“So Very Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Everything was perfect about this stay - and it's not often I say that. Booking was effiicient, queries I had made at booking time were followed up on the pre-booked transfer to the hotel, the room tour was comprehensive, everything was immaculate and even connecting the wifi was a breeze. U Chiang Mai discreet from the road but opens up into a lovely Lanna-designed space with airy public areas and rooms cleverly arranged around the infinity pool. I needed an early breakfast which arrived perfectly on time and I loved that it arrived in a tiffin! The staff could not have been more helpful, especially when I needed assistance with an activity pick up. I'd unhesitatingly stay here again, and might even contemplate upgrading to one of the rooms with a balcony straight onto the pool!

Room Tip: Don't forget to check out the reading room - a lovely space. It might tempt you into the next d...

This hotel was amazing. It is comfortable and clean, however maintains an authentic Thai feel. The open air main areas add to the ambiance, and somehow they keep these areas cool (rooms are fully air conditioned). The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. They helped us book day trips (cooking class, Elephant and Tiger parks) and arranged for our transportation. While staying there, I had a problem and needed to call my bank in the States. Not only did the front desk staff help me to place the call, they didn't even charge me for it! The spa is also a wonderful addition...very clean and professional. My friend and I both had the Thai massages, and it was by far the best massage I have ever had. They offer heavily discounted spa rates to people staying at the hotel, which was a nice touch. The location is also wonderful...right in the heart of the old city, but certainly close enough to walk out and explore the new city. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and will stay there again if I ever make it back to Chiang Mai!

We stayed for 4 nights. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and helpful in organising transport and a day trip. The central location in the old town area means that it is easy to see many of the local sights on foot.

As can be seen from the photos, the whole hotel and bedrooms are stylishly decorated and furnished, although the low level of lighting on the staircase and some other areas does mean that caution is needed at night – my wife tripped on a couple of occasions on the staircase. There is no lift – our room was on the second floor. Also, our room had no desk/table you could sit at, and only one chair between us. However, these are quite minor drawbacks – we really enjoyed our stay. A plus for us was that there were both a kettle and filter coffee maker in the room. WiFi was free and quite fast compared with other hotels we stayed at.

The breakfast (available from 6.30am) was a mixture of international buffet options, plus hot food to order. We ate in the hotel restaurant most evenings, and the food was excellent, although they ran out of the less expensive white wine options on the wine list. At breakfast and dinner, service was fast and friendly. The upstairs bar, above the restaurant, was largely deserted and while open to the public (as is the restaurant) was a bit half-hearted in terms of drinks and service. There is a delightful, air-conditioned reading room area above reception – we were sorry that we were too busy during our short stay to make use of it.

There are bars, and cheap eating options in the street, opposite the hotel. On Sunday nights the street is closed to traffic from about 5pm and becomes a “walking street” market. Stalls and crowds appear from nowhere and there is a huge variety of goods on sale – this is really worth experiencing, so stay a Sunday night if you can.

If we ever return to Chiang Mai, we would certainly stay here again.

Stayed in U Chiang Mai for 2 nights in January 2013 as part of our 2 weeks trip in Thailand. We chose U Chiang Mai based on the Trip Advisor reviews and we were really not disappointed. We loved everything about this hotel, the location is excellent, just 10minutes drive from the airport, 5 minutes walk from all the temples, shops and very close to the riverside. The hotel is really great, so relaxing and peaceful. The staff is very friendly and gives you a warm welcome when you arrive, giving you the choice of which soap you want for your room and advice on where to go for activities, elephant trekking, bamboo rafting, etc. The rooms are spacious and great, We loved the decoration in the room, the nice sofa on the balcony overlooking the pool and the gardens. We had a great time in Chiang Mai, and particularly in U Chiang Mai. I would definitely recommend this hotel, you won't be disappointed !

Great hotel from the start. We were greeted with fresh juice. The concierge helped us plan a few things during our stay and were very helpful with taxis, tuk tuks, and directions. The pool and entire area was so calming and inviting. Loved it here!
My only complaint was that they had only down comforters, which I am allergic to... So I slept with the oversized towels. Which were quite plush but obviously not ideal... especially for the price, there should have been an alternative blanket.

Just spent a week at the U Chiang Mai and really enjoyed it. The staff are great from the minute you arrive until you depart. They are always friendly and helpful with any request no matter how big or small. The breakfast is really nice with a decent selection of hot items that can be ordered. The location is fantastic and central to everything.
Restaurants near the hotel are all pretty good, but for that something different or slightly better try Colosseo Italian Restaurant just around the corner or Dash Restaurant & Bar.

The U Chiang Mai is one of the nicer hotels in Chiang Mai and is a good choice if you don't mind the price.

The location is excellent, being in the middle of the old town and an easy walk (or bike ride - they have free bikes on hand for guests) to the main temples and a lot of great restaurants. If you stay on Sunday, there is a weekend market held in the evening. Interesting, whilst the street outside is reasonably busy the hotel is built in such a way that the rooms are very quiet.

The rooms have all been recently renovated and are very comfortable. The bed was the most comfortable of our trip in Thailand. The bathroom has all the mod cons and a great rainshower. We had the pleasure of our room opening directly onto the pool.

The breakfast was excellent, with a great buffet (including lots of fresh fruit) and a cooked to order main of eggs and some Thai and Chinese options.

There is a spa on hand, with some very good discounts given to guests. I'd recommend booking early, as it's quite small and if you are keen on a specific slot you may find it has already been booked.

My only reservation about recommending this place wholeheartedly (and why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5), is the price. Whilst it was a very nice hotel, it fell short of being a great hotel. To pick some nits, the grounds were a bit small (which can make the pool area feel a bit claustrophobic) and the staff were professional but didn't go hugely out of their way to help. Overall, I felt they priced themselves a little bit high for what they offered. But in general, a very nice hotel and a good option.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that opens out onto the pool
