“Clean, Friendly Staff & Nice Pool”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2014

I booked this place for a few days but this turned into two weeks, it's a great base if you are prepared to walk as the old city is around a 20 minute walk away but hiring a bicycle or scooter is a great way to see it all and you can do that cheaply.

Rooms and all very clean and big, i had the cheapest room and this had a balcony area and en suite, hot water, aircon (although i'd like to be able to control the aircon temperature easier) , nice pool and close to a big shopping centre which has some nice places to eat.

It's a nice escape from the bustle of a hotel on the main road or in the old city, only reason not 5 stars in rating is the location being a walk from the old city, but jumping on a red Songthaew (taxi/truck) is easy.

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms are located on the 1st floor and have balconies, from what I could tell the pricie...

The hotel is about 1,5km walk from the west gate on the old city. If you like walking you can reach most of interesting places (restaurants/spa etc) in less 30 mins. The hotel is very near to a main street were you can take a cheap bus (20-30 bath) to reach the old city. Generally the hotel looks good. The breakfast cost 90 bath but don't expect a free huge and tasty buffet. You can order just one main dish (like scrambled eggs with bacon bread butter and marmellate). The buffet have rice, noodles, salad and some juice. Nothing special. The room are really quite; looks brand new but are not for the cleaning maniacs. Just over my had I've a big spider web. I won't remove it cause its perfect vs. mosquitos, but really does not look good.

It's not as easy as some people might think to find a hotel in Chiang mai, which is clean & modern, with a pool & to be in a location which isn't isolated.
Within a 10 min walk are Kad Suan Kaew & the new Maya shopping centres, bustling Nimmahaemin road & many eateries. Songthaews (red covered pick up style taxi's) will take you into old town, night bazaar etc for 20bt.
Rooms are spacious & spotlessly clean with comfortable & not overly hard bed (not always the case in Thailand) large flat screen tv & decent hot shower. Tea & coffee making facilities are provided, along with a fridge & small table & 2 chairs.
We paid 900bt in high season for a deluxe. Breakfast is probably the weakest aspect, I tended to walk to Amazing Sandwich every morning. Food & drink bought from the small restaurant however were very good. Often at the swimming pool there would only be 1 or 2 people which was great, the only downside was the hotel doesn't serve alcohol. Late afternoon it's always nice to have a cold beer & watch the sun go behind Doi Suthep. Overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. As long as the pricing remains sensible, we'll be back next year!

Location: This place is a tad far from the old city action - you'll have to hop a tuk tuk or songthew and say "Brat-do-ta-pay" (Pratu Tha Phae, east gate of the old city) to get there. However, there's also a lot happening, including a ton of great restaurants, in the area if you're willing to explore a bit.

Hotel quality: Clean and well maintained, especially the deluxe rooms, which are nicely decorated. Wi-Fi and other mod cons work well. Great value.

Main issue: Every hotel key seems to fit every door! I accidentally opened another door (as well as the second room we had) with mine, and another guest barged into my room by mistake. I'd consider staying somewhere else until this issue is resolved.

But if you do stay here: Give the doggies at the laundry next door a hug for me.

Ignore the negativity surrounding location, there are plenty restaurants in the area and two shopping malls. If you want the tourist centre take a songathew for 20 baht. Clean rooms, helpful staff, fresh water each day and clean pool. Great!

I booked a top level room for my four week stay in Chiang Mai because they looked large and comfortable and affordable on a monthly rate and I needed somewhere quiet to work. Unfortunately, I didn't realise how far away the hotel is from the old town, and is just off a busy road with a few restaurants but no cafes or evening entertainment to relax. I freely admit it was my responsibility for the booking, but when I told the manage that I had made a mistake and asked it would be possible to have a refund of part of my stay she offered me 50% but then said she had to speak to the owner, who refused to make any refund at all. The manager was quite rude about my request. I was also put off by the almost continual noise from a jack-hammer on a construction site near the hotel.
You need to get a taxi or hire a bike to get in and out of the Old Town; there is nothing of any interest at all near the hotel; there is no lounge to relax in, the only place you can take a coffee is sat at a table in the restaurant.
I repeat, it was my mistake in registering here, and, on reflection, it probably wasn't wise to pay in advance, but the outright refusal of the owner to refund any money is a reflection of a very bad, mercenary management style. Even though I was on a limited budget, I left after three days because I couldn't face a month in such a boring place, when Chiang Mai has so much more to offer.

When reading these reviews, one must keep in mind the level of hotel being discussed. In off the street the price here was 600 baht a night (around $20.00 USD). Sakulchai Place is located down a quiet soi off Huay Kaew Road, about 5 blocks from the N.W. corner of the walled city center. There are lots of very inexpensive restaurants top choose from and an amazing lovely lady across the street who has a PHd in laundry. The hotel is very clean and the staff of typical Thai smiling charm. The upkeep of the hotel is constant and there is a decent sized pool. The rooms at the back are darker and cooler and perhaps more quiet. The planes will wake you in the morning. The included breakfast is optional (60 Baht), but if staying more than a couple of days is very monotonous.

Room Tip: In the basement at the back of Central Kad Suan Kaew, there is VERY CHEAP local food vending area w...
