“Good quality food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

We dined in the riverside restaurant at River City and not the river cruise ship. The food was very good with a varied selection. We were originally looking for Thai food. However, we were advised the Thai food stopped at 7pm. I think it was something to do with the cook / chief being on the river cruise ship.

“Elvis, The King lives !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

Tired of hustling with tuktuk- and taxi drivers on the way back - who wants to be smoked in petrol fumes after a nice meal – and being there in the rainy season, we crossed the bridge from the Royal Orchid Sheraton and went to ‘La Grande Perle. We had reservations for an outside table, but due to the rain we were seated inside but with Chao Praya view. We had a very nice meal French style - for starters I can surely recommend the ‘Mussels with coriander cream’ and being Belgian, mussels … - and we really enjoyed it. And even for only 4 tables Elvis, The King in his Thai reincarnation, performed as if he was in Vegas. We can only hope that, despite their location on the outside of a second-class shopping mall as River City, ‘La Grande Perle’ can and will survive thanks to the ‘Pearl’, their dinner-cruiser on the Chao Praya river.

“How long can this restaurant still exist?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2009

La Grande Perle is situated in the dying 'shopping centre' River City.
In this once vivid 5 or 6 story building one now finds mainly shops that sell copies of antiquities - on all floors. There are a few general souvenir shops (carpets and other things from abroad) maybe 4 small tailoring agents - there used to be maybe a 20 and the rest of the shop units is vacant.
Nobody in his right mind would take a trip to this River City (although it advertises "Thailand in a day". It is not worth it unless you go after the copied antiquities.
The nearby Royal Orchid Sheraton is renovating. The connecting bridge from the hotel to the River City centre is in disrepair and may be closed. It is a sort of no man's land anyhow and very few tourists wander across. Few of the present day tourists from Sheraton would be willing to spend the money for this restaurant or would even feel suited to go there.
It is unusual fro guests from the Hilton on the other side of the river to come over.

This said it becomes clear that La Grande Perle can not attract sufficient patrons these days.
It must bedificult and costly to stock food and keep it fresh.
The quality of the food is average and bland. Some dishes are a failure because the wrong ingredients have been used. The restaurant seems not to have butter available which makes a sauce hollandaise unpalatable. (you don't like to tatse the palm oil) Burnt-butter sause is of course also better avoided. In general the food is just OK but certainly not worth a trip. The restaurant is quite big and richly decorated and it gives a nice view on the river and the river pier from where sometimes crowds of passengers emerge next to your window. It is quiet but it has peculiar background music plus even a big television screen where mostly Thai and other boxing is shown. This is nice for the waiters and for the guests who do not find their food interesting enough. The service can be pleasant. Some of the chairs are to big to be comfortable: it takes 2 small Thai girls to move them.
There are plenty cheaper restaurants in Bangkok at better locations.

“Excellent dining experience, refined but casual ambiance'...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2009

Have returned to this restaurant everytime I have visited Bangkok this past year and it continues to please.
Excellent French trained chef (Oliver) who presents nearly flawless and pleasing offerings from a somewhat extensive menu. Page after page from starters to dessert sometimes can be dangerous territory in having to much but this place does a fine job.

Good location yet slightly overwelming when the dinner boats pull alongside the restaurant and hords of tourist are disembarking or boarding, but no big deal really.
The feel is quite nice yet casual and relaxed. Staff is always there but never overwelming and know their stuff.
Meet the owner who is truely unique and will beg you to sing on stage.

Good place. Good food. One of BKK's best...
