food was prepared however you liked it and breakfast was varied and you could also ask for extras. I don't recall any of the staff names but i called them all "smiley" as they were always smiling and obivously took great pride in their work, the grounds and rooms. Little extras like fresh orchids in the rooms each day. My TV broke down late one evening and the boys were very quick to replace it. thanks guys! :) the chaing mai garden cooking school was a highlight as were the night markets in the streets-lots of different stuff. There are local markets nearby north up chang puak road which offer a huge range of foods and worth the look just for the variety. June is a great time to be in Thailand as there are less visitors and the weather was just right. I would reccomend this location and hotel to anyone visiting Chang Mai on a budget as it provides excellent service, freindliness, cleanliness and peacefulness!! Thanks to the team at Chang Puak!! :)

Room Tip: book direct and mention it was reccomended

I booked this hotel as part of an Air Asia flights/lodging package. Before making the reservation, I looked for reviews of Changpuak Hotel. The harshest criticism I could find on any travel site was from one guest who mentioned that the pillows were too firm. Truly? Could no one find any greater fault?

Truly. I couldn't find any at all. I've traveled throughout SE Asia for a decade, and my experience has been that many hotelliers in Thailand are simply worn down from the constant (and often negative) flood of tourists. The owner and staff at Changpuak treat the guests and each other with great warmth and respect. When she learned that I was vegetarian, the owner returned from the morning market with sticky rice breakfast delights. When I asked the receptionist to call a taxi to take me to the airport, the owner stepped forward with her car keys. After years of keeping my eyes open for scams and fraud in Thailand, this sort of hospitality was almost hard to believe.

As another reviewer here said, the hotel is spotless. The garden cafe and the pool are fantastic oases, and someone at the hotel has a magical touch with orchids -- they are everywhere you look. The hotel's location has its pros and cons: It's about a 10-minute walk outside the walls of the old city. The benefit is peace and quiet -- you'll hear birds instead of traffic. If you want to be in the midst of the backpacker pub-guesthouse area, then Changpuak is not for you.

Amenities include free and fast WiFi and internet use, lovely breakfast, and that pool. That glorious pool!

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights after arriving in Chiang Mai. We were blown away at how clean and well kept it was. The lobby was spotless, the swimming pool sparkling and the rooms tidy. The staff were very friendly upon arrival and everyone from the front desk staff to the maitenance department were smiling and friendly. We met the hotel owner on our last day and he was genuinly appreciative that we chose to stay at his hotel. The complimentary breakfast was great although they do not serve any other food. The location of the hotel is OK, about a 10 minute walk to the old quarter. The beds were quite hard for us, but other than that everything was great.
