We stayed at Rambuttri Village Plaza for two nights, between visits to Chiang Mai and the southern gulf islands. This hotel is quite reasonably priced for a better-than-basic aircon room, but I will confess we looked elsewhere for our next stop in Bangkok. In the end, we decided that it was good enough for one more night.
The location - on Soi Rambuttri, across the road from Chaos San Road, is great. There is a 7-11 right downstairs, as well as a coffee shop and numerous other restaurants. The night markets are pleasant and much calmer than in KSR. The very popular rooftop pool was a definite drawcard for us - this was the least expensive hotel-with-pool we could find online for the area. Taxis from Suvarnabhumi and then from there to Don Muang cost us 400THB each (there are also shuttle buses to both airports from the Banglamphu/KSR area, which are cheaper).
Our room was fairly basic, but had good, not-loud air con, a decent shower, an old-style cable TV, 2 bedside lamps (rare but welcome touch), and empty space where a fridge once lived, and a view into what looked like monks' quarters. The blockout curtains were a bonus for sleep-ins, heat-suppression, and privacy. We found the free wifi (other places in the area charge) painfully slow on our laptop, but OK on the iPhone. Not sure why this is, but not as convenient as we would have liked.
We (as is everyone) were charged (and given a receipt for) $1000 THB deposit, which was returned to us with no problems at the end of our stay. We've experienced this elsewhere around the area - quite possibly in response to out-of-control partiers in the past - and we have no problem with this. It's no different to credit-card imprints in other hotels, and possibly safer. We were rather surprised, however, when we were told "Sorry, you cannot have another pillow" (we like to have two each to sit up & read/watch TV in bed). The staff offered to swap our pillows for different ones, but no way were we getting any more than our alotted two. Was this also in reaction to bad-apple, pillow-thieving past guests? Not a major thing, but a few marks lost for customer service here. Staff in general were polite, and not unfriendly (the cleaning lady on our floor was very pleasant), but we found this policy and attitude unusual.
Plusses: location, price, pool
Minuses: wifi, spirit of customer service
All that said, we still intend to stay one more night before leaving Thailand.
