“Relaxing Veggie delight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Tea house was peaceful & serene with beautiful plants & comfortable seating (lounge pads). Per the other reviews-- it is a bit buggy, but shouldn't deter you as it's worth a visit.

We started with the Orchid Tea - pretty nice. And , we tried to order the vegetable dumplings & Papaya salad, but they were out.. Fail.

So, we ordered the Root Beet Salad, hash browns, spiced lentils & brown noodles with vegetables.

Beet salad was refreshing.
Hash browns were nice, but quite oily.
Spiced lentils were delicious with finely minced finger.
Brown noodles were awesome.

If we were to visit again I'd like to try the traditional tea ceremony & the veggie dumplings.

Overall, a tasty experience.

“Veggie nirvana in Chiang Mai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

We've just come back from a wonderful dinner at Tianzi this evening. We arrived late (9.25pm - it closes at 10pm) so had the place to ourselves. We sat outside, on the raised platform in the garden - underneath a roof supported by four sturdy posts. Drip drops of rain and dark verdant plants surrounding us as we sat at the low table and awaited our food. It felt like being in a film set for a Tranh Anh Hung or Wong Kar Wai film.

Tianzi is an excellent place to try unusual teas - we tried a 15 year old puerh tea from Yunnan province in China (supposed to have excellent health benefits). The food was a marvel - supremely tasty Thai soup, two huge blocks of tofu marinaded in a thick miso glaze, broccoli, carrots and mushrooms accompanied by a gorgeous paste made from tahini and miso. For dessert, we had gluten free pancakes seared with honey. We're planning to go back tomorrow.

If you are vegetarian/vegan, you owe it to yourselves to go to Tianzi if you're planning a trip to Chiang Mai.

“one of the best in town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

The food in Tianzi is delicious. Never a duff dish. I have been twice in one week and it really beats other places in Chiang Mai. It is definitely worth going out of your way to visit, and if you are going for a mooch round the night market it is nearby. Yes, the mossies are a pest, especially at the moment, but then it is wet season. But there are fans, and coils burning. Cover up well.

“Wholesome macrobiotic, vegan fare. Best dish: Seaweed salad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

We had a big group of 11 or 12 people, so we shared a lot of dishes family style: fried dumplings, lentils with brown rice & herbs, fried rice, mixed vegetables with tofu, mixed steamed vegetables with hummus, steamed leafy greens drizzled with miso sauce, noodles with peanut sauce, and other dishes I can't remember. The general consensus, however, was that the seaweed salad was, by far, the most outstanding offering from Tianzi.

The atmosphere is beautifully peaceful and the service is relaxed to match. We weren't in a hurry, so I didn't really notice how prompt the service was. What I can say is that the dishes seemed to arrive endlessly, so I never felt like we had to get their attention.

Because it is open-air seating, there can be mosquitos, but we were there in the wet season, when you should always have repellant at the ready anyway.

The family dog does wander around and come up to you while you eat, but I love animals, so it didn't bother me. The dog, however, did seem to have a sixth-sense and latched on to the one person in our group who was a cat person and not a dog person. She was not amused. YMMV.

“Great Food - many drawbacks”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

The food is great and the owners are wonderful. Its a damp, mosquito infested spot - conceivably charming, but zero care. The large glass windows have probably never been cleaned. The family dog chews his bone near your table. Light fixtures have dust from 5 years ago!

Such a pity. Superb macrobiotic food prepared in an enticing fashion. Owners are warm, friendly and happy to modify any dish to suit your taste...... needs care and some western love....
