“Above average guesthouse. Good but not outstanding.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2013

Good points:
- The location is good
- The bed is big, soft and comfortable
- The room is reasonably big and clean
- The area is pretty quiet
- The staff is friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. Do approach them to get discount for tours.
- The wifi is good
- The owner speaks good English and it is interesting to talk to him to learn more about Chiang Mai

Not so good points but we can live with it:
- Some drivers have problems locating the guesthouse
- Slightly pricey. For that price, the guesthouse can probably provide more freebies and better facilities (eg. like more hangers, bigger TV, free cakes, more varieties of fruits, some common PCs at the lobby, bikes etc)
- There is no elevator

Overall, it is a good experience staying at Yindee.

Really enjoyed our stay @ Yindee.
Staff were very helpful, rooms were clean and well furnished.

Only note I would say by way of advice to future travellers is that we paid a slight premium to stay in a Guesthouse like Yindee which was inside Chiang Mia old city. We found no advantage in that location, you can get excellent cheaper accommodation close by outside the walls.

Just to confirm Yindee was worth the premium, lovely guesthouse.

Yindee is more expensive than many of the places around it, but it's worth it. saying that, we stayed one night in one of their smaller rooms, and perhaps that wasn't (though we never saw any of the other local accommodation to compare). but if you're not a backpacker, not in your early twenties, and/or fancy something more comfortable but not necessarily a full blown hotel (with associated price), this place is perfect.

their larger rooms (where we stayed for several nights) are really spacious, clean and well-presented - you wouldn't ask for more from a pretty smart hotel: large, comfortable bed, ac (perhaps not the most powerful, but perfectly adequate), cable tv, a daybed and a lovely partially open-air bathroom. there were a few mosquitoes in the bathroom area, as you'd expect, and you want to make sure you close the door into the bedroom all the time, especially around dusk, but it's well worth it!

it's worth noting that it can be very noisy in that area at night, until about 2am, as there's a small area of loud bars and clubs close by. but, while you can hear it all loudly and frighteningly in the bathroom, when you go back inside the room it's barely audible and doesn't disturb (and i am not a heavy sleeper!)

the brothers-in-law who were running the place when we were there were lovely, helpful but unobtrusive, and one spoke very good English and was very interesting to talk to. i was sceptical about tours recommended by the guesthouse, but the one day trek was good, and the cookery course (asia scenic) was great. i think all the tours have deals with guest houses, so it probably makes no difference - just means that any kickbacks go to people you know instead of random 'agents' you walk past down the road.

at yindee, if you want your room to be cleaned, you leave your key in a basket downstairs; if not, don't leave it and you keep your privacy. there's a room downstairs where you can leave luggage after you've checked out, and there's also free tea, coffee and fruit, and tables and chairs where you can hang out and research your next move or eat street food you've bought nearby, as well as a mellifluous water feature. the free wifi is fast and the signal is fine, though better on lower floors.

Yindee's location is also probably hard to beat - it's in the old town, which seems like a more fun place to be than amongst the high rises outside, but very close to the main (Tha Pae) gate on the east side of the town, which heads out to the (Mae Ping) river and around which many things are based, including the night and other markets, which are all in walking distance. there are also various temples very nearby, which you stumble upon if you just go for a wander.

Room Tip: larger/more expensive rooms definitely worth it

The Yindee is a nice small to medium sized hotel. The rooms are a good size and are very clean. The facilities are basic(TV and that's your lot) but you don't come to Chiang Mai to sit in your room. The rooms have no safe but reception can put valuables in their safe. The location is great, short walk and your in the middle of it all.
Getting about- there are red pick style cars and tuk Tuk's everywhere. Use the red cars and pre arrange cost of where you want to go. We paid 400baht (£9ish) to go from the old town to the mountain temple and back. The driver waits for you while you take it in and our one stopped at picturesque spots on the way back.
Make sure you know exact address, taxi drivers at airport don't all know it!

I stayed at the end of low season, so was lucky to get the better price. In high season, the price goes up a couple hundred baht. This place felt relaxed and secure. It is down a driveway on a side lane. No noise at night, or crazy clubs, or anything. I saw lots of guest houses in the same area advertising low prices. I can only guess you might get a good one or you might get a creepy or noisy young crowd one. This place was clean, quiet and air-conditioned, attracting a less young crowd. The owner, I assume, was VERY chatty and answered short questions with lots of explanation. Just reporting, no judgement. You can walk almost anywhere from this spot and there are lots of nearby restaurants. There is free hot drinks in the lobby, refrigerators on the floors, and beverages for sale. They help people set-up trips and taxis and the like. If you are not on a low low budget and want a bit of economically priced comfort, I'd say this place works.
